ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
After leaving the Okusha Worship Hall, we continued walking toward the summit. At first, we had been enjoying the climb, but the summit was quite a distance away, and we were gradually getting tired. In particular, Riona, who didn’t have much stamina. She looked like she was about to collapse. Well, we had been hiking for over an hour since leaving the Main Hall, so it was understandable.
“…I’m at my limit.”
“Just a little more and the stairs will be over, so hang in there.”
“Let’s take a break once we finish climbing these stairs.”
Encouraging Riona, Reona and I continued climbing the steps. The fact that the stairs we were on were extremely steep was probably a major reason why we were so exhausted. Somehow, after managing to climb all the way up the stairs, we came out into an open area.
This place, apparently called Yotsutsuji, was a small plaza where we could see people resting on the benches that had been set up.
“I’ll go buy some drinks, so you two go ahead and sit down.”
“Thanks, Ryouya.”
“Then I’ll gladly take you up on that offer.”
“I’ll just pick something you two would probably like.”
I was pretty tired myself, but I figured this was a man’s duty, so I offered to buy the drinks. Even a loner like me could at least show a little consideration for tired girls. Of course, I wouldn’t say I only did this because I wanted to look a bit cool in front of them.
Anyway, I walked over to a vending machine nearby, but when I saw the prices displayed there, I was shocked.
“Whoa, even plain water costs over two hundred yen?”
Everything else was over two hundred yen as well, and a cola was close to three hundred yen. Compared to the vending machines near the Main Hall, the prices were nearly double. It was probably because of the cost of transporting the goods all the way up here, but still, it felt ridiculously expensive.
However, I figured it would seem cooler if I didn’t complain and just treated them, so I silently made the purchase. After that, I returned to where Reona and Riona were sitting, handed them the drinks I had bought, and we all started drinking together.
“This brings me back to life.”
“Yeah, I was so thirsty halfway up that this really hit the spot.”
“It’s delicious.”
Riona, who had looked completely exhausted just a little while ago, regained her energy after having a drink. There was still some distance to the summit, but looking at how refreshed the two of them were, it seemed we would be able to keep going a bit longer now.
“Come to think of it… I know it’s a little late to say this now, but the view here is absolutely gorgeous.”
“Yeah, I was too tired earlier to really pay attention to the scenery, but the view is amazing indeed.”
“You can see all of Kyoto City from here. That’s why it’s the perfect spot for taking photos.”
“Looks like Riona’s completely back to normal.”
Reona looked warmly at Riona, who was sparkling with excitement as she snapped photos of the scenery.Even though they were twins, in moments like this, Reona somehow felt more like the older sister, which was kind of strange to look at.
After enjoying the view and taking a good break, we started walking again toward the summit.
The trail was just as steep as it had been up to Yotsutsuji, so even though we had rested thoroughly, by the time we reached the summit, the three of us were completely wiped out.
“Finally, the summit.”
“Yeah, it seriously took forever to get here.”
“I’m so tired I think I’ve used up my whole week’s worth of exhaustion today…”
“A week’s worth of exhaustion… How relatable.”
Finally reaching the summit, but to be honest, the view was… Underwhelming. It was, well, mediocre. Honestly, if we were talking about the scenery alone, the view from Yotsutsuji where we had rested earlier had been way better.
Hearing that the summit was 233 meters above sea level, I had imagined some grand, spectacular view, so it goes without saying that I was a little disappointed. Reona and Riona seemed to feel the same way; their expressions were hard to describe. For now, we took a commemorative photo in front of the summit sign and then went to pay our respects at the Kamisha Shrine Site.
“Ryouya, look! Over there, they have free omikuji!”
“Whoa, it’s pretty rare to be able to draw an omikuji for free.”
“Since we’re already here, let’s all draw one together!”
At Reona’s suggestion, the three of us decided to draw omikuji. I had a feeling that omikuji drawn at places like this tended to be pretty accurate, so I really hoped for a good result.
“Ah, I got a daikichi!”
“Uh, mine says… ‘kyō-go-daikichi’.”
While Reona was rejoicing over drawing a daikichi (great blessing), I found myself puzzled after drawing a “kyō-go-daikichi” (bad luck followed by great blessing) for the first time in my life.
It probably meant exactly what it said—that I’d have bad luck at first but then eventually great luck—but still, I wasn’t sure if I should be happy about it or not. Depending on how bad the “bad luck” part was, it felt like the “great blessing” that came afterward might get overshadowed by the “bad luck.”
“How about you, Riona?”
“I got daidaikichi (super great blessing).”
“Huh, that’s definitely higher than just daikichi, right? That’s amazing!”
“I’ve never even heard of daidaikichi before.”
Maybe because she was so happy about the result, Riona had a somewhat proud look on her face.
