ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
“…It’s morning, huh.”
As I slowly got up from bed after waking, I murmured that to myself. Summer vacation had ended yesterday, and finally, school was starting again today. Since I had gone to bed early last night, it seemed I had woken up before my alarm went off.
When I looked at the clock and realized it was still pretty early, I considered going back to sleep. However, I decided against it, since if I overslept, there was a chance Reona and Riona would crawl into bed with me. Those two had no problem stripping down to their underwear just to avoid wrinkles in their uniforms, so I couldn’t afford to let my guard down. Suppressing my desire to go back to sleep, I got out of bed and headed to the dining room.
“Good morning, Onii-chan. It’s rare for you to be up at this hour.”
“Morning. Yeah, I went to bed pretty early last night.”
“You’re looking gloomy this morning. What’s wrong?”
“Oh, come on. You’re asking even though you totally know why.”
There was no reason for my gloomy mood other than the end of summer vacation. Especially since the post-break season was packed with annoying events like the school trip and the cultural festival. It was hell for a loner like me. Once we arrived at the dining room, we toasted some bread in the toaster and started eating.
“Onii-chan, your school trip is to Kyoto, right?”
“Yeah, it’s a three-day, two-night thing. Such a drag, I really don’t want to go.”
“That kind of negative attitude is just so you.”
“Honestly, if I were excited about it, that’d be way creepier.”
I was nothing like the radiant types like Reona and Riona. As I was thinking that, I finished my breakfast and went back to my room to get ready for the day.
“Do I really have to wear this…?”
After changing into my uniform, I mumbled that while looking at the pair rings on my desk. They’d told me to wear them even at school, but if I were being honest, I really wanted to refuse. Still, I doubted they’d allow that though.
“…Maybe I’ll pretend I forgot and see how they react.”
I decided to test Reona and Riona’s response first. A little while later, they came into my room.
“Oh, you’re already up?”
“We thought you’d still be asleep, Ryouya.”
“I went to bed early last night, so I woke up earlier than I thought.”
I gave them the same explanation I’d told Mio earlier. Hearing that, the two of them looked satisfied.
“Alright, let’s head out soon.”
“Ah, wait a second. Ryouya-kun, aren’t you forgetting something?”
“Yes. The most important thing you shouldn’t forget.”
So they weren’t going to let it slide after all. Wearing pair rings to school would definitely draw attention, but there was no way I could go against Reona and Riona.
“Come to think of it, we did say I was supposed to wear them to school too.”
“You’re not allowed to forget anymore.”
“If you do it again, there will be punishment.”
Acting as if I had really forgotten, I put the rings on the ring fingers of my right and left hands. The two of them watched me with satisfied looks on their faces. Then, we left the house and began heading to school.
“The school trip is coming up soon, huh.”
“Yeah. The only saving grace is that if I get through this year, there won’t be another next year.”
“It’s such a fun event, but Ryouya doesn’t seem excited about it at all.”
“To me, it’s nothing but a painful ordeal I need to go through.”
Unlike Reona and Riona, who had lots of friends, for a loner like me, the school trip was pure suffering. Just as I was thinking that, Reona suddenly said something unexpected.
“Don’t worry, Ryouya-kun. You’re in the same group as me and Riona.”
“Impossible. Our trip destinations are different, so that’s not possible.”
For the school trip, we had to choose between Hokkaido, Okinawa, and Kyoto. Reona and Riona had picked Hokkaido. Since I chose Kyoto, there was no way we’d be in the same group.
“Oh, that’s fine. Riona and I had our destination changed to Kyoto.”
“So you won’t be alone, Ryouya.”
“…Huh!?”
I had no idea what they were talking about. I’d seen Reona getting all hyped up with her friends about going to Hokkaido more than once, so I could hardly believe she had changed her destination.
“We felt bad about leaving you all alone, so we asked and got it changed.”
“We can’t let Ryouya go somewhere without our supervision.”
“…Now you two are totally acting like you’re my guardians…”
I wasn’t a little kid, you know. But still, if those two were my guardians, I had a feeling they’d interfere with every single aspect of my life. I could already picture being placed under constant surveillance with them as my guardians.
“So that’s how it is. We’re counting on you.”
“Let’s make some memories, the three of us.”
“Yeah, got it.”
Well, if Reona and Riona were going to be in the same group, at least I wouldn’t have to go around alone during the free time. That meant the trip wouldn’t be boring either, so in the end, maybe it worked out for the best?
“Huh, you’re accepting being in the same group as us pretty smoothly.”
“Old Ryouya would’ve made up some excuse to get out of it.”
“Somehow, it’s just become natural to hang out with you two.”
We’d spent practically all of summer vacation together, so I didn’t even think twice about it anymore. Who knew, maybe even the things I still resisted now would stop bothering me eventually, and I’d just start accepting them like it was second nature to me.
