Chapter 13
“Chloe, like I said before, it’s a bit embarrassing. Could you act more normally?”
“…I am acting normally. I’m just a bit cautious, that’s all.”
Chloe walked closely beside me, scanning the surroundings like a bodyguard. Before things had changed—when they used to hate and bully me—he would stick even closer to me. Now that they had returned to their normal selves, and my mental state had improved since then, it felt a little awkward.
“But, Chloe, the way people are looking at me now is clearly different from before, don’t you think?”
“…Roa, I’m still worried. I can’t shake the feeling that someone might be trying to deceive you.”
I took another look around.
The gazes that had been so openly disdainful of me before seemed to have shifted to something more pitiable today.
Although a few of the nobles, who had disliked me for a long time, still shot me loathing glances.
“G-good morning, Roa.”
“Morning, Mia.”
I turned to see who had called out to me.
It was Mia, who greeted me cautiously. Despite the apology and subsequent visits, her sense of guilt toward me hadn’t faded. I could feel that she was still hesitant, trying not to impose on me in any way.
“Uh, um… can I, um… go to the classroom with you?”
“Ah…”
It wasn’t that I didn’t trust Mia, and judging by the reactions of those around us, it should be fine. But I hesitated, worried that the nobles who had always disliked me might accuse Mia of betrayal or something similar.
However, it seemed that my hesitation was a mistake.
“I-I’m sorry. Y-You didn’t want to go to school with someone like me, right? I’m sorry. I can’t believe I didn’t notice something so simple. I’m so shameless. You’d be better off without a childhood friend like me, right?”
Mia’s tears started to flow as her face twisted in distress. She fumbled inside her bag for something, and I hurriedly intervened.
“That’s not it, Mia. I don’t have any issue going to school with you. I was just worried about you, that’s all.”
“Is that… so?”
It seemed like my sincere explanation managed to clear up Mia’s misunderstanding.
“I’m sorry for jumping to conclusions. And thank you for worrying about me.”
“I’m just glad you understand.”
“But, Roa,”
“What is it?”
Mia wiped her tears and stared at me intently.
“Don’t worry, if those people try to do anything to me, I’ll just get rid of them. And if they try to do anything to you… Haha.”
Mia smiled as she muttered these words, her eyes taking on a vacant look, making it difficult to discern what she was thinking.
