Episode 6: The Raw Oyster Scandal and Circle Meeting
“──Everyone, the reason I’ve gathered you here today is none other than the approaching Holy War.”
In the borrowed meeting room, the president, seated at the head of the table, rested her elbows and clasped her hands, glaring at us. I wonder if those sunglasses are stylish, or is it just me?
“Holy War? Rei-kun, what are you talking about?”
“It’s probably about the ball tournament.”
“Silence! Don’t speak out of turn!”
“Yes! My apologies!”
Our president… or rather, our Supreme Commander, seems to be quite angry. It’s understandable, though. There are only ten people here today, which means we can’t even play soccer.
“Alright, Uka! Tell me why I gathered everyone here today!”
I stood up at my name.
“Yes! The comrades who attended the drinking party the other night have died as martyrs due to raw oysters!”
“Correct! That’s exactly it! Now, sit down! You little pest!”
“Understood, sir!”
“Now, let’s begin the countermeasure meeting!”
The president slammed her hand on the whiteboard.
“Rei-kun, what’s up with her?”
“When people make up their minds, their personalities tend to change. I think it’s probably something like that.”
As I whispered to my senpai, a club member with square glasses raised their hand.
“Commander! According to my data, if we proceed like this, there’s no chance of victory! I suggest we consider abandoning the front line!”
“Who the hell are you?”
“Yes! I’m second-year Takeshi Koyama!”
“Koyama? Uka, check the list!”
“Yes, right away!”
Uka checked the membership list, and confirmed his existence.
“I’ve found him! Takeshi Koyama! He’s been with our club since the beginning!”
“I see… Then you should understand how important the ball tournament is to our circle!”
“But… with this few people, we can’t even participate in soccer!”
“Enough! We don’t need cowards like you here!”
The senpai snapped her fingers. Immediately, two people in black suits appeared from the sliding door.
“Send him to the East Campus.”
“What!? No way!?”
The meeting room became chaotic. How cruel!
“East Campus? I’ve never heard of it.”
While I was covering my mouth in shock, senpai seemed confused.
“East Campus, also known as ‘the countryside’. It’s a campus in name only, located two and a half hours away by train and bus, with not a single convenience store around. It’s a hellish place, constantly hunted by hungry, savage cuckoos.”
“Huh? What’s a cuckoo?”
“Not sure, but probably some kind of vulture.”
The two suited figures moved closer to Koyama.
“Don’t come closer! Stay away!”
“Senpai, don’t make eye contact. We can’t save him now.”
“I wasn’t planning on looking at any other man but you.”
One of the suited figures left, and everyone was silent. The person sent to East Campus would not return until two and a half hours later, and would spend nearly 2000 yen in the process.
“Alright, does anyone else have an opinion?”
Silence
No one dared to breathe. No one knew what could trigger a trip to East Campus.
“Rei-kun, were those black-suited people suspicious?”
Even now, senpai whispered to me, sounding strangely excited.
“Well, there are people who change their personality when they make up their mind. I think it’s something like that.”
“Alright, Uka! Explain the rules of the ball tournament to these new recruits!”
“Yes, ma’am!”
The competition consisted of four events: soccer, softball, basketball, and tennis. Softball and tennis were mixed-gender, while soccer and basketball were divided by gender.
“Each event has a tournament, and the circle with the highest average win rate will be crowned champion! That’s the general outline,” Uka explained.
Applause
“Good job, Uka, sit down.”
I was allowed to sit down, and felt relieved to avoid being sent to East Campus.
“Now, if we win, we’ll earn enough money to pay for three drinking parties! You all like to drink, right?”
“Yes!”
“Then we must win! By any means necessary!”
With that, the president quickly assigned tasks, and within minutes, our group was divided into several teams.
“Scatter! Everyone knows what to do now! Action is everything!”
“Yes!”
“No! You’ll say ‘Yes, ma’am!'”
“Yes, ma’am!”
One by one, everyone left the meeting room. My role was to scout out the other circles.
“Alright, Rei-kun, where should we go first?”
“Huh? Aren’t you also part of the information gathering?”
“No, I’m not in the circle. I can do whatever I want.”
“True.”
We made our way to the soccer club’s territory, located a little ways from the club building. It was a simple dirt field with just a small shack for shelter.
“Senpai, be careful.”
“Why?”
“Our soccer club is really shady. Please don’t entertain any advances.”
“Then I’ll just have to stick closer to you.”
She pulled me closer, and suddenly my arm was resting right in her chest. It felt like the Titanic, and my head was spinning.
“We better be sneaky.”
“Yeah.”
We sneaked around and found ourselves hiding near the soccer locker room. I was listening in on the conversation when I heard a voice crackle in my earpiece.
“Can you hear me, Uka? Over.”
“This is headquarters, loud and clear. What’s the situation?”
“We’re currently in the soccer club’s locker room, where some smelly soccer guys are changing. Over.”
“We don’t need that info. How’s Shion? She’s probably nearby, right?”
“Yeah, she’s keeping watch outside the field.”
“Ha, I knew you didn’t want anyone getting close to her.”
Truthfully, my relationship with senpai was a bit confusing. She called me her fiancé, but I didn’t really feel any strong romantic emotions.
“Not being honest, huh? Playing hard to get?”
“Cutting comms now. See you later.”
After a quick conversation, I snuck out of the locker room. When the meeting was over, I quickly made my way back to the club room.
“Rei-kun, thank you. That was… cool,” senpai said, her voice softer, and her face flushed slightly.
“I… didn’t really mean to do that. Let’s just head back.”
“Yeah, let’s.”
We arrived at the club building, and there was a crowd gathered by the stairs, murmuring uneasily.
“What’s going on here… Ugh! It smells!”
“That’s terrible.”
A foul smell hit us, and I immediately sensed something was wrong.
“Could it be…”
“What’s wrong?”
“Senpai, this is bad. I think I know what’s going on.”
“──Too late, Uka.”
Descending the stairs was the president, fully clad in a hazardous suit.
“President, what happened?”
“They threw stinky fish guts and natto into the club room.”
It was clear who the culprits were.
“This is war. Those bastards are dead now.”
“Yeah, they’ve crossed the line. Let’s go, Uka.”
“But what about senpai?”
“You stay here. It’s too dangerous.”
“Where are you going?”
“We’re going after the most dangerous circle at this university. If you’re going, you’d better be prepared.”
“What on earth is it?”
“──The knitting club.”
