Chapter 38 What Happen to the Egg.
Sunday.
As I woke up to the sound of church bells echoing through the town, an unexpected piece of good news awaited me.
“Good morning, Minya.”
“Good morning, Edo.”
“Cock-a-doodle-doo.”
Eggbird had laid an egg.
I found it sudden, but considering the Eggbird is already an adult and naturally lays eggs almost every day, it might have been stranger if she suddenly stopped laying them.
I was a bit worried that the change in environment might have affected her egg-laying, but my concerns were alleviated when I saw the egg carefully placed on a makeshift nest lined with grass.
Though Eggbird was sitting on top of the egg, I gently nudged her aside, and the egg emerged from underneath.
“I’m sorry, but can I have an egg, please?”
“Cock-a-doodle-doo, Cock-a-doodle-doo.”
Though it didn’t seem like a protest, the bird made its cries heard.
I put the egg in a small basket and observed the situation.
The egg have disappeared, but the Eggbird sits quietly in her nest.
She doesn’t seem agitated or downcast in any way.
It’s hard to know what a bird is thinking, but she appears to be fine.
I decide to use the egg for breakfast right away.
Since I only have one egg for soup, I decide to put it in.
It’s a soup made with spinach, egg, and onions.
I boil the spinach and onions, bringing it to a boil.
I crack the egg into a deep plate as a substitute for a bowl and stir it with a spoon.
“Is this the egg?”
“Yes, the yellow part is the yolk, and the transparent part around it is the egg white.”
“I see. It’s completely different from frog eggs.”
“Well, yeah.”
In Minya’s mind, eggs are associated with frog imagery.
“When I think of frog eggs, they don’t look very appetizing.”
“They’re probably completely different. I’ve never eaten frog eggs before.”
“I see.”
Well, regardless of the taste of frog eggs, these eggs look just like chicken eggs, so they should be fine.
As I slowly pour the beaten egg into the soup, it spreads out like delicate silk.
“Wow, what’s this? It looks amazing.”
“Yeah, it’s quite beautiful.”
And thus, something resembling a Japanese-style “kakitama” is created.
I actually prefer plain omelettes, but those require at least three eggs to be substantial.
If we were to share just one, I thought kakitama would be a good option.
Classic egg dishes like pudding would be impossible to share with just one egg if we all wanted to have some.
Eggbird’s eggs are slightly larger than chicken eggs.
While others prepare the rest of the meal, we all sit down for breakfast.
It’s a little sad that Lania isn’t here, but we’ll treat her to an egg dish next time.
“Let’s eat.”
“Oh, it’s nostalgic. Egg, right?”
“So, this is an egg dish.”
As expected, Melun and Gid seem familiar with it.
On the other hand, Minya, seeing it for the first time, still has some doubts.
“This is delicious.”
“It’s somehow fluffy and interesting. The flavor is also great.”
The egg soup received a quite positive feedback.
Since it resembled chicken eggs and had a good reputation for being tasty, I wasn’t too worried. However, I couldn’t be certain until I tasted it myself, so now I’m relieved.
When eggs are available, there are numerous recipes and improved dishes that can be made.
In modern-day Japan, eggs are used in a wide variety of dishes.
While some dishes can be made without eggs, the flavor and other aspects would change.
Even bread incorporates eggs into the dough or uses egg yolk on the surface. And I think it’s common to dip fried foods or tonkatsu in beaten eggs before coating them with breadcrumbs.
Even hamburger patties contain eggs, although I’m not sure of the exact reason.
It seems that eggs are used extensively, not just in traditional egg dishes.
While I think of them mainly as ingredients for egg-based dishes, it’s delightful to see how they enhance our culinary experiences.
If I were to be greedy, I would love to have about four of these birds. That way, my family of four could enjoy them every day.
Although they are considered rare monsters, I’ll find a way to make it work.
I’ll make a note of it in my long-term plans.
“Hey, now that the bird has laid an egg, can we dismantle it and make fried chicken?”
“Hey, Minya, you’ve misunderstood.”
“Huh, why? I love fried chicken.”
“It’s not about that. The bird will lay eggs almost every day. So, we won’t turn it into meat.”
“I see. I wanted to have fried chicken.”
“Let’s have rabbit fried chicken again. Let’s be patient with that.”
“Okay.”
EggBird narrowly escaped being turned into meat. Oblivious to the situation, she happily pecked at the grass and relaxed.
Minya, on the other hand, had a face that seemed ready to drool at the thought of fried chicken. Is she still considering making it?
I need to keep an eye on Minya so that she doesn’t turn the bird into fried chicken. Fortunately, Minya sticks to me closely, so there aren’t many opportunities for her to act on her own.
Now, what should I do?
First, I should gather some grass for EggBird’s food and bedding. While I’m at it, I can also collect some wild plants to use as vegetable substitutes.
Since today is Sunday, dinner is planned to be extravagant. Even though we’ve been eating relatively well during weekdays, Sundays are still special.
Religion plays a significant role, as does the availability of bread.
Sunday is bread day, so there is a high demand for jam. I sense that jam sales will be good.
Word has spread even within the castle, and people are coming to buy it regularly. It seems to be selling well.
“Hehehe.”
“Edo, you have a mischievous look on your face.”
“I was just thinking about how profitable the jam will be.”
“Oh yeah, that’s true.”
As I watched Minya give me a suspicious look, I pondered today’s plans.
