I'm just strong enough to survive because I'm a Normal Healer. - 01: My Life as Abel
My name isn’t really much important…but to my own sense of reason, I live in a world that doesn’t seem so ordinary.
The reason why I say this is because I know that this world isn’t normal.
Flying brooms, magic wands and staffs, swords that throw out fire…one god that the people can actually call out to…and the sense that all of the people are powerful in a physical and abnormal sense.
In other words, this place was a world filled with magic, of something mystical.
And to my own consciousness, I didn’t belong in this world a couple of years ago.
I was brought to this world by who knows what, without rhyme or reason.
I was simply here.
I had no memories of myself…just my past knowledge about my past world…but not myself.
And because I was in this new world, the conflict between my reason for living simply expanded into an empty canvass.
So I made myself anew to my own sense of knowledge.
I named myself…Abel.
And like the other people in this world, I had the ability to bring out a unique skill. The skill to heal.
My history in this new world was that I was a 10 year old boy who found himself one day in an alley. With no memories or any sense of identity, I was brought into an orphanage where I was raised by a nun who acted as my mother figure.
I was a person blessed with the ability to become a mage with the powers to support a fighting group called adventurers.
Through the years, I have helped the orphanage in any way I can…support it in any way I can.
I came to love this family.
We have lived peacefully then…and I thought it would continue till I would one day leave.
But that wasn’t the case.
****
In a small city named Mistwood, out by some meadow, an orphanage was seen living under the support of a certain noble kind man.
It was early that afternoon, I just came back from the groceries with Sister Mary…the person who personally raised me as her own.
With it, carrying 150 kgs of groceries on my bag, I simply walked along side her as if I was carrying nothing.
This kind of lifestyle has been normal for me.
In the Orphanage, I would usually take on the role of doing the heavy jobs. From picking up heavy groceries, pulling in carts, collecting fire wood from the forest, and maybe at time, maybe hunting for meats, I was the person who was tasked of it all.
It was because of my ability to heal.
With this ability, each time I was tired, I could easily heal myself and stand back up from a tiring day as if it didn’t affected me at all.
And through the years of doing this kind of work and healing routine, my body simply adapted. I simply became stronger than what normally is made from doing odd-jobs.
In this world which was filled with magic…yet somehow was placed at a medieval state of time. Armor’s for knights could be found here, swords were used instead of guns…it was literally a fantasy world.
“Sister, I know its not my place to ask…but for some reason, you bought a lot of things from the market today. from meats to even Alcohol, which we usually don’t buy.” I said as I looked to her quite curiously.
“Ah…its not that weird…some of the nuns at our home is simply asking for it because…because she has a drinking problem.”
“…is that anyway to talk to a sister?” I asked.
“Hmm..” feeling conflicted by her own excuse, sister Mary simply turned to me and smiled innocently.
“…Is this because of my birthday tomorrow?” I asked
“!?” saying that out loud, Sister Mary simply stops walking, and she looks to me with teary eyes.
“…Ah..sorry.” I said as I tried to apologize.
“N-no, its okay…yes…its because of your 18th birthday tomorrow…”
“Why buy alcohol though?” I asked.
“its because you have reached adulthood…and also because tomorrow is the day that you finally leave the orphanage.” in her words, she was shaky..almost as if she was about to cry.
“…we wanted to celebrate your birthday in thanks for always helping around with the heavy jobs…”
“…Hmm, me being 18 tomorrow really feels surreal. I can finally earn some good money for the orphanage…maybe I can even become a mage like you told me to in the past.” I said.
“…a mage?…Abel, I think its safer to just live a normal life. Don’t try to be a adventurer…you know how it is with their lives. They always come back home missing an arm or a leg…its not right for you to jump in in that kind of lifestyle.” she said.
“…B-but, the money is good. And I’m a healer…I can easily fix myself when I get hurt. See!” I said. As I demonstrated her a simple chant on healing magic.
“Hmm…no, I guess your right. I don’t have any control over your life…but I’m just worried.”
“I’ll be fine, now come on, lets get back quick…I still have to chop some firewood for tomorrow.” I said as I paced myself back while carrying 50 kgs of groceries on my back.”
“Okay…” as we both walked back and did our daily jobs inside,
At night when everyone has rested after a day of hard work…
Something felt wrong…
Fire…a burning flame that simply enveloped the entire orphanage.
“.…” by my own, I was sleeping in my usual bed…
But in this grievous night, I felt the smoke block my lungs, so I awoke…and as I did, I heard the screams of my guardians as they tried to take the kids away from the beds and wake them so that they could escape the burning orphanage.
One by one, the children cried and tried to run out of the house.
And by its miracle, each children were able to escape…all except one person.
“…Where’s sister Mary!” I asked as I stood in front of one of the sisters.
Sister Mary…the very mother figure who raised me since I was a child…
The very person who loved me as if I was her own…
To see that she was not here, I could only cry…
The next thing I knew…
A scream was heard…
“AAAHHH!” the scream of a woman in pain…
And as I turned to the burning building, there by the distance…the sight of a winged person with horns stood on top of the burning house…the sight of its murderous gaze simply loomed over us…and between his hands, the body of a struggling woman was seen trying to escape the person.
“…A demon!?” said one of the nuns as they watched the winged man tighten his grip over the neck of the woman in his grasp.
“T-that’s Sister Mary!” shouted one of the Nuns.
“Where is the child of divine descent?” asked the demon with his coarse voice.
“…I…I don’t know…” said Sister mary as she tried to strongly escape the demon’s grip.
“…it won’t help you if you keep your lips tight sister. It’ll only cause you your doom.” said the demon as he turns his head below..
“Hmm…not a single one of them seem significant at all…no signs of divinity in sight. What a shame, it does seem like I do have the wrong orphan’s home.” said the demon. And by his last say, he tosses Sister Mary down unto the floor.
And at the moment he tosses her aside, his entire body suddenly turned to smoke…escaping from the scene.
“AAAh!!!” falling at such a pace, from the roof, it seemed like it was impossible to be saved…
But I was there.
With her falling at from the distance, I ran as fast as I could to reach her.
Using every trick I learned with the properties of magic, I was able to control one common skill that would help me in this moment.
[Haste Boost!]
A skill that allows me to increase my speed in both reaction and action.
Enhancing my very capability to heal…my body was strengthened and I ran at a pace only an adventurer could create. At such a speed, I was able to save Sister Mary. But her fall and my catch was painful, so I used my ability to heal her as I caught her.
“Ghk!” having to catch her adult body, my body could feel the pressure of her weight, but because of my strength, she simply weighed like a feather.
“..gh…S-sister Mary, are you okay?” I asked as I quickly observed her condition.
“A-abel…thank you.” as she said her thanks, she suddenly fell asleep.
Seeing her breath, it seemed like she was still okay.
“…!?” seeing the redness of her neck from the grip from the demon, I felt angered by this, but quickly enough, I healed her.
[Heal]
Having to heal her, I was able to look in front of me and gave a sad look at the burning orphanage.
“…the orphanage.”
To think that at midnight…at my birthday, it was the day that something terrible happened.
Help didn’t arrive as fast as it could.
By the time some mage was able to put out the fire…
There was nothing left to salvage.
By the next day…
The noble came…
The noble who supported the orphanage.
Sir Loyd Starfall.
Wearing his noble attire, he rode on his horse with a graceful stare.
“Hmm, I’ve heard that the orphanage was attacked by a demon, was this true?” asked the Nobleman.
“it is my lord…it seems that they were looking for the child of divine descent.” said Sister Tiana, the representative of the nuns in the orphanage.
“The child of divine descent…I see. Seeing as how the Orphanage has been burned to its waste, I have to make plans to rebuild it once again.”
“Thank you my lord.” said Sister Tiana as she bowed in the grace of the noble who took quick action over the situation.
“For now, I might be able to accommodate you and the rest of the children in my home. My wife has heard of this incident and is willing to welcome you until the orphanage is fully rebuilt once again.” said the Nobleman.
“We are truly grateful for your actions.” said sister Tiana in thanks.
As the nobleman left, Sister Tiana was tasked to be able to come with the rest of the children into the nobleman’s home by sundown. During that time, we had to prepare our things as we make our way.
By that time Sister Tiana was able to visit the tent I put up beside the burned orphanage. Where inside, Sister Mary was resting.
“Sister Mary, it seems that the lord has given us the grace to live under Sir Loyd’s abode. Are you doing well?” asked Sister Tiana as she checked on the condition of Sister Mary.
“…thank god…and thank Sir Loyd for his graces…” said Sister Mary as she was recovering from the attack.
“Hmm…Abel, how is her condition?” asked Sister Tiana as she looked to me with a worried expression.
“She is fine, thankfully, nothing seems to have been cursed by the demon or scars that might be a problem in the future. She was only physically attacked, so my healing ability can do its wonders on her.” I said in trying to calm down the worried Sister Tiana.
“Okay, that is good. I’m sorry we couldn’t celebrate your birthday today…to think that a time like this actually came.” said Sister Tiana.
“Its okay, I’m just glad that everyone is now safe.” I said in return.
“Now, since we have a lot to do, I’ll start packing up what’s left from the fire. Surely some things survived.” I said as I got out of the tent.
“Okay…” as I left, a lot of things had to be done.
