ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
After finishing the spotted garden eel parfait, we left the prefectural aquarium and began moving toward our next destination. Next up was the Movie Village located in Uzumasa, Ukyo Ward. The Movie Village was a theme park where visitors could experience the atmosphere of historical drama sets, and with its many attractions, it was said to be a place you could enjoy for an entire day. After riding the bus for a while and arriving at our destination, we bought tickets and immediately headed inside.
“It feels like we time-slipped into the Edo period.”
“It kind of looks like the place we three went after the open campus during summer break, doesn’t it?”
“Yeah, seeing this view reminds me of the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter.”
“It’s already been about a month since then. Time really flies.”
That place preserved traditional buildings like white-walled streets and townhouses from the Edo period, so the concept was a bit different from this recreated setting, but yeah. I could feel the familiarity between this theme park and the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter.
“Anyway, like we talked about beforehand, let’s go rent our costumes.”
“Yeah. Riona, have you decided what you’re going to wear?”
“I was struggling with it until just a moment ago, but now I’ve decided what to wear. What about you, Onee-chan?”
“I’ve decided too.”
At the Movie Village, you could rent various costumes of characters that appeared in historical dramas. Since Riona had said, “If we’re going to the Movie Village, I want to try wearing a costume,” we all decided to rent outfits.
“I’m going to get changed, so once I’m done, I’ll wait around here.”
“Okay! I’m looking forward to seeing your costume, Ryouya-kun.”
“Look forward to mine and Onee-chan’s too.”
We entered the rental shop, told the staff what costumes we wanted, and then split up to get dressed. For the record, I chose the costume of Hijikata Toshizō from the Shinsengumi. I didn’t have any special attachment to Hijikata Toshizō himself—it was just that the costume looked really cool and stirred my boyish heart, so I picked it.
After I finished getting dressed and waited for a while, Riona came out first. Apparently, she had chosen a ninja costume. Riona, dressed as a kunoichi, looked absolutely perfect.
“So you picked a ninja outfit, huh, Riona?”
“Yeah. I wanted to try wearing a kunoichi costume. Is that Hijikata Toshizō you’re wearing, Ryouya?”
“Correct. I’m surprised you figured it out.”
“The costume from the Boshin War is pretty famous.”
Just as always, Riona was really knowledgeable. I really wanted her to teach me in detail someday how she managed to remember so many different things. As I was thinking that, Reona finished dressing and came out too.
“Sorry to keep you both waiting!”
“I see. Reona, you chose a maiko costume, huh.”
“Yeah, I figured when in Kyoto, this would be the way to go.”
“It really suits you, Onee-chan.”
Compared to Riona, who looked adorably cute, Reona had a mature, graceful aura that left me at a loss for words except to say she was simply beautiful. The proof of that was the number of men around us who kept staring at her.
“I get that Riona’s a kunoichi, but Ryouya-kun, what exactly are you supposed to be?”
“This is Hijikata Toshizō’s costume from the Shinsengumi.”
“Oh, I’ve heard of the Shinsengumi! What kind of group were they again?”
“Uh, umm…”
Just like Reona, I only knew the name “Shinsengumi,” so I got tongue-tied at Reona’s question. Then, Riona, standing next to me, spoke up.
“The Shinsengumi was a group formed at the end of the Edo period to maintain public order in Kyoto. Other famous members besides Hijikata Toshizō are Kondō Isami and Okita Sōji.”
“That’s what she said.”
“So even you didn’t really know about them, Ryouya-kun.”
“To be honest, I picked the costume purely because it looked cool.”
While we were chatting like that, we left the rental shop. Now that we had all finished changing into our costumes, it was finally time to start seriously exploring.
“Hey, let’s take a picture in front of that bridge!”
“Okay, okay, but don’t pull my hand so hard!”
Dragged by a hyper Reona, I headed over to the bridge. Even though Reona grabbed my hand like it was second nature to her, I was able to accept her gestures without a second thought too because I had gotten used to their antics. At this rate, I might not even mind if she did anything incredulous to me.
“Get closer together… Okay, I’m taking it! Say cheese!”
I took a picture sandwiched between Reona and Riona. In the photo, there was me dressed as Hijikata Toshizō, Riona in her kunoichi costume, and Reona as a maiko—it made for quite an eye-catching picture.
“I’ll post it on SNS later like always, okay?”
“Yeah, do whatever you want.”
“By the way, whenever I upload a picture with you in it, Ryouya’s Mama always likes the picture right away.”
“What!? My mom is following you too?!”
Learning the shocking truth that my mom was a follower of Reona’s SNS, I couldn’t help but raise my voice. Which meant she had seen all those kinds of pictures too, right?
Ugh, seriously!?
It wouldn’t have been so bad if it were Mio, but having my mom see them was just way too embarrassing. Actually, the fact that Mom even used that kind of trendy, social media platform was already surprising enough.
