ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
As I was thinking about all that, there came a knock at the door. It was Eren-san, Reona and Riona’s mother. Although she should have been in her forties, she looked so youthful that you wouldn’t have guessed it.
“Sorry to keep you waiting, everyone. We’re ready now.”
“Okay, let’s go.”
“Looking forward to it this year too!”
Following the three of them, Mio and I left Reona’s room. But the moment we stepped into the dining room, party crackers suddenly burst with a loud pop.
“Happy birthday, Reona, Riona!”
The one holding the crackers and saying that was their father, Kaito-san.
“Papa, don’t you think you set off the crackers a little too early?”
“Normally you’d wait until everyone say ‘happy birthday’ first, don’t you think so?”
“Ah, sorry. I got a bit carried away.”
Kaito-san, being stared at with half-lidded eyes by Reona and Riona, answered with an embarrassed smile. Watching that, we all took our seats at the dining table. The dining room had also been beautifully decorated for the birthday party, and in the center of the table sat a large, homemade whole cake. Just from that, it was clear how much their parents loved them.
“Well then. Now that everything’s ready, let’s start the birthday party.”
“Once we light the candles, we’ve got to sing the traditional song like always.”
“I’ll light the candles. Onee-chan, can you handle the lights?”
“Yeah, got it.”
Riona lit the candles shaped like the numbers one and seven using a lighter, and once she confirmed the flames, Reona turned off the lights in the dining room. Then we all started singing the birthday song beginning with “Happy Birthday to You.” Reona was wildly off-pitch the entire time, so she was probably hopelessly tone-deaf.
“Happy birthday, Reona, Riona!”
“Congrats to both of you!”
“Congratulations.”
As the song ended, Mio, Eren-san, Kaito-san, and I each said our words of congratulations and clapped. Reona and Riona, wrapped in our applause and well wishes, blew out the candles. After that, we all began eating the food that had been prepared. The menu looked like something straight out of a home party scene in an overseas drama, and needless to say, it tasted absolutely amazing.
“So Reona and Riona are seventeen now, huh? Thinking about how they’ll be adults next year… Time really flew by just like that, huh?”
“Yeah, in my mind, they still feel like little kids.”
“Come on. That image is way too outdated.”
“It’s time you updated to the latest version.”
Reona and Riona looked just a little exasperated at Eren-san’s words. Still, the sight of the four of them having fun as a family painted a perfect picture.
I really wish I could have a birthday party with my own family like this someday… Even though there’s a high chance I’ll end up single for life.
That thought still crossed my mind. Mio, on the other hand, was cute enough that it was hard to believe we shared the same genes. She’d definitely be able to get married. So I’d just have to look forward to being invited to my niece’s or nephew’s birthday parties.
“Still, I never expected Reona and Riona to invite anyone outside the family to their birthday party.”
“They’ve never even hinted at doing that before, so it honestly surprised me.”
“Ryouya-kun and Mio-chan are basically family to us.”
“To Onee-chan and I, they are not strangers anymore.”
“Wow… For Reona and Riona to say that much… They really love you two, huh?”
Hearing Reona and Riona’s words, Eren-san smiled brightly and said that. Saying something like that in front of their parents… Was that really okay for them to do that? Well, the two of them probably thought it’d be okay, which was why they went ahead and said it.

Chapter 56: Now It’s Your Turn, Ryouya-kun
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
“By the way, Yagami-kun, what exactly is your relationship with Reona and Riona? I know you saved their lives, of course, but I can’t help thinking there’s more to it.”
“Well, that’s…”
As expected, Kaito-san asked about my relationship with the girls, and I found myself at a loss for words. As their father, he probably couldn’t help but be concerned about his cute daughters. While I was still trying to figure out how to answer, Reona suddenly dropped a bombshell.
“Ryouya-kun and we are in the kind of relationship where we’d get matching rings as a birthday present.”
“Huh?! Seriously!?”
“Onii-chan, is that true!?”
“Heeey, I’d like you to explain that a bit more to Mama.”
Mio and Kaito-san reacted with surprise, while Ellen-san looked incredibly intrigued. Of course they’d misunderstand if she said something like that! I hurried to try and clear things up, but then Riona followed up with an even more outrageous comment.
“Ryouya and us are exactly in the kind of relationship Papa and Mama are thinking about.”
“Wait, for real? There wasn’t even a hint of a guy around your two’s life before and now this is already happening for real…?”
“Ryouya-kun, you’ve got both hands full of flowers. You’re not to be underestimated, huh?”
“…I can’t believe my gloomy, loner brother’s finally having the spring of his life.”
It was painfully obvious that everyone present had completely misunderstood the situation, and I couldn’t think of a single way to clear it up. This was what they called a checkmate. I was utterly cornered with no escape.
After that, Ellen-san kept throwing excited questions at me while Kaito-san was clearly in full “I won’t hand over my daughter” mode and as for Mio, she interrogated me like a detective, digging into every detail. A considerable amount of time passed before we were finally done eating and chatting. With everything wrapped up, Mio and I stood from our seats.
“Well, I guess we’ll be heading home now.”
“Ah, Ryouya-kun. Wait a second. Aren’t you forgetting something?”
“Something…?”
“There’s something you’re supposed to give to me and Onee-chan.”
“…Oh, right. I still haven’t given you your birthday presents.”
Thanks to Reona and Riona making all those misleading remarks, I’d completely forgotten about that. I figured I’d just hand over the pair rings quickly and be on my way.
“But, you know, just receiving a present feels a little boring.”
“Since it’s a special occasion, we want Ryouya to put the rings on us.”
“Huh? Wait, that’s…”
Even though they’d been putting me under massive psychological pressure just minutes ago, the two of them clearly weren’t done messing with me. As I was thinking that, Reona and Riona picked up the box with the pair rings from the dining table.
“Anyway. Since we were the ones who brought it up, Riona and I will put Ryouya-kun’s rings on first.”
“Just hold still.”
“…Hey, wait!”
They each grabbed one of my hands and, in a flash, slid the rings onto the ring fingers of my right and left hands.
“Now it’s your turn, Ryouya-kun.”
“Put it on our left ring fingers.”
Reona and Riona casually held out their left ring fingers as if it were the most natural thing in the world. With Ellen-san, Kaito-san, and Mio all watching, there was no way I could refuse. So I had no choice but to obediently slip the rings onto each of their left ring fingers. Reona and Riona looked absolutely overjoyed, but I couldn’t help wondering if this was really okay.
“By the way, you’ll be wearing the rings every day, just so you know.”
“You’re not allowed to take them off without our permission.”
“Wait, even at school…?”
“Yup, of course.”
Our school had pretty relaxed rules, so things like dyed hair or wearing accessories were technically allowed. So as long as it wasn’t during gym class, there wouldn’t be a problem—but no matter how I looked at it, these pair rings were bound to attract attention.
“That’s a bit too much. Could you cut me some slack on that?”
“Nope. We already decided on that.”
“We’ll be checking every day to see if you’re wearing them, Ryouya-kun.”
At this point, there was no point in arguing with them. I had no choice but to give up. School after summer break was already something I dreaded, and now the stress had just doubled.
And thanks to everything that had just happened, there was absolutely no doubt the misunderstanding had deepened even further. I couldn’t see any way to turn this around anymore.
What the hell am I supposed to do now?
