Chapter 48 Second batch of strawberry jam
Thursday.
Once again, I went to the riverside and collected wild strawberries with Minya and Lania.
“Strawberry, strawberry, strawberry. Eating strawberry jam is so delicious ♪”
It seems like Minya is singing a song about how it’s tasty to spread strawberry jam on bread.
She’s in a good mood today too.
“Mmm, it’s still sweet and delicious.”
She occasionally sneaks a taste.
It’s not a big deal since it’s not going to run out. It might reduce the amount of jam a little, but it’s an investment in ourselves in terms of money.
We’re not that desperate, so it’s fine.
Besides, it’s cute to see her with that satisfied expression. Priceless.
Finding wild strawberry bushes in the riverside area is a bit of a hassle, but I can’t think of any specific improvement ideas.
It can’t be helped.
“Hey, Ed, I found a tree branch!”
“Yeah.”
Sometimes they call out to me.
Since we’re at the riverside, there are fallen tree branches that seem suitable for processing, carried downstream from upstream. In this way, they call out to me and I collect them.
I pick up enough tree branches so that the item box doesn’t get too full.
Among them, there are some that appear to be remnants of the village, turned into planks. Since planks can be useful for other purposes, I gratefully collect them.
“All right, we’ve collected plenty. Shall we head back?”
“Yes.”
“Yes, let’s go.”
I hear Miinya and Lania’s voices from a short distance away.
The three of us return home together.
As usual, we have our lunch with wild plants in between.
“Let’s begin.”
Swallowing sound
“Yes, um…”
Minya made a sound with her throat without saying anything.
I wonder if Lania will help me. She responds to me.
I put the strawberries into the pot and start simmering them.
It was the jam-making process for the strawberries we picked in the morning.
“It smells amazing!”
“It’s a lovely scent.”
The aroma of strawberries is simply irresistible.
That fragrance fills the entire house.
Melun-san and Gid-san are also here, happily sniffing the scent.
And then there’s Eggbird.
Seemingly more restless than usual, it keeps turning its head around in circles.
And so, we were making jam at home like this.
When we finished, it was evening.
Several children came over.
“Excuse me, Minya’s mother.”
“Oh dear, what’s the matter?”
Melun-san speaks kindly, but there’s a wry smile on her face, knowing the situation.
“Hey, do you smell something sweet?”
“It must be your imagination.”
“I see. That’s why I got hurt.”
“What was it again, the war to protect Minya and Lania?”
“Yeah, Ed. We call it Ed’s Poop War.”
“Oh, really?”
So it was such a strange name.
It makes it seem like I’m the mastermind behind it all.
The sweet smell must be from the strawberry jam. I’ll just brush it off.
Looking at the child, there does seem to be a slight bruise on their arm, possibly from being hit by a tree branch.
“Divine Healing – Sacrament Heal!”
Oh, it’s that sacred magic.
The bruise quickly diminishes and heals completely.
“Thank you so much. I’m sorry I can’t thank you properly.”
“It’s okay. Just be a little more careful, alright?”
“Yes.”
As the others also get healed and leave, the house becomes more spacious.
The ongoing conflict between the North and East factions continues in the slums of Lanierda.
It seems they engage in swordplay every day, and ironically, everyone is gradually getting better, resembling a practical swordsmanship training.
While the adults keep an eye on them, there are a few former adventurers among them who sometimes offer guidance for some reason.
What on earth are they doing?
Occasionally, there are injuries, and as you can see, they rely on our Melun-san for care.
For minor injuries, Melun-san provides free treatment. It may reduce our income, but the slums can’t sustain themselves without supporting each other. It’s considered a form of social contribution.
In the evening, we head to the Dridon General Store to deliver the strawberry jam.
“Dridon-san.”
“Oh, Ed. Is it time for the strawberry jam?”
“Hehe, yes.”
“6,000 Darrils, and you’ll get 5,000 Darrils in hand, alright?”
“Of course.”
We firmly shake hands.
Dridon-san gazes at each jar, carefully examining the red contents packed inside.
The quantity is the same as last time, around 20 jars in total.
When we focus on gathering wild strawberries, we can actually gather quite a lot.
I can’t help but smile widely.
“Oh, Ed, you seem even grimmer today.”
“Well, Dridon-san, you’ve got that dark smirk, don’t you?”
“How rude. I always have my business smile on, ahaha.”
If this sells well, we’ll make a considerable profit.
Lately, the market conditions have been favorable, so there’s a good chance it will sell. It almost feels like the gold coins are guaranteed.
“Hehehe.”
“Ahahaha.”
We laugh together.
It might seem a bit scary to others.
“Ed, you’re a little scary.”
Minya said it, see?
“Hehehe.”
Lania smiled gently.
Perhaps she laughed not at the gold coins but at my face.
It wasn’t a dark smirk.
Her smile has a certain angelic cuteness to it.
“Yeah.”
I see her smile and feel a bit embarrassed, so I respond bluntly.
Damn it, she’s cute.
I scratch my cheek.
She’s still looking at me with those adorable wide eyes, and I feel defenseless against her.
“Unya.”
Minya also laughs, giving off an impression of an innocent confusion.
Well, she’s cute too, so anything goes.
