Satisfied after seeing the results of our omikuji, we began descending the mountain, aiming for the crossroads where we had rested earlier. Our plan was to have lunch at the crossroads and then make our way down to the base. We were taking a different route than when we had climbed to the summit, but it seemed we would have no trouble reaching our destination.
“Once we leave Fushimi Inari, it’s time for us to prepare for the trip back home… Doesn’t it make you feel a little bittersweet to leave this place?”
“Yeah. Kyoto’s not a place we can come to very often, so that makes it even harder.”
“These past three days really flew by.”
“Right? They always say fun times feel short, and I guess it’s true after all.”
“I wish regular classes could feel this quick too.”
I had already expressed my gratitude yesterday, but thanks to Reona and Riona, this school trip had been the most fun I’d ever had, and I felt nothing but appreciation for them. I never would have dreamed that a day would come when I could enjoy a school trip this much.
Because it had been so much fun, I couldn’t help but feel extremely depressed at the thought of returning to our usual school life starting Monday after the weekend. Until now, it had always been the school trips that felt more depressing, so I realized my perspective had changed because of them.
While thinking about such things, we made it back to the crossroads and headed straight into the teahouse, where we each ordered whatever we felt like eating.
“Going down feels easier than climbing up, but walking is still tiring after all.”
“We’ve still got a long way to go.”
“Let’s make sure we eat a good lunch here and build up our energy for the trip back!”
“Yeah. Once we get to the bottom, we just need to ride a bus and get on the bullet train ride to get home. Let’s do our best until then.”
As we chatted like that, we ate our meals. The seats we were shown to were right by the window, and since we had a beautiful view from there, I felt a little lucky to be able to get this spot.
After leisurely enjoying our meal, we set off once again, this time aiming for the foot of the mountain. We took breaks along the way and snapped some photos, so it ended up taking about an hour to get back to the main shrine.
“We still have time, but should we just head back to the bus now?”
“Ah, before that, could you wait a bit? There’s a charm I want to buy here to take home.”
“When I came to Fushimi Inari with Onee-chan, we promised we’d definitely buy this one charm.”
“Okay, we still have plenty of time, so let’s do that.”
We headed straight for the shop area. There, the two of them picked up card-type charms labeled Myōbu Enmusubi-mamori.
“I see, so you wanted a matchmaking charm. By the way, I’m not familiar with the word Myōbu that comes before Enmusubi-mamori. What does it mean?”
“Myōbu refers to foxes that serve the Inari gods, but it also can mean ‘wife.'”
“The Myōbu Enmusubi-mamori is the ultimate charm for bringing good relationships. You’re supposed to write your own name and the name of the person you want to form a bond with on the back.”
After explaining this to me, the two of them purchased the Myōbu Enmusubi-mamori and immediately began writing names on the back using the pens provided. I couldn’t help but wonder: who exactly were they so eager to form a bond with? I was curious, but I couldn’t bring myself to do something as cowardly as sneaking a peek at the names they were writing.
The kind of guy that girls like them would be interested in had to be some outgoing, popular dude. Definitely someone like the natural enemy of an introvert like me. All those so-called “normies” should just explode and disappear from this world.
Thinking such dark thoughts, I returned to the bus a little before the scheduled meeting time.
Once everyone’s roll call was completed, the bus departed and started heading toward Kyoto Station.
“So, how about we continue our love talk from this morning?”
“We’ve already talked about it enough these past few days, so can we please give it a rest now?”
Hearing Reona’s words, I raised my voice in protest. Seriously, how could they keep talking about the same topic and not get bored? As for me, I had been full to bursting a long time ago. I had enough of a love talk already.
“Geez, fine. Since Riona looks like she’s exhausted too, I guess I’ll let you off the hook this time.”
Apparently unable to bear her exhaustion any longer, Riona had, at some point, leaned against me and fallen soundly asleep, her breathing steady. Even during the climb up Fushimi Inari, she had said it felt like she’d gotten a week’s worth of fatigue, so it seemed she’d finally hit her limit.
Since her partner in crime was now fast asleep, Reona reluctantly gave up on her plan. However, there was one comment she made during our conversation that I couldn’t ignore.
“…Wait, this time? Does that mean you’re planning to do it again in the future?”
“Of course! I don’t know when the next time will be, but please look forward to it!”
“Oh, come on… You’re serious…?”
If Reona said so, then there was no doubt I would be dragged into love talk again. At this rate, it wouldn’t be surprising if I ended up developing a full-blown fear of love talk. At least, I could take comfort in the fact that, during this school trip, it was unlikely they’d try again—that was my one small blessing amid all the misfortune.
