Episode 7: Those Who Give Long Explanations Die Quickly
At our university, there’s an old building that’s no longer used—what we call the “Old School Building.”
The place, known as Building No. 1, is where, during summer vacation, sports clubs often go for ghost-hunting challenges, and during breaks, it serves as a popular spot for couples to sneak off for secret meetings.
Now, the problem area is on the basement floor, beyond the “No Entry” tape.
“Hey, hey, a date in a place like this? And with three people? Ha, if it’s a threesome, go do it somewhere else.”
A man stood as the gatekeeper. He had a shaved head and a small mustache. He was muscular, though not quite as much as Shinji, and wore a tank top.
“…I’ll smash your skull.”
“Captain, calm down. Let’s hear him out first.”
The Captain was on the verge of exploding, his fists clenched tightly, his beautiful face twisted in anger as he ground his teeth.
“I know your boss is here. I’m not blind.”
“Boss? Ha, that’s a conversation I can’t have. Because…”
“I see. In that case, I have no business with you.”
In an instant, the Captain’s slender arm moved like a snake, and he struck the man’s neck.
“Ugh…hah.”
Like a puppet with its strings cut, the large man collapsed, kicking up dust around him.
“Let’s go, Unohana, Shion.”
“Yes.”
“…”
“Senpai?”
Senpai seemed absent-minded, which was understandable. After witnessing such a masterful technique right before her, she was probably still processing it.
“I’m sorry. When I heard Unohana Shion, I imagined something different…”
“Ah, I see.”
“Enough chit-chat, let’s go.”
The basement was damp and musty. I could hear water dripping somewhere, and it felt like something was crawling at my feet.
As we walked down the hall, I saw that the light was on in a room at the end of it.
Without hesitation, the Captain opened the door.
“I’ll leave this to you. Time for a little revenge. Be ready, you crafty craft club!”
“Eh!? What the hell?! Where’s the lookout?!”
As soon as we entered, two men who had been sitting in the front jumped up. One had a golden mohawk, and the other, for some reason, was wearing a skirt. Quite the characters.
“Wait. You guys.”
A low, heavy voice came from the back. It was the man seated at the farthest desk, dressed in an outfit reminiscent of a 1900s rock star, with frilly sleeves and, honestly, an outfit that could be described as… unique.
“It’s been a while, Anzai. Since the club wars, right? And the guy next to you… his name is Unohana Rei, right? Two notorious individuals from this university—what brings you here?”
Huh? Why is this guy suddenly giving us a lecture? And… am I really considered a dangerous person? Could it be related to that incident with the soccer club?
“Hey, Rei-kun. Why is this guy starting with an explanation?”
“Yeah, I wonder. Maybe he has no friends and just wants someone to talk to?”
“I see. That’s… kind of sad.”
“No, that’s the vibe, right? And the beautiful woman on the far left!”
The man pointed directly at Senpai. I instinctively stepped in front of her, ready to protect her if anything happened.
“Honestly, you’re totally my type! Please go out with me!”
What is this idiot saying?
“──Die.”
Well, that was predictable. Senpai is ruthless when it comes to rude people…
“Enough of your nonsense, Nikaido. You’re going to pay for what you just did.”
Ah, so this guy is Nikaido. I think I’ve heard that name from the Captain before.
“What do you mean, ‘pay’? As you can see, we’re just diligently working on our crafts today. Oh, by the way, Anzai, I made you an outfit that would suit you.”
With that, Nikaido pulled out a skin-tight catsuit. Given the Captain’s perfect legs, it would probably look great on her. Well, to be honest, it was… pretty sexy.
“I’ll kill you, you bastard.”
“Just kidding. But as for your so-called ‘crime,’ I really have no clue what you’re talking about.”
It sounded like a lie, but somehow, it didn’t feel like one.
The Captain seemed to think so too, as she placed her hand on her chin and began to think.
“Ha! If Nikaido says so, then you’re the ones who’ll have to settle things!”
The two men, who had been silent until now, started cracking their knuckles.
“Stop. Anzai is a skilled fighter despite his delicate appearance. You guys won’t win. And the guy over there, Unohana, is called ‘the Monster.’ He’s from the second club war last year. Even if you added me to the mix, we wouldn’t stand a chance.”
Wait, what? Unohana is that strong? I had no idea. I didn’t know “Monster” was a nickname that could be given to anyone other than a high school baseball player.
Also, this explanation is way too long.
“So, go home. This place…”
That’s when it happened. Something resembling a small package fell from the ceiling with a soft thud.
It seemed the “thing” we were after had already been planted in the room.
“!! Run, you bastards!”
“!!”
The Captain, quick to react, bolted like a rabbit.
I grabbed Senpai’s hand and followed her out of the room, just barely managing to escape. But the only ones who made it out were me, Senpai, the Captain, and the two guys with the mohawk and the skirt.
“Ughhhhh!”
From inside, a deep, guttural scream echoed.
“Dammit! Nikaido, protect us!”
“Dammit! If I had been more careful…”
A foul stench, similar to the one in our clubroom, began to leak through the gap in the door.
“Alright. For now, let’s assume their innocence has been proven. Let’s head back to the first floor. There’s no reason to die over this.”
“Yeah, you’re right. It’s just the smell. Sorry, Senpai, for suddenly grabbing your hand.”
“…”
“Senpai?”
Senpai was staring at our hands, still connected, with a somewhat blissful expression. I could have let go, but you never know when something might happen again.
“Are you okay?”
“Y-yeah. Sorry, I was just surprised by how forceful you were.”
“I’m glad to hear that. Let’s go, we’ll get away from the smell soon. Let’s go up.”
We climbed the stairs. We left behind the mohawked guy and the one in the skirt, who were sobbing on the ground, and made our way back to the first floor.
“Oh, speaking of which, Captain.”
“Huh? What?”
“Why are these guys doing activities in a place like this? I’ve been wondering, but never had the chance to ask.”
“Ah, that’s simple. They’re embarrassed by the fact that they’re doing crafts with that appearance. They should just do what they like somewhere they can be comfortable.”
“Yeah, I guess so.”
I kind of understood where they were coming from. It’s like being interrupted while doing something personal, and someone opens the door without knocking—it would be awkward and embarrassing.
“Can I ask something too?”
Next, Senpai spoke up.
“Huh? What is it, Shion?”
“Earlier, you mentioned the ‘Club Wars.’ What was that about?”
“Ah, uh… well…”
As soon as she asked, the Captain panicked, his brown eyes darting nervously.
“And why was Rei-kun called a ‘monster’?”
Senpai continued, her gaze now a little angry.
“That… well… ugh. I’ll explain next time. I promise. Can we just… talk about it later?”
After a moment of searching for words, the Captain let out a sigh of resignation.
Well, it’s not exactly a story that makes you feel good sharing. Even I would be embarrassed if someone insisted I explain it.
“…Alright. I’ll let it slide for today.”
Though Senpai didn’t seem fully convinced, she gave up pressing for an explanation for now.
“So, what do we do now, Captain? We still haven’t caught the culprit. And the main suspect is now the victim.”
“Yeah, you’re right. I guess we’ll just have to move on. Okay, let’s head to the next place!”
We left the old school building and headed toward the auditorium to meet with the second suspect—the School Lunch Research Club. But…
“Ugh! It stinks! They’ve been hit here too.”
“Not here too.”
“I was kind of curious about the School Lunch Research Club…”
Next, the third suspect: the Anime and Manga Research Club. But even there…
“Ugh, I think I’m starting to get used to this smell.”
“Unohana, your nose must be broken. Go to the bathroom and clean it.”
“Anime and Manga Research Club… This kind of club exists here?”
Next, next, next! The fourth suspect…
“Nothing here either, they’ve been hit too.”
“Dammit, the culprit… Are they planning to make every club at this school their enemy?”
“Rei-kun, what do you want for dinner tonight?”
In the end, we visited every suspicious club, but we found nothing, and they had all suffered the same fate.
The three of us sat at a terrace table in the cafeteria to summarize the situation.
“Ugh, what should we do? At this rate, it’s even possible the sports tournament will be canceled.”
“That’s not going to happen. The culprit probably didn’t intend for that. After all, the clubs that were hit are the top ones in the sports tournament. The smaller or newer clubs are unaffected.”
“So, the culprit must be trying to gain an upper hand in the power struggles between clubs, using this as a tactic.”
The sports tournament was such a huge event for the clubs that the results here were basically a reflection of the power dynamics for the entire year.
“Anyway, let’s head home for today. It’s almost 6 PM. Most clubs are probably already cleaning up by now.”
“Yeah, you’re right.”
“Rei-kun, let’s stop by the supermarket on the way home. We’ll decide what to have for dinner there.”
“Got it, Senpai.”
As we got up, just as the Captain was about to take a step forward, I caught a glimpse of something yellow in the corner of my eye.
“Captain! Watch out!”
“Unohana!?”
Without thinking, I pushed the Captain out of the way. However, I couldn’t avoid it in time and ended up stepping on it hard with my heel.
“Ugh!”
At that moment, my foot slipped, as if losing all friction.
It was…..
The trap that was aimed at the Captain—a banana peel.
