Chapter 39 Fishing
Heading out to meet Lania.
First, the three of us secured some bait and headed to the Dridon general store.
“Hey, Dridon-san, do you have fishing rods? Preferably enough for all of us.”
“Yeah, I think they’re over there in the back, look around.”
“Great.”
“Fishing rods, huh? Planning to catch some fish?”
“What else would we use them for?”
“Well, that makes sense. Ahaha.”
And so, today’s goal is fishing.
Sometimes we want to eat fish too. I miss having mackerel or sardines, but catching large fish like that is impossible.
We don’t have the sea nearby.
Even in this world, there are fish in the rivers. The water quality around here is decent, not too muddy, so they should be safe to eat.
In the city, there are a few fishermen who bring in fish that are being consumed by some people.
There’s a famous restaurant called Melbadol Fish Cuisine.
As a resident of the slums, I don’t know the full menu, but I’ve heard it’s delicious.
If I catch the fish myself, I don’t need to buy expensive ones.
Self-sufficiency is a way to save in this otherworld.
In Japan, when professionals handle a large quantity, it tends to lower the cost through economies of scale. But in this otherworld, it’s not the same.
Whether it’s farmers or fishermen, if you catch your own meat or fish, it’s a big profit.
“Thank you for your purchase.”
“Thank you, Dridon-san.”
With the fishing rods in hand, we head to the Melria River, which flows just south of the Trieste City.
This is the area where we previously had fun splashing around with Minya and laughing.
There are still plenty of freshwater crabs in the riverbed.
I also want to come and gather them soon, but today is about fishing.
“Alright, that’s how it goes.”
“Ed, I still don’t get it!”
“It’s easy, easy! Just hold the fishing rod and put the end of the line into the water.”
I demonstrate it with my own rod.
Minya and Lania watch and cautiously imitate my actions.
The current isn’t too strong.
The fishing line hangs lazily in the calm river.
“I’m not catching anything.”
“Minya, it doesn’t happen right away. Fishing requires patience. Waiting is the key.”
“I see, got it!”
And so, we all fish together.
Today, in the sky, we can see small wyverns conducting reconnaissance flights.
They reside in the mountains to the north and are patrolling their territory.
It’s similar to a cat strolling around the neighborhood.
Wyverns aren’t exactly cute creatures, though.
Closer to us, birds fly by.
I’m not sure what kind of birds they are.
One thing is certain—they’re not egg birds.
Flap, flap.
“Oh, got one!”
“Meoww!”
My rod has a hit.
Minya, who was watching beside me, jumps in surprise and lets out a loud voice.
The pull isn’t too intense, but as I reel in the line, the tranquility we had experienced until now feels like a lie.
I wind the line around the homemade reel
Finally, I give a little jerk to the rod, and the line extends with a “whoosh” as the fish rises from the water’s surface.
“Ohh, a fish! You’ve caught a fish!”
“It’s a fish indeed.”
And thus, I successfully catch my first fish.
Now comes the usual routine—appraisal time.
【Messy Trout Fish, Edible】
Hmm. It’s a mass, so it must be a member of the salmon family.
When we call it salmon, it refers to the type that goes to the sea and returns.
“Trout” is the name for the group that spends their entire lives in rivers.
It’s about 20cm long, quite a decent size.
“Wow, amazing, meow!”
Minya is thrilled.
Although she looks like a cat-like beast person, if I recall correctly, she’s an elf.
Upon looking at her face, yes, she has pointed ears like an elf.
Her mouth forms an “ω” shape, and as usual, it seems like she’s about to drool.
She must have been a cat or a cat-like beast person in her past life.
Even without memories, she seems to have inherited those characteristics.
“We should catch enough for everyone like this.”
“Yeah.”
“Alright, let’s go! Heave-ho!”
Now, let’s cast the fishing line again and return to our usual routine.
It’s peaceful again. Nothing special happening.
It’s a bit of a shame that I can’t do any work on the side since I always have to hold the fishing rod.
Anyway, that’s how it goes. We all fish together, and we manage to catch a decent number of fish.
They’re all messy Trout fish.
Though I’m not sure of the exact cause, we couldn’t catch any other fish.
It could be due to various factors, such as the type of bait, or rather, pseudo bait, its size, or even the season.
I return home with Lania, and let’s make lunch.
I make an incision on the fish’s belly and remove its organs.
Since it’s stored in the item box, it won’t spoil, but I’m not sure if the organs are edible, and I’m also concerned about parasites. So, for safety reasons, I remove them.
In this otherworld, it’s a matter of personal responsibility.
Some people say that the best part of fish, like ayu(sweetfish), is its organs.
Now, the minimal preparation is done.
I’d like to grill the fish on skewers, but the magic stove doesn’t work that way.
Instead, I arrange them in a frying pan and sprinkle some salt before cooking them.
Sizzle…
A delightful aroma fills the air.
Minya twitches her nose in a cute manner.
Indeed, she must have been a cat-like beast person in her past life.
Lania’s eyes widen, showing interest.
Today, we’re having herb-grilled messy trout.
To counter the fishy smell, I’ve added a touch of herbal fragrance.
The wild herbs give off a surprisingly pleasant aroma that shouldn’t be underestimated.
As for seasoning, it’s kept simple with just salt.
“Let’s dig in.”
“Let’s dig in!”
Everyone lines up to enjoy the grilled messy trout.
“It’s delicious! This is my first time trying it!”
Minya maintains her usual composure.
Everyone agrees that it’s delicious.
