“…It’s already this late, huh?”
I woke up to the blaring alarm ringing throughout the room and groggily sat up in bed. I was terribly weak in the mornings, so this time of day always felt really depressing for me. After fixing my bedhead and changing out of my pajamas into my school uniform, I moved to the dining room and started eating the breakfast that had been prepared on the table.
At the same time, I opened up a mobile game app, collected the login bonus, and started grinding through a random dungeon. Spending the stamina that had fully recovered while I slept was part of my daily morning routine. Because I did this kind of thing every morning, I always ended up getting to school at the last minute. But it didn’t matter since I didn’t have any friends to chat with even if I showed up early.
By the way, my dad, mom, and Mio had already left for work and school, so at this hour, I was the only one still at home.
“Huh, so they’re doing a swimsuit gacha again this year. Well, summer break is coming up, after all.”
After grinding through the dungeon, I looked at the game’s announcement and was reminded that summer vacation was just around the corner. The normies would no doubt enjoy their fun summer vacations, but for a loner like me, it didn’t feel any different from any long weekend.
In fact, last year’s summer break had been pretty much the same as a regular weekend. There hadn’t been anything that felt particularly like a summer vacation for me. If I had to name something, it’d be the trip my family of four took to my grandma’s house in Kurashiki City, Okayama during Obon, and when Mio invited me to the local summer festival.
Of course, I also longed for a summer vacation where I’d go to the beach or the mountains with friends or watch fireworks with my girlfriend. But unfortunately, as a loner, that kind of life was beyond my reach. Only a privileged class—like Reona and Riona—got to have those picture-perfect, flashy summers you often saw on social media.
“Summer break this year probably won’t be any different either. I’ll just work through some homework while reading light novels and grinding in mobile games or something.”
As I made that gloomy comment to myself, I suddenly heard the sound of a key turning in the front door. Maybe Mio forgot something and came back to get it? No, if that were the case, she’d probably call me and ask me to bring it to her instead.
As I was thinking that, the dining room door opened, and Reona and Riona walked in.
“Good morning, Ryouya.”
“We came to pick you up.”
“Huh? Wait a second. Why do you two have the key to my house!?”
“That’s because right before we left yesterday, Ryouya’s Mama gave us a spare key.”
“Yeah, I told her we wanted to come pick Ryouya-kun up in the morning, and she said, ‘Go right ahead.’”
“…Oi, oi… Come on, Mom. You barely know them. How can you trust them that easily?”
I said to no one in particular. I wasn’t sure if Mom was just too easygoing or if Reona and Riona were just that impressive, but either way, they now had free access to come and go from my house as they pleased.
After that, the three of us walked to school together, side by side. Since they’d come all the way to pick me up, I couldn’t really say I wanted to go separately just to avoid standing out.
“Still, you two showed up at my house at just the right time. If you’d come any later, I probably wouldn’t have been there anymore.”
“…That’s a woman’s intuition for you.”
“Yeah. It’s just a coincidence…”
When I said that, both of them looked a little awkward for a brief moment and fell silent, but they quickly responded to my comment. Seeing that, I felt a gnawing sense of discomfort, but I was still pretty sleepy, so I didn’t think too hard about it.
“Ryouya, what was your ranking on the last midterm test?”
“Ugh, it’s kind of embarrassing to say…”
“Come on, I told you mine yesterday. You should tell me yours too, Ryouya-kun.”
Since I’d already heard Reona’s, it would’ve been pretty cowardly not to answer. Reluctantly, I swallowed my embarrassment and answered in a small voice.
“…Around 180th place.”
“Hmm. You look like such a serious student, but your rank is surprisingly low.”
“That’s why I didn’t want to say it.”
People often said I looked serious at first glance, so whenever they found out my grades weren’t great, they always reacted like this. Well, since Amaki High was a fairly prestigious school, my nationwide mock exam deviation score had never dropped below 50. But within the school, my results were honestly nothing to brag about.
“It’s okay. I’m on your side, Ryouya.”
“Yeah. With Riona around, you could even aim for the top of the class.”
“I’m glad to hear that…”
As we chatted and the conversation got livelier, I realized we were approaching the school gate.
Being near the school, there were a lot of other students walking to school just like us. And, just like yesterday, I could feel countless stares on me.
Obviously, that was because I was walking alongside Reona and Riona. I was getting those “Why is that guy with them?” kind of looks, and it felt seriously uncomfortable to be on the receiving end of those stares.
“…Sorry, I don’t think I can hold it. I’m going to go to the bathroom first.”
Unable to handle the pressure anymore, I blurted that out and dashed off toward the shoe lockers. Then I killed time in the bathroom until just before the bell for the first period rang.

Pre remake amd even now, I still don’t understand how 2 weeks of not going to school threw him so far behind. I’d have thought in remake they’d make it longer like a month at least for it to make sense.
If he was in the bottom half already and barely scraping by, it doesn’t seem especially unlikely that it’d be difficult to track without the connecting instruction. That being said, two weeks of missed classes shouldn’t have taken him from 180/300 down to 10% comprehension of the special test, unless that test was designed specifically to show how much he needs the special tutoring and how they’re indispensable, which seems likely based on the 80% result for the 30/300 student.
Basically, they’re gaslighting him. He had a hard first day back, and they made sure that he knows he’ll fail without them.
I think thats just how japanese schools are. If you miss a day you could fall behind by a good bit.
