Chapter 49: “A Gift from My Sister?”
“Souma…” Kana murmured my name, gazing up at me as I stroked her head.
“Well, it’s still something for the future.” “A distant future?” “No… probably not that far away.” “I see.”
Marriage was still too early for us to seriously think about as high schoolers. But maybe in two or three years, it wouldn’t seem so distant anymore.
When that time came, I wanted to be the one to give her a wedding ring.
“Hey… put the necklace on me.” Kana handed me the necklace and turned her back toward me.
“Sure. But I think you have a dress that would go perfectly with this necklace. You should wear it too.”
“A dress?” “Yeah. Didn’t Minase give you something?”
Now that I thought about it, she hadn’t mentioned anything about getting a gift from Minase.
If she had, she would have bragged about it to me already.
And knowing Kana, she’d be wearing it right now instead of just her usual casual outfit.
“A gift from my sister? What are you talking about?”
“Wait, seriously?” “Yeah, seriously.”
As I clasped the necklace around her neck, Kana turned to me with a puzzled look.
“Was Onee-chan planning to give me clothes?” “More like… she already bought them.”
“Wait, how do you know that?” “Well… we talked about what gifts to get you.”
“Oh, that makes sense.” I didn’t really want to tell her I had gone shopping with Minase.
Not because she’d misunderstand, but because she might get jealous.
But it was weird. Minase had bought Kana an outfit, so why hadn’t she given it to her yet?
I’d expected her to immediately make Kana wear it and gush over how cute she looked.
“I wonder if Onee-chan is okay…” Kana murmured, lowering her eyes. “What do you mean?”
“She’s been acting a little strange lately. She looks cheerful, but it feels like she’s forcing herself.”
“Like the kind of fake smile people use at school?” “Exactly!”
So my hunch had been right. That smile she gave me when we parted—it was fake.
And if Kana noticed it too, there was no doubt about it. But why?
Had something happened to Minase recently?
“She sighs a lot when she thinks I’m not looking. And more than usual, her smiles feel forced. Even in front of me.”
“Did something happen that might’ve made her upset?” “If I knew, I wouldn’t be this worried.”
Kana frowned, troubled. Minase was her beloved sister. It made sense she’d be concerned.
Today was supposed to be about celebrating our anniversary. But now, we had something much more important to figure out.
