ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
After that, nothing particularly happened, and we just bought the eggs and headed straight home. But then Reona seemed to have thought of something and spoke to Mio.
“Hey, do you mind if I make the omelette rice today?”
“Huh? Reona-san, you’re going to make it for us?”
“Yeah, Ryouya-kun seems to be doubting my skills, so I thought I’d show him what I can do.”
“In that case, I’ll leave it to you, Reona-san. You can use whatever utensils you like in the kitchen.”
“I’ll be in my room then, good luck.”
I left those words behind and tried to head back to my room, but Reona grabbed onto the sleeve of my uniform and stopped me.
“Ah, you’re helping too, Ryouya-kun. I usually cook with Riona, so doing it alone feels awkward.”
“I’m really terrible at cooking, so I doubt I can take Riona’s place.”
Back in elementary and middle school, I failed so many times in cooking class that I usually ended up being put in charge of washing dishes.
That’s why in our household chore division, Mio handles the cooking.
“That’s fine, Riona is pretty hopeless at cooking too.”
“Really? That’s hard to believe.”
“It’s kind of dangerous to let her hold a knife or use fire…”
Reona spoke with a distant look in her eyes, as if she had given up on training Riona.
Ah, she’s serious.
I had always imagined Riona as someone who’d handle things like that effortlessly, so it was honestly surprising to hear this side of her.
“So, I’ll do the basic cooking. You just need to support me, Ryouya-kun.”
“Got it. Just tell me what to do.”
“Then could you get the rice ready for now? I’ll start with the consommé soup.”
“Okay.”
I opened the bag of rice in the kitchen and measured it out with a measuring cup. Then I rinsed it using a bowl and strainer, put it in the rice cooker, and pressed the button.
Even someone as bad at cooking as me could handle at least this much. Beside me, Reona—wearing an apron—was deftly slicing potatoes, onions, and cabbage with practiced hands and starting to simmer them in a pot.
“You really look the part.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, you seriously seem like you’d make a great wife.”
When I said exactly what I was thinking straight out, Reona started grinning.
“Does that mean you want me to be your wife?”
“No, no, I didn’t say that at all. You’re seriously reading way too much into it.”
“Can’t believe the day has finally come when Ryouya-kun tries to flirt with me.”
She started saying ridiculous things, and I tried to clear up the misunderstanding, but Reona wasn’t listening. I had no idea how she’d interpreted my words in a way that led to that conclusion.
Well, understanding the way Reona and Riona think is probably impossible in the first place.
After that, we continued cooking together, and eventually, dinner was ready.
“It makes me happy thinking this was made through teamwork between me and Ryouya-kun.”
“I don’t think I was helpful enough for it to be called teamwork, but yeah, I do feel a sense of accomplishment.”
In front of us was beautifully plated omelette rice, consommé soup, and a side salad. It really felt like a job well done.
“Could you go get Riona and Mio-chan?”
“Got it, I’ll go.”
“Thanks, I’ll set the table while you do.”
For now, I headed to Mio’s room. When I knocked and entered, she was at her desk working on her assignments.
“Dinner’s ready.”
“Oh, it’s already that late?”
“I’m going to wake up Riona, so you go on ahead.”
“Okay, thanks.”
Leaving Mio’s room, I entered my own room. I knocked, but there was no response. It seemed like she was still asleep.
“Riona, wake up.”
I called out to Riona, who was fast asleep in my bed, but she didn’t move a muscle.
This time I tried shaking her lightly, but even then, she still showed no signs of waking up. If it were Dad, he’d probably smack me awake, but I couldn’t bring myself to do something that rough to Riona.
Feeling stuck in a predicament, I pulled out my phone to look up ways to gently wake a girl. The first result that popped up on the search page said something ridiculous about how a kiss would wake her up. Needless to say, I wasn’t about to do something that bold.
“…Seriously, she’s completely defenseless. This is still a guy’s room, you know.”
If I had bad intentions, she’d be totally vulnerable to all sorts of unspeakable acts. Did she realize that? Well, I’d never do anything that would socially destroy me anyway.
Even after continuing to call out to her and gently shaking her, Riona still didn’t show any signs of waking.
“She’s seriously not waking up. Should I actually try the kiss thing just to see if it works…?”
“I think that’s a great idea.”
“No, it’s not! Wait?! why are you even here!?”
I shouted in surprise when I noticed Reona standing behind me without me realizing.
“Since you and Riona were taking forever, I came to check on you.”
“You scared the hell out of me! If you’re here, can you help me wake her up too?”
“Wouldn’t it be more romantic to wake her with a prince’s kiss instead?”
“I already said doing that kind of thing is definitely not okay!”
“It’s fine. I’m sure Riona wouldn’t mind.”
Saying that, Reona wrapped her arm around my waist and tried to push me down onto the bed. Of course, I resisted, but she blew softly into my ear, and my strength instantly drained from my body.
Naturally, there was no way Reona would let that opening go, and I ended up getting pushed down onto the bed, practically on top of Riona. At that very moment, Riona’s eyes suddenly opened wide.
“…Ryouya, were you maybe trying to attack me in my sleep?”
“N-no, I wasn’t!”
She finally woke up, but the timing couldn’t have been worse.
And seriously, what’s with that slightly disappointed look on her face?
