Chapter 50: That’s Exactly What Riona and I Are Thinking of Picking

“So, what do you actually want? If there’s nothing in particular, I’ll just pick something myself.”

“In that case, I’ve been wanting a new accessory for a while now, so maybe I’ll go with that.”

“I want an accessory too.”

“I see, accessories, huh…”

Accessories were one of the suggestions Mio gave me, but I had ruled them out right away because I figured I didn’t have the required fashion sense for picking them. But apparently, that was exactly what the two of them wanted.

“Oh. This time, Riona and I will choose them.”

“You don’t need to say anything, Ryouya. You just need to pay for them, that’s all.”

“Okay, I’ll leave the choosing to you two then.”

I thought for sure they were going to make me help pick something out like usual, but apparently this time was different. Well, honestly, it was better for me if they chose. It would be quicker that way too.

After that, we headed to the accessory shop inside the shopping mall. I wondered what they’d pick, and then the two of them reached for a pair of rings on display.

“Wait, you’re not seriously telling me to buy those, right?”

“That’s exactly what Riona and I are thinking of picking.”

“We want you to buy them for us.”

“No, no. That’s a bit much, don’t you think?”

Sure, rings are accessories, but they’re on a whole different level compared to necklaces or earrings.

“…Fine. They’re for you two to wear, right?”

The two of them were even closer than typical sisters, so even if they wore matching rings, it wouldn’t be that strange. For a second, I thought they were planning to make me wear one, but surely not…

“What are you talking about? They’re for us to wear with you, Ryouya-kun.”

“Onee-chan and I wouldn’t leave the loner Ryouya out.”

“Wait, hang on! There are way too many things to address here! I don’t even know where to start!”

First of all, how are the three of us supposed to use two rings? 

But apparently they’d anticipated my confusion, because they answered right away.

“By the way, we’re buying two sets. One for me and one for Riona—so Ryouya-kun, you’ll be wearing both.”

“So it works for three people just fine.”

I see. That way, the three of us can all wear the rings. But from the outside, I’m going to look like some scumbag wearing two matching rings from two different girls…

“Anyway, we want you to buy these.”

“Yeah, but…”

“Didn’t you just say earlier you’d buy them without complaining? Don’t tell me that was a lie, Ryouya?”

With Riona pressuring me that much, I had no room to argue. She had me cornered with my own words. At this point, resisting would be meaningless. So, with no other choice, I took the pair rings they picked and headed to the register with them. Buying two sets came out to nearly fifteen thousand yen. It was going to be a pretty painful expense for my wallet.

“Excuse me, we’d like to get engravings on both sets as well.”

“In that case, please write the text you’d like engraved on this form.”

Just as I was about to pay, Reona spoke to the store clerk and asked for engravings. Then, she immediately started writing on the form she received.

“Here you go, please engrave this.”

“…Huh!?”

The store clerk, who had been all smiles until now, let out a surprised voice the moment she looked at the form. On the form were written “Ryouya & Reona” and “Ryouya & Riona.” It was no wonder she was surprised. If I were in the clerk’s shoes, I’d definitely think it was strange to engrave “Ryouya” on both sets.

The store clerk must’ve had a lot of thoughts, but she quickly returned to her business smile and told us the engraving would take about fifteen minutes, then headed into the back.

“I’m definitely going to be the talk of the staff room after this.”

“Well, honestly, it’d be weird if you weren’t.”

“Who gets the same name engraved on two different sets of pair rings, seriously?”

At least Reona and Riona seemed to be aware this was out of the ordinary. Though in their case, they were clearly doing it on purpose.

“So, what do we do about the presents? Since we picked them together, it’s not much of a surprise anymore. I could just give them today to you two.”

“They say giving gifts early brings bad luck. It’s better to wait until tomorrow.”

“Wait, really?”

“Yeah. It’s said to remind people of funerals, so it’s not considered good practice.”

“Got it, we’ll wait then.”

As always, I was impressed by how much Riona knew. I decided I’d give them the gifts tomorrow during the birthday party at their place.

Chapter 51: I’m Too Hurt From the Shock of Being Lied to by Ryouya-kun

After receiving the engraved pair rings, we left the accessory shop for the time being.

“So, what do Reona and Riona plan to do after this?”

“Well, since we came all the way to a shopping mall we don’t usually visit, I want to do some shopping.”

“I see. Then go ahead and enjoy yourselves.”

Just as I said that and turned to leave, the two of them grabbed onto my arms firmly.

“Hey now, Ryouya-kun, where do you think you’re going, trying to leave us behind?”

“We won’t let you escape.”

“No, I just thought I’d head home since we agreed today would be my free day.”

During summer vacation, I’d been spending almost every day with Reona and Riona, so I wanted a little time to relax by myself for once.

“Oh, that agreement was void the moment you lied to us.”

“That’s why you’re sticking with us today, too.”

“I only lied to surprise you with the gift! Can’t you at least forgive me for that?”

“Today, as a special treat, we’ll pick Ryouya-kun’s outfit for him.”

“It’s payback for helping us pick our swimsuits last time.”

“Ehh~ Come on, it’ll be fun. Let us pick something for you since we’re already here.”

“We want to dress Ryouya up to suit our tastes.”

It sounded like a hassle, so I tried to turn them down, but they were already fully into it. Based on past experience, once they got like this, there was no stopping them. I resigned myself to becoming their dress-up doll. After entering an apparel shop, I tried on a full outfit they recommended.

“Yup, as expected, the combo of a white summer knit top and black skinny pants is simple but really nice.”

“You look more stylish than usual. It gives you a different vibe.”

“…I’ve never worn stuff like summer knits or skinnies before, so it just feels weird.”

“Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it eventually.”

Since I didn’t care about fashion, I usually wore printed T-shirts and straight denim pants. Summer knits felt too showy, and I didn’t like the tight fit of skinny pants, so I had never even considered wearing them before.

“Hey, try on this jacket.”

“Like this?”

When I put on the short-sleeved tailored jacket Riona handed me, Reona spoke up with a look of admiration.

“Whoa, not bad. It suits you.”

“Wearing a jacket gives Ryouya a more mature vibe, so I think it really works with this outfit.”

“Oh, then how about we add a pair of fake glasses to make him look more intellectual?”

“Glasses Ryouya might actually look good.”

After that, I continued playing dress-up for a while until Reona and Riona were fully satisfied. We tried all sorts of combinations, but it seemed like their favorite was the initial outfit: the jacket, summer knit, and skinny pants.

“Alright. Now that we’ve got a good look picked out, let’s buy everything.”

“I want you to wear the outfit we bought today for tomorrow’s birthday party.”

“Unfortunately, that’s not happening. I spent pretty much all my money on the pair rings earlier.”

Fifteen thousand yen was a huge expense for a second-year high school student like me, and now my wallet was practically empty—it was a pretty disheartening sight.

“Oh, don’t worry about that. Riona and I will pay for it.”

“No, seriously, I can’t let you do that. If you buy all this, it’s going to cost quite a bit.”

“We just want to buy it because we want to see Ryouya in these clothes. Don’t worry about it.”

“Just consider it a thank-you for the ridiculously extravagant birthday present you got us.”

After they said that much, I couldn’t bring myself to refuse, so I ended up letting them buy it for me. Lately, I really did feel like I was being gradually dyed in Reona and Riona’s colors. I had the sinking feeling they’d eventually entangle themselves in every part of my life.
