- 03: On the Odd Job
As the morning came, as early as the sun was rising, at that time, the sound of chopping wood was already echoing the grounds near the kitchen on the mansion of the Starfall Nobles.
Here, in this time, as what I would usually do every morning that came was to assist in anyway possible to the household.
In the past when the orphanage wasn’t yet burned down, I was the one who would deal with the cooking and the preparation for the day.
Now, in this mansion, since the maids were just as an early riser as I was, I simply helped out in different means.
Seeing as how they had a stack of uncut wood piled in a corner, I decided to do this thing first.
“Oh my, looks like your doing a fantastic job at that lad.” said a woman who came by while carrying a basket filled with vegetables.
“Oh, good morning. I’m sorry…I’m with the kids in the barracks. I hope you don’t mind me helping out.” I said as I stopped chopping wood.
“I know dear, I heard about what happened in the orphanage yesterday. It must have been hard to have your home be burned by those demons.” said woman.
“My name is Abel.” I said as I went and approached her with a handshake.
“My name is Gladice, I’m the one of them maids who work for Sir Starfall.”
“You don’t mind me chopping down the wood right?” I asked.
“Oh no, not all. If anything, you are being a great help. Usually we just call one of the heavy boys to do this job, but since its still early in the morning, they are still out in the pub, drunk as hell.” said Gladice as she had this annoyed reaction on her face.
“Ah…is that so? Where can I put these chopped wood after I’m done cutting them?” I asked.
“Oh, I think the kitchen needs some dear, try to bring a bundle of them there after your done.”
“I will, thank you.”
As Gladice left me ot my own, I resumed chopping the wood.
After about 15 minutes later, I was finally out my way to the kitchen while carrying a bundle of chopped wood.
As I got there, I came to find two maids busily cooking in the kitchen.
“Um, Good morning, I’ll just put it right here.” I say as I dropped the wood near the other bundles of chopped wood.
And to my say, the two maids came to notice me.
“Hmm? And who is this fine young man? Asked one of the maids.”
“He’s Abel, he came with the other kids who are now staying in the barracks after the fire made yesterday in the orphanage.” said one of the maids who seem to have known my name.
“Abel? Ah..Abel, the boy who has the powers to heal.” said an older woman who was stirring the pot.
“You know me?” I asked.
“Yes yes, you once helped my husband with his back pain once in the market. That fool is always reckless when he trees to lift the heavy things with his back…I always say, lift things with your legs, not your back!” complained the old woman.
“I’m sorry, but I don’t remember…” I said as I tried to think back. But a lot of times, I do help out the people in the city once in a while if I came by a problem in need of my help.
“Ah, its no problem dear, I know you help a lot of the oldies in the streets and I’m sure you don’t have the time to remember our names, but we remember you. You were a very kind boy.” said the old woman as she smiled with thanks.
“Ah, thank you.”
“my name is Agnese by the way, and I’m sure that you and the other kids are excited about today’s breakfast. The lord said to make enough for your family, so please, in a few minutes, have them visit the dining room here. We can all eat together.” said Agnese with a sweet old smile.
“And I’m Katrina, hope you and the kids enjoy today’s breakfast.” said the other maid who was chopping some vegetables.
As I said my goodbyes to the Agnese and Katrina, I went by the barracks to visit the kids.
Seeing as how its still a bit early, I can expect them to be still asleep. But as I made it to the barracks, I saw Sister Mary and Sister Tiana simply watching over by the door.
As I waved my hands, they noticed me.
“Sister Mary, Sister Tiana, good morning.” I said.
“Good Morning Abel, an early riser as usual I see?” said Sister Tiana as she was holding a towel between her hands.
“Yeah, I can’t mess up my routine just because I’m not at home. Sister Mary, are you doing well? Or does your neck still ache?” I asked in worry.
“Its fine Abel, you’ve done a great job as usual with your gift. My neck is a bit stiff, but in time, It’ll heal.” said Sister Mary in her kind nature.
“Hmm, the redness does seem to have faded away…that seems like a good sign.” I said.
“Where did you come from Abel? Did you went to the Lord Loyd’s Kitchen?” asked Sister Tiana.
“I just went and chopped some wood for the kitchen to use. Miss Agnese, one of the maids who worked in the kitchen said that we should visit the worker’s dining hall once in a few minutes so that the children can eat.”
“Hmm, is that so? How kind of the Sir Loyd to offer his graces to us.” said Sister Tiana.
“I should wake up the kids, its breakfast soon and I don’t want to hear them crying early in the morning for having to miss breakfast.” I said as I tried to reach for the door. But in my action, I was stopped by Sister Mary.
“Um, Abel…how about you leave the kids to me and Sister Tiana. And you should go take a bath.” said Sister Mary.
“Huh? But…hmm, can I ask why?” I asked as I was a bit shocked by being stopped by sister Mary.
“Abel…you no longer have a responsibility to take care of the children. You said that you would become a mage…isn’t that what you said?” she asked as she reminded me of what I said yesterday.”
“it is…but-”
“Take Priority over what you want, and leave the kids to us. You’re an adult now…and if you keep on taking care of these children, you won’t be able to leave our home and grow by your own.”
“…That seems a bit selfish Sister Mary. I thought that you didn’t want me to leave the orphanage.”
“I didn’t want you to become an adventurer. They hurt themselves out of the risk of their jobs…but I can’t stop you…so I want you to go.”
Seeing as how defiant Sister Mary was with my actions, I felt somewhat pressured by her willingness to have me leave.
“…No.” but I said no.
“What?” in my according question, she was stunned.
“Abel, although we didn’t have the proper ceremony to have you leave us, you are obligated to leave.” said Sister Tiana.
“And I’m also obligated to do what I want, in my best interest. And what I want Sister Tiana, is to help my brothers and sisters in their time of need.”
“…”
“…”
“I’ll leave when I feel like everything has finally settled.” I said.
“…” as I said those words, I noticed Sister Mary have a small show of a teary expression. And in those tears, a smile was made…although it was more of a regretting smile, part of it felt like relief to Sister Mary.
A conflict of two emotions.
Regret and Relief.
“…Also, I can’t just leave like so. Sir Loyd called me last night and he gave me a job.”
“!?”
“really!?” asked Sister Tiana in a surprised tone.
“What kind of job?” she asked.
“I genuinely don’t know. But I’ll figure it out soon once I go to the location.” I said.
“Is the job dangerous? Is it hard?” asked Sister Mary in concern.
“I don’t know…but I’m sure I can handle it.” I said with my thumbs up and about.
“…Okay…I see. If sir Loyd was the one who gave you the job, we should trust his graces.” said Sister Mary.
“…Yes we should.”

About an hour later, as the kids finally had their breakfast and I was able to take a bath near the well of the mansion, I readied my things.”
I brought with me a knife, an axe, a rope, a sack, and a water bottle all inside a bag that I borrowed from the maids.
And so forth, I brought out my letter and read through the information given by Sir Loyd.
“Hmm, a pack of grizzly Gorillas are roaming in the forest and killing any wandering adventurers and is making their way to the city mines…the location isn’t where I would usually hunt, but that doesn’t really change anything.” I said as I put the letter away and I started running.
Putting on my hood from the cloak, I dashed through the forest.
[Haste Boost!]
***
Out in a forest somewhere, four Grizzly Gorillas were found slowly makign their way to the mines.
With the one distinctive Grizzly Gorilla who was leading this pack.
Brown skin, sharp claws, veinful arms, raging red eyes, and one distinctive weapon that seems to have resembled a club.
These Gorillas are very hostile against any form of deadly intent made their way.
A shout from a warrior can easily make them move in anger and if attacked, they will not back down…or so what I know based off of my experience fighting one.
Although they are rare in this forest, some do come by and try to find a cave to settle down once winter was slowly coming.
These Guys were about to hibernate if they make their way to the caves in the mines.
Because of their nomad-like nature, they never settle for one permanent home. So after Hibernation is finished, these Gorilla’s would usually just move on and leave the caves they would sleep in.
But that won’t happen.
If they were to make a place in the cave mines in the city, it’ll stop all operations in manning the resources.
By afternoon, if they keep walking at that pace….they should make it to the city, which would then lead to a major riot.
“…right, lets do this quick.”
[Reinforced Body]
The ability to strengthen one’s body in the physical sense.
[Enhanced Weapon]
The ability to strengthen the weapon’s power and durability.
By bringing out my axe, I started chopping the trees, or at least the upper half of it from above.
In just one full swing, the trees started falling from the sky like acorns.
One by one, they were able to hit down on the Girzzly Gorillas, but it wasn’t enough for it to take them down.
so having to cut one last tree, I joined it in its fall.
Falling down with the tree, I was able to hide my body out of all the chaos that was happening down below.
With my hands in the air, the moment I came down to one of the grizzly gorillas, I swung down so hard, that it was good enough to even split a boulder in half.
And in my contact, I was able to aim at the leader with a precise slice straight at its skull.
*Thuck!*
“Gotcha!”
In that swing with my axe, I was able to split the leader’s head in one blow.
No sounds of screching roars were made nor any sense of struggle.
It didn’t take long before it fell down dead and what was left were three Grizllies who felt the confusion and fear of having to have lost their leader.
In that moment, I pulled my axe back and put it in my bag. And there, I then picked up the gigantic club meant to be used by the gorillas. And to it, I leaped into the air, and I dived down with the club.
*BOOM!*
The entire area shook from the vibration of my attacks. Killing one who I struck in the same place, the head.
“Ugraaa!!” in the sudden chance that it was able to see me, one of the Gorillas came with their fist gripped with the capability to rip a tree in shreds.
It swungs its arms like a damn pile driver, yet in return, I countered its fist with the club.
*Thud!*
The moment our weapon’s meet, the club was instantly destroyed yet in return, the hand of the Gorilla was left bleeding from the countered force of my swing.
“…Hmph!” seeing my chance as the Gorilla struggled with its broken arm, I picked one of the thin and light trees I cut from above and I swung it by like a tall stick horizontally to the Gorilla.
*Whipik!* and in action to my whipping tall tree, I was able to add more pain to the struggling Gorilla. It caused him to hesitate as a swelling redness was glowing from his stomach. The target of my whipping tree.
And as I swung the tree again like a whip, in this second action, I felt the tree starting to break.
*Whipik!*
But it was enough to impale some damage to the Gorilla as I aimed for his head.
The contact from my whipping tree to his head simply left him staring at my face as his mind was entirely shooked by both the pain and the shaking of his brain when meeting the whipping tree.
Enough pain was made that it started to produce some saliva which then started getting foamy…a clear indication that it was nearing its death.
“…”
In this end, I was only left with one last Gorilla who by now was nowhere near my area.
“Hmm…It ran.” I sad to myself as I could se a trail of blood he left behind. Seeing as how I haven’t even directly attacked the last gorilla, must mean that he was either injured before hand or that he was injured from the falling trees.
Either way, I can’t let one go and escape…if he did, who knows what might happen. This Grizzly Gorilla’s were unpridectable in a sense.
As I followed the trail, I was lead to the edge of a mountain where I was meet with a typical scene of a wildlife development.
Four wolves came by as they cornered an injured Grizzly Gorilla who was up against the walls.
With his entire shoulder dislocated from the falling trees and his mouth and face left with some scratches from the wolves, the grizlly Gorilla was left with a predictable end.
‘Hmm, he won’t make it.’ I thought to myself as I hanged by on one of the trees like a monkey.
And soon enough, the wolves attacked as the Gorilla Screeched in both pain and desperation.
“Ugraahh!!”
“Ugraahh!”
Like a new born chimp, this thing was as helpless as it was born.
In then end, the Gorilla was left, lying as a corpse and so were the rest of the dead Gorillas in the forest.
To gather some evidence about this to show to Sir Loyd, was able to pick out one distinctive part of the Gorillas. Their red raging eyeballs.
Having to carve out all of the eyes from the ones I could get, I was able to gather 7 eyeballs. One was eaten by the wolves.
“Well, this should be enough.” I said as I quickly made my way home.
As I made my way back, I had to come by a wild boar to serve to the maids to have it prepared.
A couple of hours later, I was finally back at the mansion at around sundown.
As I put down the wild boar from my hunt, I had to call out to the mades, but as I did, by a sudden intrusion, two big-billied men came, carrying an axe and a large tree stump.
“…Hmm? And who is this?” asked the one who was carrying the axe.
“Hmm, he must be one of the kids who came to stay at the barracks.” said the one carrying a tree stump.
“…You must be the heavy boys?” I asked the two.
“That we are…and you are?” asked the one carrying the axe.
“Abel…Sir Loyd asked me to do a job, and I just came back from my hunt.” I said as I dropped the wild hog on the floor.
“I’ll be…if it isn’t a wild hog…so you must be a hired hunter.” asked one of the heavy boys who carried an axe.
“In a way…yes.”
“Well, I’ll give these to the Agnese, I’m sure she’ll cut them up right and well.” said the man carrying the stump as he picked up the hog with just one hand.
“Be on your way, Sir Loyd is by the training grounds. He’s sparring with a friend.” said the Heavy boy who carried an axe.
“Right.”
As I moved pass them with the 7 eyeballs from the gorillas in the bag, I made my way to the training grounds.
***
As I finally arrived, I saw that Sir Loyd was having a duel with a certain armored person from head to toe.
*Swish* *Swash*
The two were clearly master swordsmans with the way they handled themselves.
Each person came forward and parried, thrusted and ducked, all in a sense of battle of wits.
At some point, I simply watched as the fight continued non-stop for ten minutes more.
And at the end, the winner who came about was Sir Loyd.
“…You really haven’t rusted at all since you left the militia…its kind of sad that even to this day, I could not beat you.” said the man in armor.
“I never let my sword rest on any day…dear Brother. And unlike me, you have a more important part of battle. A more political stance.”
“That is true…the stress has made my body rust instead.” said the man in armor.
“Hmm, indeed….Hmm?” finally after conversing, Sir Loyd was able to notice me.
“Abel, you’ve returned already?” asked Sir Loyd.
I bowed my head as I came forward.
“I’m done with the job. This is the evidence that I brought with me to prove that the problem has been dealt with.” I said as I showed him the bag.
“Hmm…Hmm!?” and to his shock, he was surprised to see a bag filled with eyes.
“I-I see…very good. Have them be handled to Reginold, my butler.” said Sir Loy as he was clearly distraught by the eyes.
“I understand sir.” as left the two, I made my way into the house where in the entrance, I was quickly meet with the only butler…Reginold. An Old man fit for a description of a butler.
“…Mr. Reginold, I believe Sir Loyd has asked me to give these to you. Its evidence of the job I did.” I said.
“Hmm, very well…please, follow me as I will reward you for your efforts.” said Reginold.
“Eh? A reward? But I didn’t really hear anything about this?
“Sir Loyd has informed me of your description and the reward needed in return of your efforts. Please do not try to sully the grace of Sir Loyd. It is nothing but disrespectful if you do.” said Reginold.
“I-I understand.”
So I followed him without another question said.
