ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
After getting dragged into Riona’s scavenger hunt event, some time had passed, and before I knew it, it was nearly lunchtime. As for me, the next event was finally the three-legged race, so I had come to the edge of the field with Reona to do our warm-up exercises.
“It’s finally the real deal, huh?”
“Now that it’s time for the real thing, I’m actually kind of nervous.”
“Then how about this time, you try writing the kanji for ‘person’ three times on your hand and swallowing it?”
“I don’t think that’s going to work, so I’ll pass.”
“What? I totally think it’s super effective though.”
Reona said almost the exact same thing she’d said yesterday before the play, and just like then, her expression looked completely serious—like she truly believed it would work. After finishing our stretches while thinking about that, we began our final practice before the main event.
“Feels like we’re totally good to go.”
“Of course we are—because it’s me and you, Ryouya-kun!”
Reona declared that with a smug grin, and to be fair, we really were perfectly in sync. No—more precisely, it was probably that Reona was perfectly matching my movements and adjusting her timing so we stayed in sync. Matching someone else’s movements got to be insanely difficult, but Reona did it effortlessly, like it was nothing. She was amazing indeed. She must be born talented. After all, I doubt I could ever match someone else’s rhythm the way Reona did no matter how much I practiced.
“Alright, the event’s about to start, so let’s head over to the waiting area.”
“Yeah! Let’s show everyone our unbeatable coordination!”
A short while later, we arrived at the starting line for the three-legged race, guided there by the judge. At the sound of the starting pistol, we began running, timed with Reona’s “Ready, go!”
Since the three-legged race was a class competition, there were eight pairs on the field including us. And right now, Reona and I were in the lead, pulling ahead of everyone else. It wasn’t like the other teams were slow or anything—we were just fast. At this pace, we’d easily reach the goal in first place, as long as nothing unexpected happened.
But just as we were about three-quarters through the course and the goal was nearly in sight, that exact kind of unexpected incident happened. Out of nowhere, Reona tripped on something and nearly fell.
“Watch out!?”
As Reona lost her balance and looked about to fall hard, I instinctively moved to her side and caught her in my arms, shielding her. I managed to prevent her from getting hurt, but the awkward position put too much strain on the tying cord, and it came undone. While we were stuck dealing with that, the other teams started passing us one by one. Even if we retied the cord and restarted, we’d no doubt end up in last place.
“I’m sorry, Ryouya-kun. The cord came undone because of me…”
“Don’t worry about it. Stuff like this happens. Things not going smoothly is just part of life, like my whole life, really.”
I didn’t know what the right words were to say in a moment like this, so I just fell back on my usual tone to encourage her. Reona had looked pretty apologetic, but now her face lit up again.
“You’re so like yourself, even at a time like this. But thank you. Let’s show everyone that we’re not giving up and that we’ll push through to the end!”
“Yeah. Let’s stay calm this time and make sure we don’t fall again.”
“Right! Then just like before—ready, go!”
Once we finished tying the cord, we started running again at Reona’s signal. The other teams had already crossed the finish line, so we were the only ones left running on the field. If I had been alone, I probably would’ve felt miserable. But being with Reona kept that feeling away.
From the stands, we could hear lots of voices cheering us on, shouting “You can do it!” All the spectators were focused on us now, so yeah, it was a little embarrassing.
Well, I’ve gotten more used to being the center of attention, thanks to spending time with girls like Reona and Riona who always stand out.
This time, nothing else happened, and we reached the finish line without incident—greeted by a round of thunderous applause from the other students.

Chapter 119: Yeah, I Don’t Think I Can Wait Much Longer
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
After the three-legged race ended and we were heading back to the stands, Riona came up and spoke to me. She looked like she wanted to ask something—and I could probably guess what it was.
“Onee-chan, you fell on purpose during the three-legged race, didn’t you?”
“Ah. I knew you’d figure it out, Riona.”
“I can sort of tell what kinds of things you’d come up with.”
Even though I’d been extremely careful to make it look natural, it seemed Riona had seen right through me. As expected of my twin sister, who had been with me since the day we were born.
Just like Riona said, I had deliberately lost my balance during the race. I wanted to create a touching moment as the final act before the after-festival. Of course, part of it was also so I could be held by Ryouya-kun in front of everyone.
From our conversation this morning, I had already confirmed that if I looked like I was about to fall, Ryouya-kun would definitely catch me. That was why I could carry my plan out with confidence. Everything had gone exactly as I planned, and needless to say, I was doing a massive fist pump in my heart.
“These days, people are starting to accept the fact that Ryouya-kun is with us, huh? That’s a good sign, right?”
“That’s why we’ve been carefully taking our time, closing off all the escape routes.”
“Yeah, it’s a huge difference from how things were at the beginning.”
By now, it was almost becoming natural for Ryouya-kun to be with us, so it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say his position had been secured. At this point, even if we made Ryouya-kun ours, there probably wouldn’t be any major fallout.
The groundwork was nearly complete, so we planned to move on to the next step at tonight’s after-festival. It would be a huge step toward our ultimate goal—making Ryouya-kun ours and ours alone.
There were still plenty of things to be concerned about, but we could deal with those little by little later on. In any case, one thing was certain: tonight, the relationship between us sisters and Ryouya-kun would change for good.
“I can’t wait for the after-festival. I wish night would come already.”
“Yeah, I don’t think I can wait much longer.”
Riona had a look on her face that she definitely couldn’t show anyone else. I was probably wearing the exact same expression as hers.
