Chapter 63: Was There Anything in Our Conversation Just Now That Showed That?

For the time being, the two of us left the house and started walking toward the supermarket while chatting. Since most schools had finished summer break yesterday, all the students heading home wore gloomy expressions on their faces. Well, I probably had the same look on my face too.

“How was the placement test today, by the way?”

“It went a lot better than I expected.”

Last year’s summer homework had been a rushed, last-minute job on the final day, so I didn’t remember a single thing about it. Because of that, my last year’s placement test had been a total disaster. But this year, thanks to Riona patiently helping me with the parts I didn’t understand, I managed to do way better compared to last time.

“That’s obviously thanks to us, right?”

“Yeah, thanks to Riona.”

“…Hey, what about me?”

When I emphasized Riona in response to Reona emphasizing “us,” she protested with a displeased look. But Reona had also tried to slack off like I had, only to get pushed by Riona to do better. Thinking that, I tried to smooth things over.

“You really helped me out with the English composition assignment, Reona.”

“Now that just sounds like you’re saying it because I forced you to, and now I feel guilty.”

“Sorry… I guess.”

Honestly, even if I hadn’t said anything, I was certain she would’ve found something to complain about anyway. So no matter what I chose, I doubted there was a “right” answer. As I thought that, Reona started laughing.

“You don’t have to apologize, you know. We’re close enough for that kind of banter, right, Ryouya-kun?”

“It’s just… Apologizing on the spot is kind of a reflex to me.”

That was how I tried to excuse myself, but Reona kept smiling as usual. She was probably amused by how flustered I looked.

“But I’m really happy, you know? I can tell you’ve opened up to us way more than before.”

“Was there anything in our conversation just now that showed that?”

“Well, you teased me about the homework, right? I think you’d only do that kind of thing if you felt comfortable with someone.”

Now that she mentions it, that’s true. 

I’d never tease a classmate I wasn’t close to like that. Besides family, the only people I could joke around with that way were Reona and Riona.

“I guess I’ve been corrupted by Reona and Riona.”

“You’re still as bad at being honest as ever, huh, Ryouya-kun?”

“That’s just the kind of person I am.”

“I know.”

As we bantered like that, we arrived at our destination—the supermarket. Since I’d been leaving most of the shopping to Mio lately, I couldn’t quite remember where everything was.

“Sorry, I’m going to the restroom real quick. Can you wait a bit?”

“Yeah, no rush.”

“Thanks.”

Saying that, Reona headed into the restroom right next to the entrance. While she was gone, I thought I’d figure out my party setup in a mobile game, so I reached into my pocket for my phone—only to be called out by someone.

“Huh? If it isn’t Yagami?”

“…Matsuyama-san. It’s been a while.”

The person who spoke to me was Sayaka Matsuyama—my childhood friend and also my first love. I wondered why she was here, but then remembered she lived in the neighborhood, so it wasn’t surprising at all to meet her here.

“It’s really been a long time, huh? We haven’t seen each other since middle school graduation.”

“Yeah, different high schools make it hard to run into each other.”

I had gone to Amagi High, an academic prep school, while Matsuyama-san had chosen a business-track high school. Since our school routes and schedules were totally different, it made sense that we hadn’t crossed paths. By the way, we used to call each other by our first names when we were kids, but after starting middle school, we switched to using last names.

And before I knew it, she had a boyfriend, and my first love ended without anything happening. Since I had those bitter memories about her, I didn’t really want to hang out with Matsuyama-san too much. But she didn’t seem to care and just kept chatting like normal.

“How have you been lately, Yagami?”

“Eh, you know, just the usual.”

“I see. I just broke up with my boyfriend, so I’ve been feeling kind of down.”

“Boyfriend… You mean the one from the second year of middle school?”

“Nope, Kousuke was like, three boyfriends ago.”

Wait, so Matsuyama-san had dated three guys so far? Compared to me, who’d never even had a girlfriend, she was way more experienced. Needless to say, I felt pretty complicated about it. Hearing that my first love had three ex-boyfriends definitely left a mark I couldn’t quite explain in my heart. 

Just as I was stewing in that thought, Reona came back from the restroom.

“Sorry to keep you waiting, Ryouya-kun. So… Who’s this girl?”

“Oh, I think I might’ve mentioned her before. She’s a childhood friend of mine…”

Reona had already looked a bit cautious to begin with, but the moment she heard the words “childhood friend,” her expression got even more intense.

Ah. Yeah. This is definitely going to be a pain.

Chapter 64: We’re Totally in Love With Each Other, We Even Take Baths and Sleep Together

“Hey, Yagami. Who’s that ridiculously gorgeous girl over there?”

“This girl is…”

“I’m Ryouya-kun’s girlfriend.”

Before I could explain, Reona answered while linking her arm with mine. 

No, no, don’t just casually spout an outrageous lie like that.

“What? You’re Yagami’s girlfriend? Really!?”

“Well, Reona isn’t exactly…”

“Yes. We’re totally in love with each other. We even take baths and sleep together.”

I tried to clear up the misunderstanding, but Reona shamelessly poured fuel on the fire. And the worst part was, what she said wasn’t entirely a lie, so it was hard for me to deny that part.

“I find it hard to believe that Yagami, who’s been a loner since middle school, managed to get such a beautiful girlfriend like you.”

“That’s why I’m saying—”

“Well, I mean, Ryouya-kun has continued being a loner even after entering high school, and he’s super pessimistic and totally twisted at heart, so I kind of get where you’re coming from.”

She had been somewhat on my side until just now, but suddenly did a full 180 and launched a devastating friendly fire attack. I wanted to accuse her of the crime of exposing inconvenient truths… Ignoring my wounded pride, Reona kept on talking.

“But I noticed the charm in Ryouya-kun that nobody else saw, so I reluctantly made the special exception of becoming his girlfriend.”

“Hey, why are you acting all high and mighty all of a sudden?”

“Because we’re talking about you, Ryouya-kun.”

As Reona and I went back and forth like that, Matsuyama-san smiled and chimed in.

“Wow. I didn’t think you two matched at all in terms of looks, but surprisingly, you kinda suit each other.”

“No way. What on earth made you think that?”

“Well, I am your childhood friend after all, so I know how you used to be. I’ve never seen you so relaxed around someone else before. And your girlfriend looks like she’s genuinely having fun talking with you.”

Her words caught both me and Reona completely off guard. I honestly didn’t think Reona and I looked like a good match at all, but Matsuyama-san didn’t seem like she was lying either.

“Since you’ve leveled up from loner to having a girlfriend, Yagami, you better work hard not to get dumped. Anyway, I’m heading out first then.”

Matsuyama-san said what she wanted, then left us both standing there frozen in place.

“…Crap, I totally forgot to tell Matsuyama-san to keep that part a secret!?”

Knowing how chatty she was, she would absolutely go around blabbing that I had a girlfriend like she was a walking loudspeaker. I might’ve been a loner, but I wasn’t exactly invisible. If someone mentioned the name “Yagami,” our old middle school classmates would easily realize it was me. At this point, it was way too late to chase after her, so I had no choice but to accept it. Still, this was seriously going to be a pain in the ass.

“I was a little on guard since she’s your childhood friend, but she actually seemed like a really nice person.”

“Yeah, I agree that Matsuyama-san is a good person.”

I had no idea what exactly Reona had been worried about, but Matsuyama-san had always been kind, considerate, and had a good personality. Hence why I fell for her in the first place.

“By the way, it seemed pretty obvious she doesn’t see you as a guy, so even if you had confessed back then, I think she would’ve turned you down.”

“…Hey, don’t just casually dig up old wounds with that cheerful smile on your face.”

“I just figured it was kind of sad for you to keep clinging to your first love forever, so I thought I’d help you face reality.”

Reona stuck her tongue out with a playful expression. She looked so adorable in that moment that I completely lost the will to complain. Not that I’d ever admit that out loud.
