- 02: Visiting the Starfalls
As the day passed, and when we finally arrived at the mansion owned by the Starfall nobles, we were assigned at a very moderate room that was fit for many accommodating people. It was something like a barracks made for military groups. Filled with bunk beds and a shower room, it was a good place to put in the children.
Here, the children were placed to stay, while the nuns were put in a separate yet slightly more fanciful room. A room fit for guest.
As I picked my bed to be at the nearest door, I came over and watched as the children were distracting themselves by running around the room.
‘Hmm, its been a hard day…the sun’s already setting, yet their still full of energy. Where do these kids get it from?’ I asked myself as I was quite happy to see them be distracted after having their only home be burned away.
And as I watched them play as what children would, one specific children who I was rather close to, came and sit by my bed.
“Nee…big brother, are we going to go back?” asked a little girl who was about 8 years old.
“Hmm? Annie? What are you doing here? Don’t you want to play with your other brothers and sisters?” I asked her as she was holding on to her little stuffed kitty cat of a plushie.
“Oh, looks like Garfield is a bit dirty…come on, give it here, I’ll clean him up.” I said as I tried to clean the stuff animal from little annie’s hands. Seeing its black burned spots must have been from the fire from the orphanage.
“Gar-gar is hurt…Sister Tiana said she was too busy to fix him right now.” she said as her teary eyes were starting to show. It was at this moment that a child like her was starting to remember the fire from that morning.
“Okay, its fine…I’m here.” seeing her about to cry, she must have been traumatized. So as her brother figure, I tried to comfort her.
I let her sit on my lap and tried to calm her as I brought out a brush from one of my things.
Here, I carefully brushed the stuffed animal and to it, I brought out another skill from one of my abilities as a healer.
[Restore.]
Here, the burned spots from the toy was slowly starting to get fixed, and seeing it be that way, little Annie smiled…she smiled in seeing her stuffed pet be fixed.
“Thank you big brother…” she said as she gave a tight hug at her fluffy stuffed toy.
“Its no problem, now come on, I’ll bring you to bed…”
“But I don’t want to…its scary…”
“…Right.”
Hearing her say that, I just now realized that the reason that these kids were awake even at this hour, after moving the entire day today…was because of the fire.
They were afraid that if they go to sleep, another incident might happen…and they wouldn’t be able to handle that all to well.
They were just children.
“Okay…how about this. As your big brother, I’ll read you a story…don’t you want to hear one of my cool stories?” I asked her in a kind manner.
“Ah..hmm…but what about everyone?” seeing as how she was interested by my preposition, I could have her go to sleep, but it would only happen one I got everyone involved.
“And the rest of you guys, Michael, Tommy, Leslie, Tim, Alex, Jay-Jay, Tasha, Louis, Albert, gather around, and I’ll read you guys a story.”
And in my call for their names, they slowly came by one by one with the interest of hearing my child-wondered stories.
The kind of stories I knew in my past life.
“Oh, a story from Big Bro Abel, this is going to be good!” said Alex as he ran in first and sat next to me. A boy who was only 7.
“Is it going to be about the fish who keeps losing her memories and she wants to try and find her family? I love that story, can you please tell it Brother Abel?” asked Tasha as she went and sat in front of me. A girl who was only 10 years old.
“I want to hear about the brave David who faced a giant who was ten times his size, and-and the boy was able to beat him with just one stone.” said Louis as he went and rolled into bed with his favorite blanket and snuggled with it close to us. He was only about 8 years old as well.
“How about the old man and the boy scout who came exploring into a new world with his wife while they rode on their house that was flying using a hot-air balloon. I wanna hear it again!” said Jay-Jay as he went and sat next to Tasha. A boy only about 11 years old.
“No! Lets continue about the boy who wanted to be the greatest pirate king! You still haven’t even finished that story to us Abel!” said Albert as he went and tried to hand on to my clothes. A boy who was only 9 years old.
“Well, I wanna listen to another story about a group of misfit mystery solving kids who rides in a cart with their funny and always hungry, brown-wolf named scraggly!” said Michael. A boy around 15 years old.
As the rest of the kids tried to speak out their favorite stories, I came and introduced them to a new one which I only remembered back from my past life.
“Well, I won’t be telling you guys something I already told…instead, I’ll tell you about a very brave Ogre who once saved a princess from a dragon…along with his companion, a talking Donkey.” and so my story began..
For an hour, I told the story in explicit detail.
From start to end, I gave them the only story which is one that simply holds value even to my past life.
And in the end, as I finished telling my story, what I was left with was 10 sleeping children, surrounding me.
So as gentle as I can be, I raised each one and placed them on their beds.
I have been acting as these kid’s brother since they came to the orphanage. And rarely do they ever get adopted in a harsh world like this place. Seeing their child-like innocence, I’m happy to take care of these kids even at my own age.
“Good night everyone.” as I watched them sleeping so soundly, I picked the lamp near my bed and I blew out its fire.
Putting the room into a peaceful darkness.
At this hour, I haven’t yet decided to sleep.
There was something else I had to handle.
Someone who I had to meet.
As bright as the moon was today, I wore a cloak to hide my figure, and I walked my way to a certain place.
Climbing the walls at such a silent pace, I knocked with one single tap, and to it, the window opened.
Here, I entered the room…and I pulled down my hood.
In the dark room, only two people were found standing in front of me.
“Sir Loyd, Lady Frey, good evening.” I said as I bowed my head in front of the two married nobles.
Sir Loyd Starfall and Miss Frey Starfall.
“Its been a while Abel, how long has it been sicne you have visited this room?” asked Sir Loyd in his rather commanding voice.
“It has been 5 years, two months and 11 days since I visited you, my lord.” I said in proper courtesy.
“Hmm, to think that such a long time has passed. But still to it, I can never forget your kind act of saving my daughter from those bastards. I hope you don’t mind hearing me say this, but we are very grateful for your actions.” said lady Frey as she gave her thanks and reminded me what I did a few years back.
About five years ago, an urgent call was made throughout the city about the disappearance of the young daughter of the Starfall family.
The City was in an urgent action to try and find her, but alas, not a single clue was found.
But five days later, she was brought back to the humble abode of the Starfall family.
She was uninjured, almost as if she was never harmed in the first place, but to the stories told by the daughter to her parents, she was saved by me while I was hunting in the forest for a wild boar. It was just a sheer coincidence that I saw her being guarded by a group of bandits who seemed to have been employed by a rivaling enemy of the Starfall family.
In the end, I gained the recognition from the family and in return, they simply supported the orphanage then and there as thanks for my help. It was at that point that the orphanage never really had any issues financially. Before I even save the daughter, the orphanage was barely living by, but because of what I did to save the girl, I now had a connection with the Starfall family…
And by obvious reasons, no one knows about that fact other than the Starfall family and me alone.
“…I thank you for the gratitude you have given us since then, my lord, my lady…but I never would have expected that you would have also given my family a temporary home. I thank you.” I said in humble thanks.
“Its our pleasure. But I’m curious about something.” asked Sir Loyd.
“What is it?” I asked.
“Was it truly a demon that attacked the orphanage?” he asked.
“Hmm, even with my own eyes, I could not tell…and with my experience with a demon once, I can tell that that person might not have been one. Although he had wings and the figure of an evil entity, I could not sense the one thing that a demon would naturally posses.”
“And what is that?” asked Lady Frey.
“The ability to Drive a mind mad…all the demons have this ability. And because that thing that attacked the orphanage simply asked us a question about the divine descent, and never killed one of us on the spot, I could barely believe if that demon was actually a demon.”
“So you have faced one before? Even at your own age? Impressive.” said Sir Loyd as he looks to me with an impressed smile.
“It was just by coincidence, and either way…The Fact that the demons are looking for the Divine Descent must mean that the war is nearing. Am I right?” I asked.
“…Yes, the Divine Descent, or the Hero has finally awakened…only about a couple of weeks ago, the blessing was said to have been awakened in the body of a child who shined in golden light far in some Orphanage. Its because of this rumor that the Demons have started attacking.” said Sir Loyd.
The Divine Descent. The hero that was known in many forms of stories in this world. The one responsible for taking and defeating the Demon Lord of this world. It was said that if this person was said to be born, it would be the start of an era of war against the demons and a path towards true peace.
“…You don’t know where this hero is?” I asked.
“No, the church has already taken action and by their movements, it has seemed like the hero has already been found, and has been taken under the church’s protection. The Demon’s are already too late in making a move against humanity.” said Sir Loyd.
“No one knows where she is, but most of the kingdoms are already preparing for an upcoming war in the years to come against the demons.” said Lady Frey.
“But the fact is, I’m not so sure if what attacked us in the orphanage last night was a demon…he never had this intent to kill plastered on his presence.”
“You might be right…there were rumors speculating that a third enemy is said to be also looking for Divine Descent. So it isn’t just the Demons who we have to look out for.” said Sir Loyd.
“Hmm…” thinking hard about this, I tried to wonder on who it is that would ultimately ue the hero, but to my on knowledge, I couldn’t think of a single group that would other than the demons.
“Anyway, now that the business about this demon talk is over, we have a proposal to show you Abel.” said Lady Frey with a keen smile.
“…A proposal?”
“I know it may seem selfish and thick-skinned of us, but to accommodate for your entire family, in return, we simply ask for you to do a couple of odd-jobs for the Starfall family.”
“An Odd-job? For what exactly?”
“Things that you would normally do in the forest. We heard rumors about your feats in the forest. And although your name isn’t the one to pop out, we know for a fact that there is only one person in this city with a healing properties and the fighting capabilities to match an entire group of hunters. With your strength, I believe I don’t have anything to fear for.” said Sir Loyd.
“And you trust those rumors?” I asked.
“Of course, you saved our daughter once from a group of highly skilled bandits at such an early age…if it isn’t you who we can trust, who else?” said Lady Frey.
“I see…nothing is truly free in this world and I understand that. If you have any jobs that are hard to take on, I’ll be the one to take it.” I said.
“Thank you, in truth, this city doesn’t have a single strong adventurer as capable as you are.”
“That may be flattering to hear, but I’m just a normal healer…living my life to survive with a strength strong enough to live another day.”
“I see…here, read this letter. It will have all the information you need for the work tomorrow.” said Sir Loyd as he handed me a letter.
“I’ll come back once the job is done.” I said as I turned around and jumped out of the window.
“We’ll expect some great things from you.” said Lady Frey as she waves her hand goodbye.
To think that they would trust m in such a manner…
And although those rumors about myself aren’t lies, I simply deny them. I’ll get in trouble with the sisters if they ever figure out that these rumors were true.
So that is why I try to hide me acts and only show what is necessary.
