Chapter 49 “Ed’s Poop Week War”
And the days passed, reaching the next Tuesday.
“They went that way!”
“Chase them, chase them!”
“Yaaaah!”
“What the heck!”
“Take that!”
“Oh no, I’ve been hit!”
After the morning preparations, the voices of children echo through Lanierda.
“Don’t go alone. Stick together in pairs or more.”
“Yeah, got it!”
It was a Tuesday, one week ago. The day when I had a stomachache and Minya coined the term “Ed’s Poop” outside.
Since then, a week had passed, and now in various parts of Lanierda, intense clashes erupted as the kids engaged in their sword-fighting games.
We were attacked right from the start of the day, with scattered battles breaking out in the eastern district.
After a while, the area around us grew quiet.
“Let’s meet up with Lania now.”
“Okay.”
Both Minya and I were dressed as adventurers. Wearing our clothes, equipped with chest armor, and carrying weapons.
“Be careful out there.”
“We will.”
As usual, we received a warning from Melun-san and left the house.
There were no children’s voices. It was strangely quiet, even more so than usual, giving an eerie feeling.
Though there were faint sounds, they seemed distant, as if something was happening in the distance.
We hurriedly made our way to Lania’s house.
“Lania, are you here? Are you okay?”
“Yes, Ed-kun, I’m fine.”
Lania immediately came out of her house. She was wearing a blue and white dress, equipped with chest armor and a black magic staff. She was fully geared up.
We headed towards the northern district.
On the way, we caught a wounded child who had returned and listened to the child’s situation.
“Oh, Ed. We were attacked at the eastern district since morning, but we managed to push them back. However, when we counterattacked and invaded the northern district, they put up a strong fight too. Now everyone is regrouping at the midpoint. It could be dangerous if everyone clashes there.”
“I see. Thanks for the information.”
The injured child seemed to have a minor injury on his left arm but nothing serious. and was holding a wooden stick in on his right hand.
They would probably go back and seek Melun-san’s help.
Both Miinya and I can actually use healing magic, but well, let’s keep it to ourselves.
There aren’t many healers in this world. While not rare, they are definitely a minority, I think.
It’s convenient and highly valued.
We arrived at the central buffer zone.
Just like before, on the other side were the forces from the northern district, and on our side were the forces from the eastern district, glaring at each other.
“Ohhhhhh!”
“Uuuuuuh!”
They were breathing heavily and their excitement levels were higher than before.
It was a dangerous sign.
When group mentality takes over in combat, even children can become uncontrollable.
After a week of serious fighting, they had become much stronger than before.
There was a possibility of getting injured, and worst-case scenario, even the risk of death.
Many of them had upgraded their wooden sticks from mere branches to something resembling wooden swords.
I remember Dridon-san mentioning something about it.
“Don’t underestimate wooden swords. They have the potential to cause harm.”
Cold sweat trickled down my neck.
The tension in the air was palpable.
And here we were, right in the midst of it, so our excitement levels were reaching their peak.
“Ed, Mīnya, Lania!”
One of the children on the other side called out our names.
“Today is the day we settle this. Everyone, let’s go!”
“Whoooooaaaahhh!”
The enemy children raised their wooden swords and charged at us in unison.
“Stop!”
Despite Lania’s desperate cry, they ignored it and continued their advance.
“Uoooooh!”
“Teiyaaah!”
“Uryaaaah!”
The battle had begun.
It seemed like a daunting task to bring this situation under control without any casualties.
As much as we could launch attacks, we were unable to silence people with magic or anything of the sort.
“Stooooop! I said, ‘I’ll blast you with a fireball,’ right?! Don’t you dare say you forgot!”
Lania is completely furious.
It’s a bit scary.
Correction. Despite her usually quiet demeanor, she’s incredibly terrifying.
“Gather before my hand, flames of crimson blaze—Fireball!”
A fireball appears right in front of Lania.
And it keeps growing.
Wait, it’s getting really big.
Wait, it’s massive! Everyone might end up dead from this.
“Everyone, stop! Uwaaaaahhh!”
The sound of roaring flames fills the air.
I don’t know what’s burning, but the heat is intense, making my face feel hot.
The fireball doesn’t hit the enemy camp… Thankfully, it soars through the sky.
The colossal fireball explodes and scatters in mid-air.
Heat rays rain down upon us from the fiery sphere.
“Auchichi.”
“It’s hot.”
Everyone felt the heat.
In unison, we halted the battle and gazed at the colossal fireball, losing our will to fight.
“Oh…”
I too was left speechless.
A child’s legs gave way.
Another stood frozen, their face turning pale.
And there was a child whose pants were damp from a small accident.
In unison, we abandoned the fight and fell into silence.
“That was intense.”
“Yeah… I thought I was going to die.”
“So, Lania-chan really did cast a fireball.”
“It’s scary.”
And so, the battle came to an end.
It all started as playful teasing over a love affair.
Seems like that romance was blown away somewhere.
The leader of the opposing side, the ‘third child,’ had a refreshed expression, as if a burden had been lifted from them.
“It’s our defeat. We won’t go to the eastern district. It’s Lania’s solo victory. I’ll stay quiet until I become a respectable knight.”
“That’s a good plan.”
“Indeed.”
The northern district, having completely lost their will to fight, had some injured children among the esteemed party from the eastern district.
We decided to unleash our healing abilities.
“All right, those who are injured, line up in front of me and Minya. We’ll heal you.”
“Wait, you can use healing magic?”
“Look who it is? It’s none other than the culprit, Ed.”
Don’t call me the culprit, it’s not my fault.
Each and every one of them lined up in front of Minya.
Some of the children who seemed distant from love approached me and received treatment willingly.
As Minya held the hand of an injured child, their expression softened with evident joy.
Despite being in pain, they handled it well. Impressive.
“Are you okay? I’ll heal you now.”
“Yeah.”
“With the soothing light—Heal.”
As Minya chanted the healing spell, they were enveloped in a mesmerizing green light.
Minya’s beautiful golden hair stood out in this moment.
Looking at her like this, she resembled a holy maiden, the saint of the slums’ children.
It’s no wonder everyone falls for her.
“That’s amazing.”
“Yeah.”
Children without any injuries looked on with envy.
And so, the conflict came to a complete end.
It would have been disastrous if we had actually been hit by a fireball. We were unanimous on that.
And, ignominiously, it became known as the “Ed’s Poop Week War.”
It was secretly referred to by another name:
“The Week-long War to Protect the Dignity of Lania, the Valkyrie of Fireball, and Minya, the Holy Maiden of Healing.”
Well, it’s like a topic you’d hear in a tavern, even though I don’t drink.
As for me? If I were to swing my sword, my opponent would seriously die.
In this world of Western-style swords, which are double-edged, if I were to attack with the blade, it would be one thing, but I can’t strike with the hilt.
It’s fine for training, but deadly combat isn’t suited for me.
