ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
After that, I attended the first period like usual, but the moment break time started, Reona came over to talk to me. The same thing happened during the break after the second period.
“…Somehow, the atmosphere in class feels seriously uncomfortable.”
Now, during the break before fourth period, I had taken refuge in the vending machine area because I couldn’t bear to stay in the classroom. The reason was simple. The stares from my classmates were too much to bear.
“…Honestly, I kind of expected this to happen after standing out so much yesterday, but now that it’s actually happening, it’s… Pretty rough to bear.”
Up until now, I’d only ever been a background character. I was nothing but Background Character B and now, I was suddenly interacting with Reona, the idol-like girl of the class. She was hanging out with me instead of the usual popular kids. Of course this interaction was going to draw unwanted attention.
The reason I got involved with Reona and Riona in the first place was because of the slasher incident, but hardly anyone knew that backstory. So to everyone else, it must’ve looked like I suddenly got close to them out of nowhere.
“….I keep hearing people talk behind my back too. I really wish there was something I could do about this.”
For the record, the ones badmouthing me were mostly the guys who, to put it bluntly, didn’t really stand out much themselves. They were probably irritated that someone they saw as beneath them was suddenly getting along with the class idol.
In that sense, the popular kids were, in a way, nicer about it. Well, maybe they just didn’t even register my existence in the first place.
Thinking about all that, I waited until the last possible moment before heading back to class for fourth period. The second I stepped inside, someone told me not to bother Tsurugi-san by hovering around her.
So that’s how people are seeing this, huh?
Fourth period came and went, and then it was lunchtime—but that heavy feeling in my chest hadn’t gone away.
“Say… Am I being a bother when I’m around you…?”
Just like yesterday, the two of them came barging into my usual spot, and that was what I asked them. Reona and Riona both looked surprised and opened their mouths in surprise.
“Huh? Where did that question come from all of a sudden?”
“Ryouya , did something happen?”
“No, it’s just.. I just started wondering if maybe you two felt that way about me.”
They asked for a reason, so I told them. That comment I heard before fourth period was still swirling in my head. As soon as I said that, the smile on their faces suddenly vanished, replaced with a blank seriousness.
“Me and Riona think you’re a bother? No way. You’re our savior, the one who risked his life to protect us. There’s no way we’d ever see you as a nuisance. Riona and I are spending time with you because we want to. Honestly, there’s zero chance we’d find you annoying. If anything, we’re more worried that we’re the ones being a burden. Also, Ryouya -kun, you’re way more attractive than you give yourself credit for, so I think it’s totally okay for you to be more confident in yourself. If you do, you probably wouldn’t even be thinking that you were being a bother in the first place…”
“There’s no way we’d think that being with you is a nuisance. Both Onee-chan and I trust you from the bottom of our hearts. You saved our lives, Ryouya . Thinking you’re a bother would be completely messed up on our part. You might not realize it yourself, but what you did was something amazing. If you hadn’t been there that day, we might be dead right now. Honestly, we can’t thank you enough. From now on, we plan to spend our whole lives repaying you together. So you better be ready for that.”
Reona and Riona started speaking super fast as they said all of that. Honestly, it was a little—no, it was downright terrifying. But at the same time, I felt relieved upon knowing just how much they trusted me.
“…Okay. I get how you two feel now. Looks like I really was just overthinking it.”
I couldn’t think of their words as anything but the truth. And if it somehow wasn’t the truth, then Reona and Riona were definitely talented enough to be top-tier con artists.
“Well then, now that’s settled, let’s eat lunch.”
“We worked hard on it together again this morning, just like yesterday.”
“Thanks. As usual, the bento looks really delicious.”
This was only the second time I’d had lunch made by Reona and Riona, but I already couldn’t wait to dig in. Maybe they were already starting to win over my stomach.
Today’s bento had sausages, boiled eggs, ginger pork, cherry tomatoes, and white rice. The ketchup on the sausages had a slightly metallic taste to it, but everything else was insanely good. Naturally, my chopsticks didn’t stop moving as I ate.
Lunchtime ended, and the afternoon classes began—but luckily, no trouble broke out. Some people were still whispering about me behind my back, but I just ignored all of it.
I’d been feeling a little down all morning, worried that Reona and Riona might secretly see me as a nuisance—but now that I’d heard their honest feelings, any emotional damage I had suffered from was basically down to zero.

Surely that metallic taste was not wrought by blood, right?…
I Assure You It Was Man… Only Question Now Is Where It Came From An Whats The Point In It Doesn’t Make Sense Honestly.
