- Chap 14 - The Cursed City: Uncovering the Dark Secrets of Divine Mana - Heroes
Amaterasu shared with us her extensive knowledge of the city’s history, as she was a demon goddess with access to stories that the government kept hidden from the general public. The city had once been the center of scientific progress, dedicated to studying a rare form of mana known as Divine mana. This type of mana was different from the standard mana used throughout the continent and was rumored to have the power to even resurrect the dead.
After years of research, the scientists managed to obtain a sample of the Divine mana and attempted to test it on a guinea pig, which turned out to be the girl I had saved. However, something went terribly wrong, and the mana quickly spiraled out of control, infecting the entire city. Once a thriving metropolis, it became a desolate wasteland.
Amaterasu’s knowledge of the city’s history was limited, and she had never seen the city before in its current state. “You have to kill this girl. You’re to blame for this,” the leader declared coldly.
My heart skipped a beat at his words, and I exchanged a nervous glance with the others. “Where’s your morals? I would never kill a girl,” I protested.
“I wouldn’t be S-Rank if I had that kind of weakness. Do you think anyone in this world gets ahead by being soft?” The leader sneered at my words.
Amaterasu, who had been silent until now, spoke up, “How did you make it to the S Rank? It wasn’t by force, was it?”
Stella, who was always curious, chimed in, “I’m also curious. How did you become the leader?”
“I’m sure there’s a good explanation, leader. Maybe killing isn’t the only solution.” I could feel the tension rising in the group, so I tried to calm the situation.
“You’re the one who said I got everything any other way!” He scoffed at my words.
I shook my head in frustration. “Yeah, yeah, whatever. Let’s just calm down, alright? We need to focus on finding a way out of here and worry about the rest later.”
Amelia, who always had a soothing presence, added, “That’s right. We can’t let our emotions cloud our judgment. We need to work together if we want to make it out of this cursed city alive.”
Amaterasu’s curiosity was piqued as she glanced over at the girl. The child looked fragile and vulnerable. Her tears tugged at Amaterasu’s heartstrings. “I don’t need your help to get where I am, I don’t owe anything, but who is that girl over there?” she asked, pointing at the young girl.
The girl barely whispered her name, “Maria.”
Amaterasu couldn’t shake the feeling of unease as she looked at the young girl called Maria. Her tears made her appear vulnerable, but something about her seemed off. “Why is she crying?” Amaterasu asked, her voice laced with suspicion.
Amelia explained once more, “She doesn’t remember anything. She’s scared and confused.”
Maria’s sobs only intensified at Amaterasu’s questioning gaze, making Amaterasu take a step back, feeling guilty for scaring the child. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you,” she said softly.
The leader scoffed at Amaterasu’s behavior. “What’s with you? You act like you’re afraid of her.”
“I don’t know her, and she doesn’t remember anything. We don’t even know if she can be trusted,” Amaterasu explained.
“I don’t think Maria is capable of any harm,” Stella said, trying to ease the tension.
But Amaterasu still had her doubts. She knew better than to trust someone so easily, especially in their current situation.
“Are you sure about that girl, Maria?” I asked Amaterasu, as we walked through the abandoned streets of the cursed city.
“I don’t know, something about her just doesn’t sit right with me. Did you notice how scared she was when she saw me?”
“Yeah, I did. But she’s just a lost child, we can’t be too quick to judge her.”
Amaterasu remained silent for a moment, deep in thought.
“I know, but we can’t let our guard down either. We don’t know what kind of dangers lurk in this city.”
With that we continued walking as Maria trailed behind us, visibly shaken. She kept looking over her shoulder, as if she was afraid we were going to hurt her.
“Maria, are you okay?” I asked her gently.
She nodded, but her eyes were filled with fear.
“Don’t worry, we won’t hurt you. We just want to help you,” I reassured her.
Amaterasu shot me a look, as if to say I was being too trusting. But I couldn’t help it, seeing Maria so scared broke my heart.
After a while, we decided to split up and explore the city on our own. The leader took his group one way, while I went with mine in another direction.
I couldn’t help but feel relieved to be away from the leader. He was always so confrontational and seemed to enjoy causing trouble.
As we walked, I kept an eye on Maria, making sure she was okay. She still seemed scared, but she was starting to relax a little.
I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off about her, but I didn’t want to jump to any conclusions. For now, all we could do was keep exploring the city and hope to find some answers.
Maria, the youngest of the group, clung tightly to my hand, her grip a combination of excitement and fear. Despite her outwardly brave demeanor, a lingering unease flickered in her eyes whenever Amaterasu drew near. It was evident that her past encounters with the powerful deity had left an indelible mark on her psyche. In search of solace and reassurance, she sought refuge in my presence, finding comfort amidst the bustling market. Meanwhile, Amaterasu and Stella playfully competed for my attention, each vying to stand at my side, their smiles filled with lighthearted rivalry.
Despite their small frames, their combined weight made it difficult for me to walk, and I found myself getting tired quickly. But as I looked down at their sweet faces, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for their company.
Amelia, our leader, walked ahead of us, keeping a watchful eye on our surroundings. She turned back every now and then to make sure we were all still together, her warm smile putting us all at ease.
Maria suddenly stumbled and almost fell, but Stella quickly caught her and pulled her back up. I couldn’t help but chuckle at their adorable display of sisterly affection.
As we walked through the city, Amelia kept a watchful eye on everyone, making sure we were all safe. Even though she had a tough exterior, I could tell she cared deeply for all of us.
Meanwhile, Amaterasu was clinging onto my arm, not wanting to let go. Her jealous and possessive side was showing, but I couldn’t help but find it adorable.
“Are you okay, Adam? You seem quiet,” Amelia said, breaking the silence.
I nodded, not wanting to upset Amaterasu any further.
But before I could say anything else, Amaterasu spoke up again. “He’s fine, just lost in thought. He’s mine, so don’t worry.”
I chuckled nervously, not wanting to upset her either. It was clear that Amaterasu was a yandere, and I didn’t want to be on her bad side.
Amelia must have sensed the tension between us because she stepped forward and patted my shoulder. “Don’t worry, we’re all friends here. We’ll make it through this adventure together.”
Her words were reassuring, and I felt a sense of comfort knowing that we had each other’s backs.
As we continued our journey, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for these girls who had become my friends. Even with Amaterasu’s possessive tendencies and Amelia’s tough exterior, I knew deep down they cared for me, and I cared for them too.
Then I heard footsteps approaching us.
I saw a tall man approaching us, his presence commanding attention. He carried himself with the grace and poise of a seasoned waiter, exuding an air of professionalism. A strange smile played upon his lips, a mix of friendliness and something unsettling. As his eyes met mine, I couldn’t help but feel a chill run down my spine. There was a glint of cruel pleasure in his gaze as he surveyed us, and I could sense an underlying hostility emanating from him.
“We’re on a mission,” I said, my voice surprisingly steady.
The man’s eyes flickered over us, his expression growing even more hostile. “You’re the group that’s with that rogue adventurer, aren’t you?” he snarled. “My leader wants to see you. Where is he?”
“We split up to investigate the city,” I replied, trying to keep my tone neutral.
The man sneered. “Fine, follow me.”
I exchanged a quick glance with Amaterasu, who had an unmistakable look of possessiveness in her eyes. I knew that I had to be careful around her, but at the same time, I refused to be cowed by her jealousy.
As we followed the man through the deserted streets, my mind raced with questions. Who was this leader that he kept talking about? And what did he want with us?
But despite the uncertainty, I refused to show any sign of fear. I had faced danger before, and I wasn’t about to back down now.
As we approached a looming castle, I could feel the tension in the air growing thicker by the second. The man led us through a hallway filled with armed women, their eyes flickering over us with suspicion.
Amaterasu’s grip on my arm tightened, and I could feel her jealousy radiating off her like a palpable force. But I refused to be intimidated by her possessiveness.
And as we stepped into the main hall, my eyes met those of a young boy sitting on a throne, his gaze cold and calculating. I knew that we were in for a rough ride, but I was ready for whatever lay ahead.
“So you’re the hero, huh?” The words dripped from the boy’s lips with a mocking tone, his gaze fixed upon me. His stature was noticeably shorter than average, but it did little to diminish his audacity. Jet-black hair framed his face, lending an air of rebelliousness to his already defiant expression.
Amaterasu’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “He is mine,” she declared possessively, her voice laced with a hint of madness.
Stella stepped forward, her body tense with jealousy. “He’s my master,” she snapped, her eyes locking onto the boy’s with a fierce glare.
Amelia and Maria stood awkwardly beside me, clearly uncomfortable with the tension in the room.
At these words, the boy’s anger flared, fueled by the group’s possessive behavior. “Everyone is equal, you and the leader who left me for dead,” he seethed.
With a wave of his hand, the boy released a blast of magic, hurling it directly towards me. Instinctively, I raised my sword and felt it react on its own, expertly parrying the attack.
The other subordinates quickly joined in the attack, and I watched in amazement as Stella expertly protected me while Amaterasu unleashed a devastating area attack.
Amaterasu’s attack froze the room, leaving only Stella’s armor made of lightning crackling with energy. Maria and Amelia jumped in to shield me from the onslaught.
Despite the odds, we emerged victorious, our enemies lying defeated on the ground.
“Now then, why don’t you tell me about your research?” I asked the boy, brushing off the dust from my clothes.
“Very well. We are searching for something that will increase my power and allow me to take revenge for the death of my beloved sister…” he replied.
Amaterasu interrupted him with a twisted grin. “That explains why you work in this cursed city because you lost someone dear to you. You know what? She’ll never come back,” Amaterasu said with a mocking tone.
The boy’s face twisted with rage. “Shut up!” he screamed.
Without warning, he snapped his fingers. A weird fluctuation of mana swept through the room as a magic circle appeared below us. From the spatial fluctuation surrounding us I could infer it was a teleportation spell. Alas, by the time we could do anything, the magic circle bloomed and sent us all flying in different directions.
As I frantically searched the area for any sign of the others, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong. The air around us was thick with a palpable sense of danger, and the eerie silence was only broken by the sound of our panicked breathing.
Maria grabbed my arm, her eyes wide with fear. “What’s happening? Where are we?” she whispered.
“I don’t know,” I replied, my own voice shaking. “But we need to find the others and get out of here.”
