Episode 5: Heavy Breathing and Her Reason
Living alone in a small apartment, with only a bed, a low table, a chair, a bookshelf, and a TV stand, space becomes cramped quickly.
But today, for the first time, I found myself feeling grateful for this 30,000 yen rent, security deposit included, eight-tatami mat room.
“Fuh, fuh—”
Yes, I can hear it. What, you ask? It’s simple: the sound of a shower. Of course, it’s not coming from the neighboring room. It’s from my own bathroom, the one I use every day.
“Rei-kun? Can I borrow your shampoo and body soap?”
“Y-yes! Of course!!”
The voice echoed, a hint of allure in it. And my heart is racing. It’s like a heavy metal band is playing inside my chest.
“Fuh, fuh—”
Ah! I can barely breathe. It feels like I could fly just by exhaling.
Alright. In moments like this…
“I guess I’ll play a mobile game… oh, wait, I don’t have one anymore.”
Damn it. What am I supposed to do? My mind can’t handle this mixture of anticipation and anxiety!
I decide to lie down on the bed, trying to look calm.
Today has been a rollercoaster. Waking up to such a beautiful senior, going to university, attending classes, and then to the club… Slowly, my eyelids grow heavy. Maybe I’m more tired than I realized.
“Just a little… nap… might be okay.”
The moment I spoke, I relaxed, and before I knew it, I sank into the soft mattress, my consciousness slipping into the realm of dreams.
…
…
“Eh? You really thought I was serious? Haha! There’s no way someone like you would be a match for me!”
“!!”
I woke up with a start.
Outside the window, crows were calling out in some direction. The sound of a garbage truck filled the air.
“Ugh… What a terrible wake-up.”
There was no lingering drowsiness, only confusion.
“What time is it?”
I checked my phone by my bedside.
It was 6:30. I don’t have class until the second period, so I could still sleep for another three hours. But for some reason, I didn’t feel like going back to sleep.
“Alright.”
I got out of bed and headed to the bathroom.
“Wait, is my senior… not here?”
She probably gave up and went home after seeing me fall asleep after just twenty minutes. It wouldn’t be strange if she lost patience with me.
“Or maybe…”
Could it be that yesterday was all just a dream? If so, that would explain everything.
After all, I’m a completely average guy with trauma and a messed-up life, while my senior is a stunningly beautiful, capable person.
No matter how much I think about it, I can’t figure out why she’d like someone like me.
“…Yeah. It must have been a dream.”
A sudden sense of sadness crept over me. It was a strange feeling… as if I had been clinging to this fantasy for far too long.
“Well, I guess I should have breakfast.”
I opened the fridge and pulled out some fish sausage. It’s not the best, but it’s the most cost-effective option and a solid companion for anyone living alone.
I chewed slowly, turning on the TV.
“Today’s weather is…”
Let it rain! I silently wished for it. I wasn’t in the mood for anything today, and didn’t plan to hang any laundry…
“Wait, didn’t I hang it yesterday?”
Or maybe I didn’t? I headed out into the hallway toward the washing machine.
“Mm? Huh?”
Everything was neatly folded and placed on top of the washing machine.
“Huh, that’s strange.”
I usually just throw my laundry into the closet without folding it. Definitely not because I’m lazy—absolutely not!
Just then, the doorbell rang.
“Eh? Already? Who is it? Coming!”
Too early for a package delivery… Could it be a salesman?
I cautiously opened the door.
“Good morning, Rei-kun. I made breakfast, so if you’d like, you can come over and eat.”
“Eh? Oh! Huh!? Senior?!”
“What’s wrong? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
My senior looked at me with a puzzled expression as she noticed my reaction.
“No, no! It’s nothing!”
“I see. Well, then. Let’s go to my room.”
“W-Wait, Senior!?”
She grabbed my hand and led me. I hastily slipped on some sandals.
We went down the stairs and crossed the street.
“W-Wait. Is this…?”
“Yes. I moved in yesterday.”
She pointed to the building right in front of me, which I had always called “The Fancy Building.”
“S-So, you moved in yesterday?”
“Yes. I figured we could go to school together, and return together, too. So after lunch yesterday, I went to the student office to change my address.”
Suddenly, everything clicked. That’s why she had been walking in the same direction as me yesterday without any sign of surprise.
“But that’s pretty fast, right? I thought moving in would take a little more time.”
“I don’t have that many things, and yesterday, I didn’t have any classes, so I was just free while you were in class.”
Still, her ability to act quickly is pretty impressive. Senior sure is energetic.
“Well, let’s go! You have class second period, right? Let’s eat and take our time afterward.”
“Y-Yes.”
Honestly, I was still confused, but I felt much better knowing it wasn’t all a dream. That feeling far outweighed everything else.
It seemed like our lives were going to continue together.
“Oh, right. I’ll be a little late because I have something for the club.”
“Something?”
“Yeah, we’re deciding teams for the upcoming inter-club sports competition.”
“Really? That’s more important than me?”
“S-Sorry! Please forgive me! I’ll make it up to you!”
Oh, no. The weight of her love…
And yet, I somehow felt like I wanted to stay with her. It’s strange.
We reached her room.
“Wow… this place is huge.”
Her room was at least twice the size of mine. The furniture and carpet had a chic feel, so much more stylish than my place.
“Make yourself at home. I’ll set the table.”
As we passed through the entryway, I couldn’t help but wonder how much the rent was for this place. It probably cost more than twice what mine did.
“Alright, let’s eat.”
“Yes!”
Breakfast was the quintessential Japanese morning meal: grilled fish, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. The taste was, of course, fantastic.
“Ahh, thanks for the meal.”
“You’re welcome. Was the taste to your liking?”
“Yes. It was perfect. I’ll wash the dishes.”
I stood up, but just then, my phone rang.
“Oh, a call?”
“Seems like it.”
I stepped out into the hallway to answer.
“Uhana! It’s a disaster!”
I didn’t recognize the number, but the voice immediately made me realize who it was.
“Eh? President? What’s going on? You sound so panicked.”
“It’s Isaka and Kurumiya! And almost all the second and third years!”
“What?! What happened?”
The president took a deep breath, and I felt the anxiety building up.
“Do you remember the party the other day? Do you remember what was served?”
“Uh, I remember… fried chicken, skewered pork, horse sashimi… Wait! No way!”
“Yeah, you get it now. It’s because of that!”
“Is that… no way!”
“Yeah. Raw oysters.”
I knew it! I probably avoided them since I was with my senior.
“So, what are we going to do? The sports competition is this Saturday!”
Today was Tuesday. We had time, but not a lot. We still had to choose teams and prepare strategies.
“Yeah, the situation is really bad. So, we’re having an emergency meeting right after lunch.”
“Got it! We’ll figure something out!”
“I’m glad I called you.”
The call ended abruptly.
“What happened? Rei-kun?”
“Oh, Senior…”
I must’ve raised my voice because she peeked her head out of the door, looking concerned.
“The sports competition’s in a bit of trouble.”
“Really? What happened?”
“Yeah. Looks like most people got sick from the oysters.”
“Is that even possible? The restaurant served them, right?”
“Yeah, they were raw oysters.”
“Well, that makes sense. What kind of events are in the competition?”
“Uh, there’s soccer, softball, and mixed doubles tennis…”
“I’ll join.”
My senior spoke with surprising determination.
“Eh?”
“I’ll join the mixed doubles.”
“Really? That would be great, but why?”
“Rei-kun, think about it. If you’re paired with another girl in the mixed doubles, how do you think I’ll feel?”
“Eh? You’ll get angry, right?”
She quietly shook her head.
“No. I wouldn’t get angry.”
“Then what will happen?”
“…I’d die.”
“Woah…”
This is heavy.
“So, the only way for us to stay together is if we do this.”
“I… I see…”
Ah, there goes my social life. My senior’s love is serious.
“Alright. Let’s go. We need to check the situation soon.”
“Yes. Let’s go.”
And so, my senior and I headed to university together.
What will happen to the sports competition!?
