ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
After making the rounds of the middle school classrooms and helping Reona with her class leader duty while also practicing for the play, I was completely exhausted by the time everything was over.
“…Finally, we can go home.”
“Today was tiring too.”
“Yeah, especially after what happened after classes.”
During the school festival prep period, classes were shortened significantly, but even so, balancing both was still pretty tough. And those who were in clubs even had activities after classes and festival preparation. To be honest, I really thought they were amazing.
Someone like me, who wants to go home a second faster if possible, could never manage that.
As I was thinking about that and getting ready to leave, a third-year senpai who served as our team leader came into the classroom and walked straight toward us. Reona noticed and spoke up.
“Oh? What’s going on?”
“Hey, Tsurugi-san. Actually, I wanted to have a quick meeting with you and the class leaders from the first and second years. I know it’s a bit sudden, but do you think you could join us?”
“Got it. Looks like it might take a while, so Ryouya-kun, head home with Riona first.”
Finishing her sentence, Reona left the classroom with the senpai. Watching them, one of our female classmates suddenly started chatting excitedly.
“Could that Senpai be the one Reona-chan is rumored to be into?”
“Hmm, I wonder? It might be someone else though.”
“Hey, what rumor are you talking about?”
Even though I knew it wasn’t a good idea, I couldn’t help but eavesdrop on the girls’ conversation out of curiosity.
“Actually, there’s been a rumor going around the past few days that Reona-chan is going to confess to someone during the confession event at the closing festival.”
“Yeah, and it’s funny because there are a few guys who seriously think they’re the one.”
“Ohhh! So that’s why some guys have been acting weird lately.”
Since Reona was the only person in class I could really talk to, I had no idea a rumor like that had been spreading around. I figured it was just baseless gossip, but part of me couldn’t stop thinking about it. And the fact that the class leader senpai was actually pretty good-looking made me feel even more unsettled.
Still, I couldn’t just leave Riona waiting, so I headed to the shoe lockers.
“Sorry to keep you waiting.”
“Onee-chan isn’t with you?”
“Reona has a class leader meeting. She told us to go on ahead.”
“Got it. Then let’s do that.”
Riona and I started walking home together. Now that I thought about it, this was actually the first time we’d gone home just the two of us, which felt kind of refreshing.
“I want to stop by the bookstore on the way. Is that okay with you, Ryouya?”
“Yeah, I don’t mind at all.”
“Thanks. Let’s go together then.”
We decided to take a detour, but I didn’t mind since there was a light novel I wanted to buy anyway. After that, we headed toward a bookstore on the way home.
“How’s your class doing with the school festival prep, Riona?”
“Smoothly. Our class leader planned everything well, so it’s going according to schedule.”
“Yeah, having someone competent in that role really makes a huge difference.”
The capability of whoever’s in charge really is crucial.
I had no confidence in my ability to manage a class, so I genuinely respected my classmates who were class leaders. Except for that one guy who volunteered as a joke last year and made the whole class atmosphere miserable. I couldn’t respect him in the slightest.
“How about your class, Ryouya?”
“Our class is doing fine too, thanks to Reona.”
“Well, this is Onee-chan we’re talking about. Of course the preparation is going smoothly.”
Riona’s expression remained as cool as always, but she looked a little pleased. At first, I couldn’t really read Riona’s expressions at all, but lately, I’d started to get a better sense of her feelings. It hadn’t even been six months since I got involved with Reona and Riona, but the time we’d spent together was so intense that it felt like we had been together for much longer.
Maybe that was why, even though I knew I was out of my depth, I’d ended up falling for both of them. Which was exactly why that rumor about the confession event kept bothering me.
“Ryouya, you seem a little down today. Did something happen?”
“It’s just that I’m worn out from classes and festival preparation. Don’t worry about it.”
I gave her a vague answer since she’d noticed the shift in my mood. I didn’t think I could talk to Riona about this whole feeling of unease. After all, Reona and Riona had once said that if they fell in love, they would date that person together. Which meant, if Reona dated someone, Riona would date that person too.
“I see. But if anything ever bothers you, I’ll always be here to help you. Just say the word.”
“Thanks. I’ll count on you when the time comes.”
I was still feeling a bit unsettled, but Riona’s words lifted my spirits a little, and I decided to change my mindset for now. After all, there was no point dwelling forever on a rumor that had no credibility.
