While thinking about all that, the moment I stepped through the connecting passage into the middle school building, the number of stares I received suddenly skyrocketed. The high school and middle school uniforms had different designs, making it easy to tell which division someone belonged to at a glance. These stares were surely because it was unusual for high schoolers like us to be here.
“We’re seriously getting stared at.”
“Yeah, and the hostile glares aimed at me are part of the usual set.”
Whenever I moved around with Reona and Riona, I always got these looks for being the unwanted third wheel. By now, I’d gotten used to it. And as usual, Reona kept a composed face even as she was showered with the sticky gazes of lustful middle school boys. While I was thinking about that, I saw a familiar face walking toward us from down the hallway.
“Huh? Onii-chan and Reona-san?”
“Ah, Mio-chan! Hey there!”
“What a coincidence to run into you two here.”
“No, no, that’s my line. I mean, I get Reona-san being here, but what’s Onii-chan doing here? Here I thought Onii-chan would never set foot in the middle school building again.”
Mio casually took a verbal jab at me. Well, yeah, I honestly thought I’d never come back to the middle school building at least until Mio’s graduation either.
“I don’t know what his goal is, but when I saw Ryouya-kun heading toward the middle school building with bloodshot eyes, I figured I should keep an eye on him just in case something went wrong.”
“Thank you. I’d hate to have a criminal come out of the family, so you’re really helping us here.”
“Reona, that was a ridiculously bold lie to tell so nonchalantly like that. And Mio, don’t believe it so easily. I’m just helping out with the class leader duties for the school festival, that’s all.”
“We’re just kidding. Anyone could tell that just by looking at those fan uchiwas you and Reona-san are holding.”
“These are just a means of communication, like saying hello.”
“Don’t try to humiliate me under the pretense of saying hello…”
Just like always, they’re really getting along well together.
At first, Mio had been nervous and referred to Reona and Riona as senpai, but before I knew it, she’d switched to using -san, and the distance between them had almost disappeared. Lately, she’d even started calling Reona “Onee-chan” behind her back, so this level of familiarity made sense.
“By the way, Mio-chan, how’s your class doing with the school festival preparation?”
“It’s going well, I think. Both our mock store preparations and the cheering flag we’re making are coming along great without any problems.”
“That’s great. If that kind of stuff doesn’t go well, the class atmosphere can turn awful really fast.”
In my class last year, our class leader had been a hyper extrovert who volunteered purely on impulse and good vibes, with zero planning ability. Our progress was noticeably slower than other classes. On top of that, they barely reported on anything, so in the end, the third-year team leader blew up when they realized how little had been done, and only then did things finally start moving. It was a mess. Compared to the first half of the preparation period, the second half was so tense it wasn’t even funny.
“On the flip side, how are things going with your class and Reona-san’s?”
“Our class is going pretty smoothly too. All the things we need to make are on schedule, and everyone’s doing well with practice for both the play and the athletic events.”
“Yeah, seriously. Reona is amazing as class leader.”
Reona had been managing the entire schedule, supporting everyone around her, and keeping up with her own practice. Thanks to that, there hadn’t been any real problems with our class. I honestly respected her for doing something I couldn’t hope to replicate.
“Looks like you’re finally realizing how capable I am, Ryouya-kun.”
“If you’d stop using your class leader privileges to boss me around, I’d be even more impressed.”
“Here I was feeling good about what you said, but that one line ruined it all.”
“Onii-chan, you’re still the same as ever.”
Reona and Mio both gave me a heavy, exasperated stare.
Looks like I put my foot in my mouth again, but hey, that’s just the kind of person I am. Please forgive me.
“Well, now that I’ve gotten my fill of Mio-chan energy, we should get going.”
“Sure. See you after school. Oh, and we’re having gratin for dinner tonight, so look forward to it.”
“Yay! I’m really looking forward to it.”
“Later.”
After parting ways with Mio, we resumed walking toward our destination classroom to hand out the cheering uchiwas. I didn’t even bother pointing out how naturally she assumed she’d be eating dinner at my house again today.
“Oh right. Even after we’re done handing out these uchiwas, I’ve still got a lot of things I need your help with, so thanks in advance.”
“There’s more?”
“Class leaders are super busy, you know. I need all the help I can get from you, Ryouya-kun.”
“Wouldn’t it be fine to just ask another classmate instead of me?”
“That’s not gonna work. If I take my eyes off you and something irreversible happens, it’ll be a disaster. I need you where I can see you.”
“What am I, a toddler…?”
I’m a high school student too, you know. I really don’t think I’m the type to cause any kind of major disaster, so what on earth is Reona so worried about?
