ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
The athletic events that had been going on since the morning finally came to an end, and now, the final event of this year’s school festival—the after-party—was about to begin. Unlike the athletic events earlier, participation in the after-party was optional, so a certain number of students were heading home. However, judging by the number of people still on campus, it seemed overwhelmingly more had chosen to stay.
As for me, I was currently being firmly escorted to the gymnasium, sandwiched between Reona and Riona on both sides.
“We really can’t let our guard down. Look at you, trying to sneak off without a word.”
“Since Ryouya tried to break his promise, I believe we need to punish him.”
“I’ve said it like a dozen times already, but this is a misunderstanding. I was just going to buy a drink!”
“Really? That sounds kinda suspicious to me.”
“The moment you tried to leave without saying anything to us, you were already guilty.”
“I admit that part was bad, but it wasn’t on purpose!”
Right. I wasn’t trying to run away. I just ran out of the drink I’d been sipping during the athletic events, so after the closing ceremony, I went to head over to the vending machines. That action had apparently been interpreted as an attempted escape, leading to the current situation. Honestly, I figured trying to run would be pointless anyway, and it seemed that assumption had been correct.
“If you try to escape again… Be prepared. Even I don’t know what we will do to you.”
“You better be prepared next time.”
“F-Fine, just don’t look at me like that, both of you!”
I couldn’t handle the way they were looking at me—like a pair of wild beasts eyeing their prey—and I cried out in desperation. If I really had tried to run, who knew what they would’ve done to me.
“…So, the first part’s happening in the gym, right?”
“Yeah, yeah. Part one is in the gym, and from part two we move out to the schoolyard.”
Reona answered cheerfully, clearly in high spirits, but… Was she really going to participate in the confession festival? I’d been meaning to ask that question a few times already, but I still hadn’t managed to get the question out of my heart.
“Hey, Reona…”
“Hmm? What is it?”
“…No, never mind. Forget it.”
Once again, the words rose to my throat but didn’t come out. I just couldn’t work up the courage to ask. I had been brave enough to protect Reona and Riona from that random attacker, so why couldn’t I summon the courage for something like this?
“There’s already a crazy crowd here, and it hasn’t even started yet.”
“Everyone was really looking forward to the after-party, so of course.”
“Let’s try and get up front where we can see the stage better.”
“Hate to break it to you, but the front’s already packed. It’s probably impossible for us to get there.”
“No worries—I asked a friend to save us spots, so we’re good.”
Ah, so they had it all covered. With friends like theirs, Reona and Riona could really make things happen when it counted. I was honestly jealous. Me? If I forgot my textbook or gym uniform, there was usually no one I could borrow from, which could easily turn into a disaster.
Thinking about that, I continued to be escorted by Reona and Riona as we made our way through the gymnasium. On the stage, I caught sight of the light music club setting up their instruments.
Oh right, the first part of the after-party started with a performance by the light music club’s band. Everyone on stage looked like the type to be basking in the glory of youth. If I was Background Character B, they were without a doubt the main characters. I was sure they’d be dancing around a campfire with their lovers during the second part, and after the after-party ended, they’d be off indulging in some morally questionable boy-girl activities. Meanwhile, I only had my right hand for company—how utterly infuriating.
“I wish all the normies here would just explode at once.”
“Whoa, what’s with that all of a sudden?”
“I’m just lamenting the unfairness of the world.”
“That’s so like you, Ryouya.”
Reona and Riona gave me exasperated looks when they heard my comment.
Will the day ever come when I finally have my own springtime of youth?

Chapter 121: I’ll Take Responsibility, so Please Don’t Push Me Any Further
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
After that, some time had passed since the after-festival began, and the end of the first part was drawing near. The first part had been lively, with performances by the light music club’s band, a karaoke competition, manzai comedy acts, and more—but the final event, the confession festival, was about to begin.
“Alright then, Ryouya-kun, shall we go?”
“…Huh? Go where?”
“You’ll see once we get there.”
“I’ll be watching over you two brave souls from here.”
“Hold on a second—what the hell is about to start!?”
It all happened so suddenly that my brain couldn’t keep up at all, but Reona didn’t care one bit and grabbed my hand. She dragged me off, and before I knew it, we were backstage at the gymnasium. There, I saw a group of clearly extroverted boys and girls—none of them the gloomy, forgettable type like me. To be honest, I was obviously the odd one out.
“Are entry numbers nine, Reona Tsurugi-san, and ten, Ryouya Yagami-san, present?”
“Yes, both of us are here.”
“Great. We’ll be starting soon, so please get ready.”
“W-Wait a minute. What do you mean by ‘entry number’…?”
“Huh? Of course, I mean for the confession festival.”
When I asked one of the student council members who was directing things backstage, that was what they told me. No, no, wait—I have no memory of entering anything! I thought the rule was that participants in after-festival events had to apply in advance.
“He’s probably just a little nervous before the main event, so please give him some space.”
Reona said that to the puzzled-looking student council member.
But seriously, why the hell is my name entered? I don’t remember filling out any forms or anything.
When I glanced at Reona, lost in confusion, I saw her with a satisfied smirk on her face.
Ah. No doubt about it—I’ve been completely set up by Reona. Wait, seriously, what am I supposed to do? I’ve got nothing to confess!
I fell into full-blown panic, but before I could even start thinking of running away, I was ushered onto the stage.
“Alright, it’s that time again! The annual confession festival! How will things unfold this year? Let’s go in order of entry numbers!”
With that overly enthusiastic MC announcement, the confession festival kicked off. One by one, the participants on stage began confessing after some introductory small talk. Some confessions succeeded and were met with thunderous applause, while others failed and got words of comfort from the MC—but I didn’t have the luxury of paying attention to any of that.
I couldn’t picture any way to survive this situation. My mind was completely blank. And before I knew it, it was me and Reona’s turn.
“Entry number nine, Reona Tsurugi.”
When Reona declared that in a loud, clear voice, the crowd erupted in cheers. Then, once things quieted down, she began saying something outrageous.
“You know, there’s this guy who didn’t stop at just seeing me naked or sleeping in the same bed. He even stole my first kiss and still won’t take responsibility.”
The moment she said that, the gymnasium broke out in chaos.
And I mean, come on, the guy who won’t take responsibility over everything she just mentioned is obviously me.
I knew what she was talking about. Every single bit of it.
“So, with that in mind, I’ve decided that entry number ten, Ryouya Yagami-kun, will take responsibility by dating me. But of course, I won’t force him, so I’ll leave the final decision to him.”
Saying that, Reona handed the microphone to me. And then all the spotlights in the gym that had been focused on Reona suddenly turned to me. She said it wasn’t mandatory, but if I rejected Reona’s confession now, I’d instantly become the jerk who saw her naked, stole her first kiss, and refused to take responsibility.
There was absolutely no way I could choose to reject her confession. And what made things worse was that I was standing on stage in front of everyone. No matter which answer I gave, everyone in the gym would become a witness. Maybe if I hadn’t been on stage, I could’ve wriggled out of it somehow—but being here meant it was already too late. In other words, I was completely checkmated.
There’s no point resisting anymore.
“…Alright. I’ll take responsibility, so please don’t push me any further…”
“So with that, starting today, Ryouya-kun and I are officially a couple—so everyone, please treat us well!”
As she said that, Reona wore a smile more radiant than I had ever seen before. And the gymnasium was filled with an explosive wave of excitement.
What the hell’s going to happen to me from here on out?
