- Chap 16 - Locked in a Heated Debate: Seeking Revenge Against Amaterasu - Heroes
Far away from the battlefield where Amaterasu had fought, two men were locked in a heated argument inside a secure room, the only place safe from the relentless invaders.
“Mars, are you absolutely certain that girl who just battled out there is the legendary Amaterasu?” A soldier asked, his voice trembling with a mixture of fear and anticipation.
Mars fixed him with a cold, steely gaze. “Of course, I’m sure. Her intensity and utter lack of empathy are unmistakable. That’s why I instructed the young master to use the mana imbalance device.”
As a member of the tertiary soldiers hired to defend the castle, Mars knew that he was expendable, but the chance to defeat Amaterasu, even the slightest possibility, was worth the risk. The air was thick with tension as they awaited the outcome of their risky plan, their fate hanging in the balance.
Kuro’s voice dripped with impatience and irritation as she muttered to herself, “When will I lay eyes on my young master Adam again? I cannot endure this insolent child putting on airs any longer.”
Kuro, a strikingly beautiful Garo girl, exuded an aura of quiet strength and power. Her luscious black hair, cut short to frame her delicate features, was the envy of all who saw it. Her eyes, a piercing yellow that seemed to glow in the darkness, only added to her mesmerizing allure.
Despite her obvious beauty, Kuro had little regard for Master Pedro and cared only for the safety and well-being of her beloved Adam. As the strongest warrior in the castle, she had earned the right to do as she pleased, and nothing would stop her from reuniting with her master.
Kuro’s heart raced as she caught a whiff of a familiar scent. Her nose twitched as she scanned the castle. “Master Adam, you are here,” she breathed, her voice quivering with excitement. With a quick nod, she disappeared from the room, leaving the two arguing men behind.
Gustavo’s eyes followed Kuro’s retreating form before turning back to Mars, a sly smile playing at his lips. “She was never loyal to him, just as we aren’t,” he taunted. “You seek revenge, and I seek my money.” Mars clenched his jaw, his eyes flicking to his frozen arm that he couldn’t help but stare at.
Gustavo leaned in, his voice low and menacing. “Tell me, who froze your arm?” he demanded, already knowing the answer.
Mars’ expression darkened, his lips thinning into a grim line. “That cursed witch, Amaterasu,” he spat, the name leaving a bitter taste in his mouth.
Gustavo nervously fidgeted with his hands, trying to distract himself from the weight of the tense silence that hung in the air. “Do you think the little Kuro will come back?” he asked, his voice low and hushed.
Mars, his eyes fixed on his frozen arm, didn’t immediately respond. After a moment, he finally spoke: “No, she goes after whoever it is.”
Gustavo couldn’t help but feel a shiver run down his spine as he remembered the rumors he had heard about the infamous Amaterasu. “I’ve always heard about the day Amaterasu froze her kingdom for revenge…” he trailed off, hoping to spark a conversation.
Mars turned his head slowly to face Gustavo, his expression cold and serious. “That wasn’t revenge,” he said, his voice laced with a hint of fear. “I’ve seen people fight looking for revenge, and she’s not one of those people.” “All I saw was a psychopath.” The word hung in the air like a dark cloud, casting a sense of terror over the two men in the room.
Gustavo’s heart skipped a beat as he watched Mars’ expression darken. The room suddenly felt colder, as if the name Amaterasu had summoned a chilling presence. He could feel the weight of fear in the air as Mars’ frozen arm seemed to pulse with a life of its own.
“Do you really think she’s a psychopath?” Gustavo asked hesitantly, trying to gauge Mars’ reaction.
Mars didn’t answer right away, his eyes still fixed on his frozen limb. “You don’t understand,” he finally said, his voice low and ominous. “She’s not like any other fighter I’ve ever seen.” She’s ruthless, merciless… and she enjoys it. “The way she froze my arm… it was like she was reveling in my pain.”
Gustavo looked at Mars with concern. “But it’s not worth risking your life for revenge; she’s too powerful. You saw what she did to your arm; imagine what she could do to your whole body.”
Mars gritted his teeth and said, “I don’t care. She has to pay for what she did to me and to my family. And I won’t rest until I see her suffer.”
Gustavo shook his head. “You’re obsessed, Mars. “It’s not healthy.”
Mars’s eyes darkened. “You don’t understand. You weren’t there when she killed everyone I loved. You weren’t there when she froze my entire kingdom. You weren’t there when she laughed while doing it.”
Gustavo’s voice was laced with doubt as he posed the question to Mars, his eyes scrutinizing his every move. “Do you honestly believe you stand a chance against her, with her mana in complete disarray and unusable?” he asked, his tone dripping with skepticism.
Mars swallowed hard, his fear of Amaterasu palpable. “It’s doubtful,” he admitted, his voice quivering slightly. “But even a small chance is better than none.”
The ominous-sounding “Mana Nullifier” device would emit waves of energy that disrupted the very fabric of magic, rendering the mana of anyone within its radius utterly useless. With this device in play, the outcome of the battle would no longer be determined by skill or strategy but by sheer brute force alone.
However, even with this device on their side, Mars and his team were still at a severe disadvantage. Amaterasu’s own innate abilities and training far surpassed his own, and her relentless pursuit of victory was like nothing he had ever faced before. The air was thick with tension as he prepared for what was sure to be the fight of his life.
“Mars, your time to fight has come.” The sound of Pedro’s voice echoed through Mars’s mind, sending shivers down his spine. The time for battle had arrived, and Mars knew that this was the moment he had been training for his entire life. The weight of responsibility bore down on him like a heavy burden, and he could feel his heart pounding in his chest.
