Episode 52: The Promised Breakfast and Rei’s Past
“Morning buffet.” What an elegant phrase. Yet in reality, it wasn’t all that refined. After returning from our walk and reuniting with the club president in our room, the three of us headed straight to the breakfast venue.
The space was a massive hall, nearly the size of a small gymnasium. Rows of long tables were lined with silver trays filled with an abundance of scrambled eggs, bacon, and a variety of other dishes.
“Are there any specific rules for hotel breakfasts like this?” I asked as we each took a seat at a four-person table. Having never experienced something like this before, I was clueless.
“Did you know, Rei? People call this a buffet, but technically, it isn’t.” “Oh?”
“A buffet, in Japanese, refers to a stand-up dining style. This, on the other hand, is closer to what’s called a Viking breakfast.”
“What?!” What a deception. I had expected a buffet.
“Rei-kun, you shouldn’t let it bother you too much. The terms are often mixed up in Japan.”
“Hmm. Still, it feels a bit complicated.” It was like realizing the adorable hamster you’d been doting on was just a regular rat. A bittersweet kind of disappointment.
“Let’s go grab some drinks.” Just as Shion-senpai said that—
“****? ****!” A foreign language. Not Japanese. Probably tourists. “This… isn’t good.”
“Huh? Wait, what?!” The tourists had begun piling ridiculous amounts of food onto their plates. No way a single person could eat that much.
“You jerks!” I felt my temper flare. This wasn’t right. “This… is a battle we need to take seriously.”
I stood up, determined to right this injustice. Marching toward the offenders with purpose, I confronted them.
“Hey, hey, hey! You’re breaking the rules, okay?” “***? ****!” I had no idea what they were saying.
Ah. This reminded me of that meme that was trending a while back—the one with the goat. Why wasn’t it a cat, though?
Anyway— “Okay, okay? Too much, you take too much!” “???” They tilted their heads in confusion, clearly not understanding me.
These jerks—are they playing dumb? “Rules. You need to follow them, okay?”
“???” They seemed even more bewildered, glancing at each other. Oh no. From their perspective, I must seem like a lunatic spouting nonsense.
“Alright then, it’s a fight! Okay, I’m ready to take you on!” Rolling up my sleeves, I prepared for a showdown.
But then— “***?” “What are you doing?!”
Instead of throwing a punch, one of them handed me a plate of food.
“What…?” Were they offering it to me? “Was I… mistaken?”
A kinder world. Relieved, I reached out for the offered plate—
“Ah?” But just as I did, they pulled the plate away. And then they smirked.
“!!” And so began my verbal battle with the foreigners.
Meanwhile, back at the table At the table where Shion and Mariri sat—
You…!” “***っ“I forgot to mention, but our plan includes a set breakfast.”
Before them was an array of dishes. Croissants, soup, various jams, boiled eggs, and a teapot with tea bags neatly set.
“I hope he doesn’t start a fight. He gets heated so quickly, you know?” “That’s part of his charm, though.”
“Yeah, true.” “While we’re waiting for Rei-kun to come back, how about you tell me how you and Rei-kun first met? Or about that time you caused a massive fight?”
“Oh, um, sure, I guess. Just… don’t tell anyone, okay? It’s not exactly a proud story.”
Mariri began to speak slowly and hesitantly. It was a story that began about a year and a half ago. When Rei joined the tennis club. It was a story about a person named Rei Ubara.
