After that, I started doing housework together with Reona. Thanks to her helping out efficiently and briskly, we managed to finish half of today’s tasks in no time. In any case, Reona’s quick work allowed us to get this far much faster than I had imagined. Right now, we were taking a break at the dining table, sipping our drinks.
“…You’re actually pretty good at housework, huh.”
“What do you mean, ‘actually’?”
“Well, you know… Riona once told me that your room is always messy after all.”
Because of that, I had just assumed Reona wasn’t very good at housework, but it turned out I had been completely wrong.
“Believe it or not, I’m actually pretty good at housework. If anything, Riona’s the one who’s bad at it.”
“Eh? Really?”
“Yeah, Riona can be a bit clumsy sometimes.”
“Ahh… Now that you mention it, I guess that’s true.”
Riona had dropped her pencil case through a gap in her backpack before, and I remembered a time during home economy class when she stabbed her own finger with a needle and ended up in the nurse’s office. She definitely had some clumsy moments.
“By the way, I make about eighty percent of the lunches you and I eat.”
“Wow. You’re way more impressive than I thought, Reona.”
“See, there you go again with the ‘than I thought’ part. Ryoya-kun, I really think you should show me a little more respect.”
Reona said this with a slightly dissatisfied expression. Seeing her like that, I quickly tried to smooth things over.
“Don’t worry, I respect you a ton. So much, in fact, I feel like I’m about to explode from it.”
“Specifically, what do you respect about me?”
“You’re beautiful, have a great personality, amazing communication skills, you’re good at both studying and sports, and you’re even kind to gloomy guys like me. Honestly, not respecting you would be impossible.”
“Fweh!?”
When I spoke my thoughts out loud without thinking, Reona let out a weird little squeak and blushed bright red. Huh? That’s not the reaction I was expecting at all. I thought she’d just puff up proudly and say, “Right? I am pretty amazing if I may say so myself,” or something like that. This totally caught me off guard.
“…Don’t hit me with something like that out of nowhere.”
“Come on, I’m sure guys must’ve told you stuff like that all the time, right?”
“It’s because it came from you, Ryoya-kun… After all, you’re someone who never says things like that… That’s why your words had a bigger impact…”
“Well yeah, I definitely wouldn’t say that kind of thing under normal circumstances.”
If I had said anything like that out loud, people would’ve thought I was creepy or something, so aside from the time I slipped up at the purikura booth right before summer break, I never said that sort of thing. And even then, I was talking to myself. I didn’t think anyone had heard me.
“…Well, let’s get back to work, shall we?”
“Yeah, let’s wrap up what’s left.”
Still blushing, Reona and I jumped back into the remaining housework—washing dishes, cleaning, and everything else—and quickly finished up all of today’s tasks. Just as we wrapped up, Mio came home carrying a grocery bag.
“Welcome back.”
“I’m home, Onii-chan. Oh, Reona-san, you’re here too.”
“Yup, just dropping by.”
At first, Mio had been nervous when both Reona and Riona were around the house, but lately she had gotten so used to them that their presence felt completely normal to her.
“Riona-san is not here today?”
“Ah, she’s sleeping on Ryoya-kun’s bed.”
“Well, it was her first day back at school in a while. I’m sure she’s tired.”
“Yeah, Riona’s never had much stamina, even as a kid.”
Even after hearing that Riona was asleep in my bed, Mio didn’t react at all. Maybe her sense of what was normal had gotten a little warped too. As we chatted, Mio began unpacking the groceries—only to suddenly cry out.
“Ah! We’re out of eggs!? I can’t make omurice for dinner without them!”
“None left in the fridge?”
“Nope. We used the last of them for dinner yesterday.”
“How about changing the dinner menu?”
“I’ve already made up my mind for omurice tonight, and I don’t want to change it.”
In that case, as much of a hassle as it was, we had no choice but to go out and buy some.
Omurice without eggs is just ketchup rice, after all.
“In that case, I’ll go buy some. You just got back, Mio, so you must be tired.”
“Really? Are you sure?”
“Yeah, leave it to me.”
Thanks to Reona helping out with the chores I had planned to do on my own, things went a lot smoother today, so I didn’t mind doing at least this much. I picked up the grocery bag that had been left on the dining table and headed for the front door, when Reona spoke up.
“Since we’re going out anyway, I’ll come with you.”
“It’s just a trip to buy eggs. You can stay here and relax, it’s fine.”
“Nope, I’m coming.”
I tried to decline, feeling like something annoying might happen if Reona tagged along, but she was clearly dead set on coming. Seeing that I wasn’t going to be able to talk her out of it, I gave up and agreed to let her come with me.
