Chapter 52: That’s Not a Good Enough Reason

As we continued shopping and walking around, Reona seemed to have spotted something and stopped to talk to us.

“Oh, look. It’s a cat café.”

“Hmm, looks like it’s pretty crowded.”

“Everyone looks like they’re having fun.”

Since the storefront had glass walls, we could see a little inside. There were a lot of people interacting freely with cats that roamed around the café at their own pace.

“Since we’re already here, why don’t we go in too?”

“I’m in. I wanna pet some cats.”

“If you two are saying that, I’ll come along then.”

After checking in at the entrance and ordering drinks, we headed into the area with the cats. Apparently, the drink system worked by calling you with a buzzer when your order was ready, and you had to pick it up yourself.

“This is my first time at a cat café, but… So this is what it looks like inside, huh.”

“That means Onee-chan and I stole yet another one of Ryouya’s firsts.”

Reona and Riona looked oddly pleased with themselves. I had no idea what value they saw in taking my “firsts,” but I didn’t feel like bothering to call them out on it.

“This is advice for first-timer Ryouya-kun, but you should approach cats slowly while crouching down.”

“If your posture’s too high, you might come off as intimidating or scary to them.”

“I see. So there’s a trick to how you interact with them.”

Following their lecture, I lowered my posture and approached a nearby cat. When I gently petted its body, the cat looked like it was feeling good from my touch. As I continued petting it for a while, the buzzer in my pocket went off, so I went to pick up our drinks. When I sat down and started drinking, the same cat I had been petting came and settled on my lap.

“Huh? So they’ll come up to you on their own sometimes.”

“They don’t usually do that, so I think you’re pretty lucky, Ryouya-kun.”

“Yeah, I’m jealous.”

Looking around, no one else seemed to have a cat sitting on their lap, so I figured I was definitely lucky. As I was thinking that, Reona turned the capsule toy machine installed in the shop and brought over a capsule.

“Oh. It’s set up here so you can give the cats some treats.”

As she said that, Reona took out a treat from the capsule. Immediately, cats drawn by the scent swarmed around her feet.

“Whoa! They’re all coming over!”

“Cats are weak against food after all.”

While I was surprised by the sight, the two of them remained calm. They probably knew this would happen from the beginning. But the cat sitting on my lap didn’t make any move, even with the treats nearby.

Just getting along with a female cat was enough to make them say that—who knew what they’d do if it were an actual human girl. Well, I couldn’t imagine such a girl showing up anytime soon in the future anyway.

Wanting to escape the accusing glares from Reona and Riona, I gently lifted the cat off my lap and moved to another seat. But the cat followed me and got back onto my lap again.

Even after that, I changed seats a few more times before leaving the cat café, but each time it chased after me and sat on my lap again. Needless to say, the looks from the two of them got progressively more intense.

Reona and Riona said that with completely serious expressions. At this rate, they were definitely going to sit on my lap, so I tried reasoning with them somehow.

“We won’t let you leave until you let us overwrite the scent of that female on your lap.”
