Chapter 47 River Seaweed and Dice Steak
Wednesday.
After all the hustle and bustle, Tuesday turned out to be a complete day off. Today, I wake up refreshed.
“Good morning, Minya.”
“Munyaah, Edoo, good morning. I love you.”
As always, Minya is being affectionate, but it’s adorable in its own way.
“How are you feeling, Ed?”
“Oh, I’m feeling great today.”
“That’s wonderful.”
Minnya greets me with a smile.
Truly, what a cute little creature. It’s irresistible.
I have my usual breakfast, consisting of wild herbs and a small portion of dried meat. The staple food is still Ilk beans.
I’ve never really thought of Ilk beans as delicious, but they’re not exactly unpleasant either. It’s just that I’ve grown tired of eating them. If I were to give an absolute evaluation, I’d say they’re slightly tasty at best.
Japanese rice, which was a staple in my previous life, was delicious, but I can’t quite grasp the difference here. Perhaps it’s a matter of personal preference.
Melun and Gid seem relatively content with a bean-based diet alone. Maybe this is normal in this world. But then again, Dridon old man said something like “Just beans?” Maybe Minya’s parents are the ones who are different.
If someone were to say bread is their staple food, it would still feel a bit odd to me.
I still have a few gold coins to spare. If there’s something I want, I can buy it. And if the ingredients aren’t too expensive, come to think of it, I can buy them too. I had a feeling that I had to gather them myself, but that’s right, I can just buy them.
In fact, I’ve already bought olive oil and wheat flour.
“Alright, Minya. Let’s go to the river today.”
“Huh? Oh, yeah.”
Even though I said we could buy things, I head out to gather ingredients before my words have even settled. That’s just how I am. If something can be collected, I’ll collect it.
As I step outside, the kids are already making a racket from early morning. The infamous “Ed’s poop” incident hasn’t come to an end yet.
I observe from a distance as the kids from the northern district and the eastern district engage in a skirmish, wielding tree branches like swords. We managed to prevent an all-out war last time through mediation, but it seems that small scuffles between a few individuals are still ongoing.
Do your best to avoid injuries. They continue to fight without a care for us, the ones involved in the incident.
I bring along Lania and head towards the river.
“Now, today, we’ll enter the water a bit, and you see those green grass-like things growing on the rocks, right?”
“Yeah.”
“Yes.”
Both of them give good responses.
“So, we’ll pick them with our hands and put them in the jar. This is seaweed. River seaweed.”
“I see.”
“So, we can eat this too?”
“Yes.”
【Kawanori: Plant, Edible】
The river’s flow is relatively calm, and the water has high transparency, causing seaweed to grow densely on the riverbed stones. Especially in this shallow area, it’s a perfect spot for gathering, with an abundance of seaweed.
“Hup, hup!”
The water is slightly chilly, but with the warm weather, it feels pleasant. I continue to gather seaweed and put it into the jar.
Both of them imitate my actions, trying their best to do the same. It’s a good thing they’re here; I would have easily grown tired if I were alone.
“Wanna try a bit?”
“Can we eat it raw?”
“Uh, well, I think it should be fine.”
“Yeah.”
I take a bite of the seaweed, just a small taste.
“Oh wow, what is this? It has such a delightful flavor.”
“That’s it, that’s the flavor of seaweed. It’s quite tasty, right?”
“Yeah.”
And so, we continue gathering seaweed as we walk.
Well, we’ve collected a decent amount. Let’s quickly return home before those nosy kids outside notice us.
Why do we have to be so secretive about this?
Once inside, I take out a wooden board that I had secretly obtained from the forest, splitting it into pieces.
“This is how we make sheet nori by arranging them like this.”
“Wow, that’s interesting!”
“Right?”
I can’t resist making sheet nori either. And half of it will remain in the jar, to be used as raw seaweed.
While it could be stored in the item box, raw seaweed doesn’t last very long.
After enjoying a casual lunch break, we spend our time as we please.
Whenever I have free time, I practice swordsmanship or craft spoons. There’s never a dull moment; I always have work to do.
So busy, but in a good way.
And thus, the evening arrives as we go about our day.
It’s time to prepare tonight’s dinner.
“First, let’s have some seaweed soup.”
“Hmm.”
I prepare a vegetable soup as usual, adding a touch of dried meat for flavor, and let it simmer for a while. Then, I add the seaweed.
“Wow, it turned green! It’s green now.”
The originally dark green seaweed quickly changes to a light, vibrant green.
“That’s right, that’s the unique and interesting aspect of seaweed.”
“Yeah, I see.”
Now, I remove the pot from the heat and set it aside.
“For tonight’s dinner, let’s have diced steak.”
“Oh, steak?”
“Well, Mina, have you ever eaten a whole piece of meat cooked like this?”
“Never!”
“That’s right, I thought so.”
I bring out a large piece of meat from a wild boar, commonly known as a wild boar steak.
“The meat piece is huge!”
“Yeah, I managed to get a good cut of meat.”
Using my mithril knife, I start cutting the meat. Since it would be cumbersome to cut it into individual portions during the meal, I decide to dice the steak in advance. Now it’s bite-sized pieces.
“We’re going to cook these.”
“Wow.”
I place the meat in a frying pan and sprinkle it with salt and sansho pepper, then start cooking.
Sizzle…
“Mmm…” (Gulping sound)
As usual, Minya’s mouth is watering, almost drooling. Lania, too, has a look that suggests she’s eager to taste it.
I continue cooking the meat.
“I’ll make sure all sides are evenly cooked, avoiding any raw parts. I’ll let the heat penetrate properly but be careful not to overcook.”
I turn up the heat on the magic stove and cook the steak until it’s just before it becomes crispy on the surface, ensuring the inside remains juicy. Once I determine that it has reached the perfect juicy state, I remove it from the heat.
“It’s ready.”
“Thanks to Raffalier-sama, let’s dig in.”
With Lania present, we offer our gratitude to the gods before beginning our meal.
“Wow, the steak is delicious. The meat is so flavorful!”
“Indeed, this is the true taste of meat.”
Thinly sliced meat is tasty, but the diced steak has an incomparable satisfaction due to its thickness. It truly feels like indulging in a meaty feast, and the inside remains tender, juicy, and incredibly delicious.
“Oh, the aroma of this soup with seaweed is amazing! I love it.”
“Yes, I also find this scent delightful.”
Both the wild boar steak and seaweed soup receive high praise.
The sheet of seaweed is finally complete. However, when it comes to seaweed, soy sauce would be a great addition. But we make do with what we have. I store the sheet of seaweed in a corner as a preserved food item.
