- Chapter 40 - I can't reach the moon...
This was the first cultural festival for the three of us who had always been together until junior high.
We wandered around the stalls, just like we did back then.
I teased Shogo again as he ate like a fool, and Yoshiki smiled as he watched.
Even when Shogo rushed to the restroom after eating too much and it was just Yoshiki and I, we talked about old times. When Shogo returned from the long trip to the toilet, he immediately knew what we were talking about, even though he joined the conversation halfway through. The three of us burst into laughter, not caring about the people around us, clutching our stomachs and laughing uproariously.
Even at the game stalls, Shogo still acted like a fool, and I would tease him while Yoshiki laughed and watched. Occasionally, he would make harsh comments, but that was the usual dynamic between the three of us.
It felt like we had gone back to our middle school days.
I thought it was a time like that, a warm and sunny time… but…
“Um, you’re the person who played in Koshien, right?”
When I went to the grounds for the soccer club event, a child wearing a hat ran up to us.
Yoshiki bent down to meet the height of the young boy and showed his usual refreshing smile.
“Could it be that you saw me?”
“Yeah! You hit a lot of hits as the number 7 third baseman!”
“Oh, I see. I’m glad you knew.”
“You know, you know! I’m playing baseball too, I am aiming for Koshien.”
“I see. That’s great. Koshien is amazing.”
“I wish I could go too.”
Yoshiki patted the boy’s head through his hat.
“If you practice a lot starting now, you can go. Even I managed to go, after all.”
“Really!?”
“Yeah!”
I observed the conversation between the high school baseball player and the young baseball player from a short distance away.
“Yoshiki is really amazing. Even though he’s an amateur, he gets approached by so many people.”
“Yeah,” I casually replied to Shogo’s impressed voice as I watched the two of them.
“But I never thought Yoshiki would go to a prestigious school and play in Koshien.”
“Yeah, that’s true,” I agreed.
Yoshiki was shorter and thinner with a timid personality compared to the two of us. But around the second year of middle school, he suddenly experienced a rapid growth spurt and now has an incredibly athletic body.
When he told the young baseball player, “Even I managed to go,” he must have been conveying that he, who used to be weak, had trained hard and become strong. It wasn’t false modesty; he was genuinely telling the young baseball player that he had transformed himself through practice.
Suddenly, Shogo put his hand on my left shoulder and said,
“You’ve already moved on, right?”
It was a rare, somewhat older-brother-like comment from Shogo, so I couldn’t help but laugh a little.
“Yeah, you too, right?”
“I’ve moved on since before I entered high school. But, you know, I was really worried about you… When you got that shoulder injury, I thought you might really die.”
“At that time… maybe it could have happened.”
“But meeting Yoshiki at this time means you’ve already moved on, right?”
“Yeah, after a year… It must have been difficult for Yoshiki to know how to approach me too. But after two years, I can definitely change my feelings. My father and mother were considerate of me too.”
“That’s good. Then let’s continue to support Yoshiki as his number one and number two fans from now on. That’s the only thing we can do for him right now.”
“Yeah…”

We spent the entire day at the cultural festival with just the three of us. At one point, we received a message from a classmate. They apologized for having to work at the store all day tomorrow and asked for our understanding. We readily agreed. Our classmates are kind too. Shogo is kind as well. And, Yoshiki is as kind as ever.
Yoshiki, who had a curfew, left early and went home while on the verge of tears. It must have been fun. I hope he enjoyed the day to the fullest. That feeling overflowed from his eyes.
However, I couldn’t bring myself to feel as strongly as to cry.
I reunited with my close friend after a long time and enjoyed the festival to the fullest, not knowing when we would meet again. Yoshiki and Shogo had tears in their eyes, but I had dried up to the point where I couldn’t even shed a tear. It made me wonder if I didn’t have a human heart.
After saying goodbye to Yoshiki, the sun gradually set. In November, when the sunset happens earlier, the sun that would still be bright in the summer was already darkening the sky.
As it grew dimmer, I walked alone in the hallway, where the brightness of the fluorescent lights became prominent.
The hallway we had been frolicking in just moments ago. Now, people I didn’t recognize were wandering there. And as they passed by, it seemed they were looking at us earlier.
“No, maybe not…”
We three seemed to be genuinely enjoying themselves. That’s how it appeared. But what about me? Was I truly having fun when we were walking around the cultural festival as a group of three? A weird doubt began to creep in.
Lost in strange thoughts in my head, I felt a cool breeze brush against my cheek.
Curious about the direction the wind was coming from, I looked and noticed it seemed to be coming from the stairs leading to the rooftop.
Even though there were no stalls or anything set up there, I felt oddly drawn to it and started climbing the stairs. My steps echoed in the silent hallway with each step, while everywhere else was bustling with excitement, this place felt like a different world, strangely silent.
With each rhythmic step, I ascended and reached a landing. The door to the rooftop was open. Perhaps because the school building was in negative pressure, the wind from the rooftop had traveled down the stairs to where I was.
Normally, the rooftop was off-limits. It was locked, so no one could enter. But now, the door to the rooftop was open, and driven by curiosity, I stepped onto the rooftop without hesitation.
“Wow, the breeze is amazing.”
The sun had set, and the moon was close.
It felt like I could almost reach out and touch it.
“But I can’t reach it.”
Even if I reached out my hand to the moon, I couldn’t touch it. Well, that’s obvious. Anyone would know that.
The moon, so close yet unreachable, felt like a representation of the relationship between me and Yoshiki.
It wasn’t easy, but we could still communicate and meet. But it had become completely different between me and Yoshiaki. One was a star of the high school baseball tournament, while the other was just an ordinary high school boy.
“Yoshiki has become like a distant moon that I can’t reach anymore.”
“The rooftop is off-limits, you know.”
Lost in sentimentality, a voice I had become familiar with by now reached my ears.
Just from the voice, I knew who it was, but when I looked towards the rooftop door, I saw a silver-haired girl, sparkling like a fairy in the moonlight, coming towards me, her hair fluttering in the wind.
“I guess I’ve been caught by the student council president who was patrolling this area.”
The armband on her arm indicated she was part of the student council responsible for patrolling. Had she been patrolling all this time? It must have been tough for her.
“How did you get in?”
“The door was open.”
“It was…?”
Sigh… She let out a sigh as she seemed annoyed.
“So, you forgot to lock the rooftop after taking down the banner for the cultural festival. That’s quite a blunder by the student council, isn’t it?”
It seemed that locking the rooftop was the responsibility of the student council. Therefore, she didn’t seem to press me any further.
“Nevertheless, Akira-kun, what are you doing alone in a place like this?”
“Well… I guess I wanted to indulge in a sense of ennui.”
[TL/N : A feeling of listlessness and dissatisfaction arising from a lack of occupation or excitement.]
“Ennui…? But you had fun with your old friend today, didn’t you?”
“Yeah. It was enjoyable. We had a really great time.”
“Then why do you look so gloomy?”
Upon her question, I instinctively bring my hand to my face.
“Do I really look like that?”
“You do.”
She stated it with certainty.
“It’s just like when you asked me to throw away the baseball equipment. And the day before the cultural festival, when we talked on the balcony, you had the same gloomy expression.”
“The balcony, but…?”
Ah, I see. That’s why. That’s why Yuki asked me if I was close friends with ‘him’. Meeting a friend with a pained expression isn’t what you would call friendship.
“Is something bothering you?”
Yuki, who kindly asked, spoke with a saintly expression.
“I’m not the student council president, Yuki Ohira, right now. I’m your personal maid, Yuki, and I’m here to listen to you. Please feel free to pour out your heart as much as you want.”
When she spoke those gentle words…
“Tell me about yourself.”
I no longer had any other choice but to confide with her.
