ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
After a while, we arrived at the bookstore and each of us started looking at the books we liked. Riona stopped at the new releases section for general literature, while I headed toward the corner where light novels and manga were displayed. And soon enough, I found the light novel I was looking for. I picked it up, and continued browsing other books. That was when a particular title caught my eye and made me stop in my tracks.
“I didn’t know this one had been adapted into a manga.”
The manga I picked up was a comic version of a hugely popular light novel about a protagonist who faces off against supernatural phenomena—it had become a massive hit not long ago and was even adapted into an anime. Lately, it seemed that popular web novel submissions often got published and turned into manga simultaneously, but apparently, it wasn’t like that in the past.
I had read the light novel and watched the anime version, so I wanted to complete the manga adaptation as well. That said, it looked like it had only been released recently, with just two volumes out so far. As I was thinking about that, Riona came over holding a paperback book.
“So this is where you were.”
“How’d you know I’m here?”
“There are only so many places Ryouya could be.”
“Hey now, there’s always a chance I might be in the reference book section.”
“That’s about as likely as snow falling in the middle of summer.”
Riona teased me with her usual cool expression. Just like Reona, Riona really loved messing with me.
“What are you planning to buy, Riona?”
“This.”
“February 29, huh? Isn’t that the one that has a movie out now?”
“Yeah, it’s the novel version of that.”
If I recalled correctly, this was a story based on a heartbreak song of the same name about an unattainable love. The popular kids in class had gone to see the movie and were talking about how they cried in the middle of it, but I hadn’t seen it. I wasn’t interested in live-action films, so unless it got an anime adaptation, I probably wouldn’t watch it.
“So even you read novels like that, huh?”
“Surprised?”
“Yeah. I could totally see Reona reading something like that, but I never pictured you reading those kinds of stories.”
“I’ve always liked novels. Not just romance, but I read a wide range of genres—mystery, sci-fi, stuff like that too.”
“Wow, you really do read all kinds of things.”
Now that I think about it, Riona surprisingly knows a lot about anime and manga too, so maybe she just likes stories in general.
I used to have this totally biased image of her being the type to read only academic books that looked way harder than novels, but I guess I should revise those assumptions I had of her.
“Anyway, I’ve decided on what I want to buy, so shall we check out and head home?”
“I feel like there’s still one place you haven’t gone yet. Are you sure it’s okay to head back like this?”
“Is there somewhere else I’d go?”
“Over there.”
As she said that, Riona pointed her finger. Wondering where she meant, I looked in that direction and saw a section partitioned off with a curtain, its interior hidden from view. Yep, no matter how you looked at it, that was clearly the adult section.
“Hey hey, what do you think I am?”
“A healthy teenage boy. That’s what you are, right, Ryouya?”
“Well, I am a healthy teenage boy, but still…”
Could it be that, in Riona’s mind, a healthy teenage boy is someone who proudly walks into the adult section while still in his school uniform? If that’s the case, I really think she needs to reconsider her understanding of what a “normal teenage boy” looks like.
“By the way, if you had gone in there, there would’ve been a punishment.”
“A punishment?! That’s terrifying. I mean, I wasn’t planning on going in anyway.”
Unlike regular manga, I always buy erotic manga in digital format. After that painful experience when Reona and Riona found my stash during a sleepover at my place, I stopped buying physical copies entirely.
“I’ll trust you just this once, Ryouya.”
“It’s not a matter of trusting me or not. I really didn’t plan on going in there.”
Honestly, if Riona hadn’t brought it up, I wouldn’t have even thought about the adult section. At this point, it felt like she was just trying to set me up.
“Okay then, we’ve both taken care of what we came for. Let’s head back to your place, Ryouya.”
“Ah, so you were planning to come to my place today too, huh?”
“Of course. Ryouya’s house is like my second home.”
Reona also said that she was looking forward to eating Mio’s gratin, so yeah, the two of them really were always hanging out at my house. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if they ended up living there someday and what scared me even more was that even if that did happen, I had a feeling my dad, mom and Mio would just accept that fact like it was something completely normal to them.

Chapter 107: The Bond Between Me and Onee-Chan Is Eternal and Unbreakable
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
After arriving home, Riona and I did the housework together, and afterward, we each spent time doing what we liked. At this point, I didn’t even feel like commenting on how naturally Riona had made herself comfortable lying on my bed reading a book.
How can she be so defenseless in a guy’s room?
If I were the type of bad guy who couldn’t control himself, this would’ve already turned into a complete disaster.
“Ryouya, are you doing okay with the play and the three-legged race?”
“I kept getting torn apart by the director’s acting critiques, but I guess I finally got over my embarrassment or something. In fact, I’ve actually been getting praised lately. As for the three-legged race, it’s going okay, I think.”
“That’s a relief. I’m looking forward to the day of the event.”
“Yeah, I’ll do my best not to embarrass Reona.”
Since we were in different classes, Riona hadn’t seen much of our practice, so it was understandable that she’d be curious. The event was just a week away, and I planned to give it my all during the remaining practice sessions.
“By the way, are you and Reona doing anything for the after-party?”
“I don’t have any particular plans. You probably already know this, Ryouya, but I’m not the kind of person who likes being in the spotlight.”
Curious about the rumors surrounding the confession festival, I tried to probe, but that was the answer I got from Riona. And it was true—I couldn’t imagine Riona doing something on stage. Even for the class play, she preferred to work backstage rather than performing.
“But as for Onee-chan… I’m not so sure.”
“…Huh, really?”
“She told her friends she wanted to do something that would surprise everyone. But I don’t know exactly what she meant by that.”
I had hoped to confirm whether the confession festival rumors were just a hoax, but hearing Riona say that only made it seem more credible. No, maybe Reona’s words just got exaggerated as they spread. Like in a game of telephone, things often get distorted the further they go. Which only made things more confusing. Asking her directly would be the most reliable way, but I didn’t have the guts for that. That was why I was trying to get information from Riona instead.
“What about you, Ryouya? Are you planning to do anything for the after-party?”
“Of course not. There’s no way I’d be part of that.”
“I totally thought you would.”
“No, no. Watching is one thing, but going up on stage and doing something? That’s literally the last thing I’d ever do.”
The people who got up on stage at the after-party were always the cheerful, popular types who were the center of their class. There was no way a background character like me—introverted and low-profile—could possibly blend into that. If I were the kind of person who could pull that off, I wouldn’t be a loner in the first place.
After a while, the door to my room opened and Reona came in.
“Hey, I’m home.”
“Welcome back, Onee-chan.”
“You know, what shocks me is how natural that all sounded.”
Reona and Riona weren’t even residents of this house, so saying “I’m home” or “welcome back” should’ve felt weird, but somehow it didn’t at all. It was a complete mystery indeed. Spending time with them had dulled my sense of normal. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if one day I stopped noticing things that were clearly strange to others.
“Did you behave yourself while I was gone, Ryouya-kun?”
“Well… We stopped by a bookstore on the way back, and Ryouya showed interest in the adult book section, so I wouldn’t exactly say he behaved.”
“Oh really? Now I want to hear more about that in detail.”
“Come on, don’t just casually lie like that. I wasn’t even thinking about the adult section until Riona pointed it out.”
I pushed back, not wanting to fall into the trap Riona had set. With her cool expression, no one would suspect that she was secretly this sadistic.
“Hmm, I’d love to trust Ryouya-kun, but I can’t imagine Riona lying to me, so… Guilty, I guess.”
“The bond between me and Onee-chan is eternal and unbreakable.”
“That’s way too unfair.”
If that logic worked, Riona could frame me for anything she wanted. While we were going back and forth like that, Mio showed up in the room wearing an apron.
“Sorry to keep you waiting! Dinner’s ready!”
“Yay! I’m starving, I can’t wait.”
“Thank you as always, Mio-chan.”
“You’re welcome. Reona-san and Riona-san are like sisters to me, after all.”
The three of them walked off toward the dining room, looking like they were having a great time. Seeing them like this, it really did feel like Mio could be their sister. Well, in Mio’s case, she inherited Mom’s well-defined facial features, so she didn’t look out of place at all when she stood next to Reona and Riona. That probably helped sell the illusion. As for me, I took after Dad, who was average in literally every category—plus or minus five points—so my appearance was as plain as it gets.
In the end, Reona and Riona stayed for a leisurely dinner. They chatted with Mom as usual, and only after I walked them home did they finally leave.
