- I Confessed to Her Twice, but It Seems I Lost the Chance for a Third Time
- Chapter 45 - Waiting Time
After exchanging introductions, Yamato-san came to stand beside me and leaned against the wall, silently waiting for Aki without engaging in any particular activity. I didn’t know anything about Yamato-san either, so I had no idea what to talk about. I just stood there idly, waiting for Aki as well.
After a while, Yamato-san spoke up.
“Hey?”
“What is it?”
“What do you think about Aki?”
She asked, getting straight to the point. Perhaps it was something she was curious about as a friend… But isn’t that question too direct?
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, do you like Aki?”
I realized that beating around the bush wouldn’t get us anywhere.
“Well, if you’re asking whether I like her or not, then yes, I do. However, until recently, I had feelings for someone else, you see. I’ve just been rejected by them. So, when it comes to romantic feelings, I’m not really sure where I stand right now…”
After hearing my response, Yamato-san seemed to ponder for a moment before she continued.
“…So you like her, I see. Okay. So, imagine if Aki started dating someone else. How would you feel about that?”
Yamato-san asked, prompting me to consider her example. Aki is dating someone else… I wouldn’t feel good about it. But if that’s what Aki chose…
“I wouldn’t feel good about it. But if that’s what Aki chose… I guess I’d support her. Even though I wouldn’t like her not being around.”
“…I see. You’re still like that, huh. I thought Aki was doing her best, but it looks like she needs to try even harder.”
“Oh, by the way, I have a favor to ask.”
Yamato-san suddenly changed the topic and mentioned that she had a request for me. Perhaps it was about what Aki had mentioned before—wanting to spend time together? With that thought in mind, I asked her,
“What is it? If I can help, I’ll listen.”
“I think Aki already talked to you about this, but I also want to start joining you guys more often. Is that okay?”
She conveyed the same message Aki had discussed. I replied,
“Yes, that’s fine. It would be better for Aki to have a friend from our class rather than being alone. Just make sure to talk to Aki about it first, though.”
I added a condition, but Yamato-san understood and agreed.
“Oh, that’s quick. In that case, I’ll go hang out with Aki tomorrow. Thanks!”
She said it with a smile, and that was the end of our conversation.
* * *
After that conversation, we fell silent again for a while. Somehow, this silence was quite uncomfortable. I found it easier to be alone and lost in my own thoughts. Yamato-san didn’t seem like a very talkative person either. Well, since she hangs out with Aki, who is also not very talkative, I guess it wouldn’t make sense for her to be overly chatty. But then again, without being a good listener… As I pondered these thoughts, I felt a bit odd and forced a smile.
“You know, Kondo-kun, you’re not pushy and easygoing. It’s nice.”
Pushy? What does she mean?
“What do you mean?”
“Because many guys tend to be either too forward or overly flattering. It’s a bit tiresome, you know? By the way, Kondo-kun, what do you think of me?”
And again, what do I think? This time, about Yamato-san?
“Well, as the vice president of the student council, you seem to be quite responsible.”
Upon hearing my response, Yamato-san made a bewildered expression and said,
“I didn’t expect that kind of answer. That’s a bit strange.”
“No, I meant, how do you see me as a woman?”
“And how do you see me as a woman?”
Yamato-san… She’s probably quite popular, as Aki mentioned. I think she’s also beautiful. But I don’t really like being asked this kind of question. Come to think of it, I was asked a similar question when I met Aki. What are people who are so popular? Why do they want to hear it from others’ mouths?
“Well, if you want to hear something like ‘beautiful,’ you should ask someone else.”
I wondered if my words sounded cold. However, upon hearing my response, Yamato-san looked somewhat bewildered.
“Oh… I see. Aki’s feelings. Is that what it is?”
She seemingly understands for some reason.
And that’s how Yamato-san reacted to my response.
