Chapter 48: “Ready, Set—!”
“Oh, before we start having fun—”
Kana said, moving over to her closet and pulling out a small box.
It was beautifully wrapped, complete with a ribbon. “Thank you for this past month. I’m looking forward to many more.”
She placed the palm-sized box into my hand and gave a small bow.
“A present?” “Yeah! I put a lot of thought into it, so I hope you like it.”
“I’m confident I’ll be happy with anything you give me.”
I hadn’t expected Kana to get me a present, too. I had been hesitating, trying to find the right moment, and she beat me to it.
Since it had come to this, I might as well give her mine now, so we could open them together.
“Actually, I got something for you too.” I reached into my bag and pulled out the gift I had bought the other day, handing it to Kana.
“Wow! Souma-kun, you got me a present too?!” Her eyes sparkled with excitement as she held my gift in her hands.
“Alright, should we open them together?” “Yeah! Let’s do it on the count of three!”
We locked eyes and placed our hands on the boxes. “Ready, set—go!”
At the same time, we lifted the lids. Inside my box was a silver ring.
Looking closer, I saw our initials and the date of our anniversary engraved on it.
“This is… really nice.” I slipped it onto the ring finger of my right hand.
Lifting my hand to the ceiling, the light reflected beautifully off the ring—it was more dazzling than any jewelry I had ever seen.
Minase had told me that giving a ring as a present was unoriginal, but receiving one felt incredible.
She didn’t trick me on purpose, did she? Well, thanks to that, I ended up getting a necklace that suits Kana perfectly, so I guess it worked out.
“I love it…” Kana gazed at my gift with a melting smile. I was relieved. If she had told me I had bad taste, my heart would’ve shattered.
“And this ring… it’s perfect.” I admired the ring on my right hand as I spoke, but Kana suddenly tilted her head in confusion.
“Why are you wearing it on your right hand?” “Well… it’s not a wedding ring.”
“But I wanted you to wear it on your left ring finger…”
“Isn’t that a little too soon?” “We’re not married, but I just wanted to feel the atmosphere of it…”
She puffed up her cheeks in a pout. She knew it wasn’t a wedding ring, but she still wanted to enjoy the feeling of it.
Still, I wasn’t going to wear it on my left hand just yet. “I want to save my left ring finger for when we exchange rings together for real.”
I wanted to keep that spot open until the day we both put rings on each other’s fingers.
