When I was Reincarnated into a Game World, I Was a Farmer’s Son - Chapter 43
Chapter 43
I decided to go further into the forest, beyond the usual area where I hunt Horn Sabers and Forest Wolves. Today, I made a bold decision to try and hunt stronger monsters. I bring two oak sticks that the lumberjack made of me, along with the butchering knife strapped onto my waist.
The oak sticks made by the lumberjack are incredibly strong, even though I’ve been using it for quite some time, it shows no sign of breaking, but just in case, I carry a spare stick with me in case of emergencies.
As for the butchering knife, after sharpening it for quite some time, I managed to restore its sharpness, but it is quite worn out though.
To ensure that I don’t forget how to butcher monsters, I often butcher the monsters I hunted. There are some times where my hand slipped and I accidentally cut the monster’s bone, resulting in a small chip on my knife.
I still haven’t told dad and mom about my routine hunting monsters. I’ve considered eating the meat alone, but since I don’t have the tool to start fire to cook them, I can’t eat the meat. I certainly don’t have the courage to eat the meat raw either.
Moreover, when I think about it, starting a fire could potentially attract attention from someone in the village due to the smoke, and that could cause a serious problem for me.
So, if I want to eat the meat, I’ll have to take it home and ask my mom to cook it.
By the way, some time ago, my mom said something like,
‘Once you grow a bit older, you’ll be able to use simple magic.’
However, even though I’ve been levelling up, my MP is still at 0. I should subtly ask my mom about it next time. I really want to try using magic.
This time, I brought the butchering knife that I usually avoid using. If I struggle to defeat the monster with the oak stick, I’ll have to use the knife as a weapon. It makes sense that a blade would have higher attack power than a wooden stick.
Using the knife to attack monsters might damage the knife and might make it unrepairable, but if that happens, I’ll just accept it. Above all, I want to prioritize my own safety above all.
On the way to the deeper part of the forest, I encountered some Horn Sabers and Forest Wolves, but I managed to deal with them easily. As I go further into the depths, the air seems to grow heavier, but maybe it’s just my imagination?
As I advance, the thickness of grass and the number of trees increased, narrowing my field of vision.
Suddenly, I sense something move near me. Out of nowhere, a branch extends towards me. Reflexively, I jump back and managed to dodge its attack.
Mog Treant
Tree-like monster
Rarity: D
A monster in a form of a tree
It attacks its prey using its hardened branches.
Actually, in the game, the higher-ranked type of Mog Treant called Marmog Treant is commonly found around Machikane village. The fact that I was able to dodge its sudden attack is partly due to my awareness to the surrounding trees, I anticipated the appearance of Tree-type monsters. There’s no doubt that it’s a stronger monster compared to what I’ve encountered so far.
The appearance of the Mog Torrent resembles a thick-trunked tree, but its height is only about 2 meters, which seemed quite out of place compared to the surrounding forest trees.
Just after I confirmed it is indeed a Mog Treant using the Appraisal skill, it suddenly launches another attack.
Its attack speed is not much different from the Horn Sabers or Forest Wolves’ attacks, I dodge it quite easily.
The attacks from the Mog Treant doesn’t stop, and as I continue to dodge its attacks, I noticed something. It seems that the Mog Treant indeed has many branches, but it is only using one branch for each attack. It is not simultaneously attacking me with multiple branches. I’m not sure why, but it’s fortunate for me because it would have been much harder to dodge if it had attacked me with multiple branches at once.
I should make my move now, I can’t keep dodging its attacks forever. I close in on the Mog Treant and swing my oak stick at it.
“Thud!”
Huh, why did it make that sound? Did I manage to hurt it?
As I approach it, I use the Appraisal skill on it to take a look at its HP. It seems that I indeed manged to deal some damage.
Since the it doesn’t have a face or any expressions to read from, I feel a bit uneasy. I thought my attacks was ineffective. However, it seems that I will be able to defeat it with the same attack about four or five more times.
As I continue to dodge its branches and land counterattacks on it, its wriggling branches suddenly stops moving and it dropped down. It seems like I managed to defeat it. That was easier than I expected.
I wonder how much experience do I gain from defeating it. Let’s take a look.
Hmm, it seems like I’ve gained 750 experience points from defeating it. Defeating a Horn Saber gives me 250 exp points. So I gained exactly three times as much.
Well, this is a piece of cake! Alright, shall I keep on hunting Mog Treants in this area?
With that in mind, as I roam through the forest to search for my next prey, suddenly, just like before, a branch extends towards me. I managed to dodge it again.
Great! I can easily dodge them without any problem!
Ouch!
Suddenly, I feel an attack on my back. It seems that there is another Mog Treant behind me, this time, I let my guard down and ended up taking its attack.
Ow, ow, it hurts, but thanks to my status values, I didn’t take much damage. It should be fine.
Right now, I should focus on defeating one of them and reduce their number—ouch!
As I try to dodge the attacks from the two Mog Treants and land a counterattack on one of them, another branch hit me from a different direction. I couldn’t dodge it in time, taking another hit.
W-Wait, there are three of them?! While I’m caught off guard, another branch extends to my direction, but this time I managed to dodge it.
Dodge, dodge, dodge… Wait, there are four of them now!?
Dodging attacks from four of them is indeed hard, and even when I try to reduce their numbers by defeating them one by one, I end up taking hits from the others, making it impossible for me to land any counterattacks.
Before I knew it, I found myself on the defensive, unable to land a single hit on them. The attacks keep coming, my body hurts all over.
Ouch! It hurts! It hurts so much! I-I can’t do this anymore! Strategic retreat!
And so, I flee. Fortunately, the Mog Torrents seems unable to move from their positions, so they can’t chase after me as I escape.
Who said it is going to be easy!? Seriously!?
