- Chap 13 - The Clash of Arrogance: When Pride Becomes a Weapon - Heroes
Our training started off with easy monsters, and as we progressed, the more seasoned adventurers stayed behind to observe our skills.
“A bunch of weaklings,” Amaterasu muttered, sizing up our opponents.
“They may not look like much, but they are considered the most promising group of adventurers in this realm,” Amelia replied.
“Then why were they defeated so easily?” Stella asked, clearly unimpressed.
“Perhaps they were holding back,” I offered, trying to give them the benefit of the doubt.
“Even I thought it was strange,” Tom chimed in with a hint of suspicion in his voice.
The leader looked at us skeptically, his arms crossed. “They may look weak, but don’t be fooled.” “They’re not easy to kill,” he said, his voice laced with a glimmer of respect.
Amaterasu’s eyes narrowed in anger. “Because you are a bunch of weaklings!” she shouted, her voice echoing through the training grounds.
The leader raised an eyebrow. “Who do you think you are? You crazy B****th,” he retorted.
Amaterasu’s anger was palpable now, and I could feel the tension rising. “You dare insult me?” she growled.
I could see the leader tensing up, preparing for a fight. “If you want to fight, then come at me!” he challenged.
Before things could escalate further, a monster suddenly appeared. Tom drew his sword and charged at it, while Amelia summoned her magic power. In mere seconds, the monster lay dead at our feet.
The leader was stunned by how quickly we had defeated the monster. “Huh? “How—?” he stammered, looking back at us in disbelief.
We stood there, grinning at him. “Well done, adventurers. Now, let’s go train some more,” Amaterasu said, her voice tinged with satisfaction.
The leader’s face contorted with rage as he charged forward to attack the monster. But before he could reach him, the monster countered with a swift attack, throwing him off balance. Amaterasu reacted quickly, launching herself towards him and using her magic to fend off the monster. The leader stumbled and fell, but Amaterasu caught him before he hit the ground, preventing him from getting hurt.
Amaterasu’s eyes sparkled with even more confidence as she looked at him. She already felt superior to him, but now, after saving her life, she felt even more so. The leader, on the other hand, looked humiliated and defeated.
“They’re weak, just as I said earlier,” Amaterasu stated with a tone of superiority, making sure that her words were heard by us all, including the party leader.
I quickly interjected, hoping to prevent her from provoking them further. “Hold on, Amaterasu; let’s not jump to conclusions. Maybe they were holding back during the fight.”
Stella, however, was not convinced. “Their weapons look pretty good, don’t they? And those clothes, too. They probably bought them in town with their parents’ money. What kind of training do they have if they can’t beat monsters like that? Are they really that strong, or just lucky? Do they always get handouts?” Her eyes glinted with fierce determination as she glared at the party, daring them to prove her wrong.
The leader of the opposing group, clearly fed up with our teasing, finally spoke up. “Enough of your taunts. If you think you’re so tough, why don’t you prove it in battle?”
Amaterasu, not one to back down from a challenge, responded by picking up her sword. “Fine. Let’s stop wasting time and settle this once and for all,” she declared
As Amaterasu unleashed her magic, a brilliant light enveloped the area, causing the leader to react in alarm. However, his own feeble attempt to retaliate was swiftly and effortlessly overcome by the sheer power of Amaterasu’s spell.
The leader, clearly infuriated by his defeat, turned his rage towards us, shouting insults and belittling our skills. His words were like daggers, striking at our pride and questioning our worth as S-Rank adventurers.
With a steely determination in her voice, Stella spoke out against the leader’s insult. Her words cut through the air like a blade, carrying with them an unshakable conviction.
“I would forgive an insult to the Ice Queen, but insulting my master is unforgivable,” she declared, her words ringing out like a clarion call. With a fierce intensity, she unleashed her mana, her power exceeding even that of Amaterasu’s.
The leader was visibly shaken by Stella’s display of strength; his apprehension was palpable. He had clearly underestimated our abilities, and now he was faced with the full might of our combined Amaterasu and Stella powers.
If this keeps up, it might turn into a slaughter. The leader wouldn’t even have a chance.
The leader’s group, which had been quiet up to that point, prepared to fight, but before the fight started, an extremely strong aura covered the surroundings.
A grotesque creature appeared, its form was not described with any other word. Its limbs were so long that it could touch everyone in our party. It also had a huge tail, and it was bigger than we thought it would be.
The monster bared its teeth, exposing its sharp fangs as though it was about to launch an attack. In response, Amelia urged everyone to end the encounter quickly, prompting Tom to try and use his magic to stop the monster. However, his attempt failed to activate, causing Amaterasu to chastise him for forgetting to release his mana.
Amelia, on the other hand, remained calm and whispered softly that everything was under control. Despite this, Tom continued to feel uneasy, as if his mind had been distorted in some way, making it difficult for him to release his mana. Amaterasu dismissed Tom’s concerns as paranoia, instructing him to focus and release his mana immediately.
I released the magic from my sword that I used to defend myself against the deformed monster. Amelia cast another spell and Stella’s magic activated as well.
The magic released by Amelia drowned the enemy completely while Stella’s magic targeted a single limb of the monster.
During the battle, I started to feel a strange energy being emitted from the monster.
“I’m sorry, let me try something else.”
I used the knowledge Amaterasu gave me to sense the monster’s power.
“What the hell are you doing, let’s kill him soon.” the leader yelled.
“Don’t you dare move, if my Master said to wait, then wait,” Stella yelled.
“That monster, his mana is eating away at him!”
I’d never seen anything like this, the mana was doing harm to his body, even I could see it.
“Hmm, I see,” Amaterasu interrupted with an explanation as she solemnly provided a nonchalant gaze at the monster and the city. “This city, I should have discovered it sooner, the city cursed by God, or shall I say, the first city to research Divine Mana.”
“And what does it matter? That monster has no salvation, he’s cursed,” the leader shouted.
This guy was starting to piss me off.
“Not necessarily,” Amaterasu replied, “If one can manipulate Divine Mana and stabilize it in the user’s body…”
“Who would be capable of that?”
“My master,” Stella replied in utter confidence.
“Yes, my darling does that to the little dog,” Amaterasu said in an insulting tone while praising her.
“Shut up, I am not some pet!”
“Oh really? Well, if the pet is going to get so riled up, perhaps we should end this quickly, don’t you think?” Amaterasu asked her.
I felt as though time was running out. I had to act fast.
The deformed monster moved its claw in the direction of the leader but before it could do so, Stella used the magic she had released previously. It wrapped around the enemy’s arm and severed it.
“Damn it.” Amelia screamed.
It seemed that Stella’s magic had failed to work properly against this monster. The monster’s limb grew back and attacked the leader from behind. He tried to evade with his shield but failed, the monster’s claws penetrated his chest.
“No! I don’t want to die!”
His face went red, he was clearly trying to use his last remaining mana to heal himself, he was unable to escape any longer.
“That is your fault! You are responsible for your own death, so you better die properly, or else you’ll just get in my way,” Amaterasu shouted in an annoyed tone.
Her words were so cold-hearted that the leader lost his last remaining shred of self-esteem. He turned pale, like someone who just heard a bad joke. His shoulders slumped as he dropped his weapon and fell to his knees, then his body convulsed violently, and he vomited blood.
The rest of the party looked at us in shock.
“Don’t just stand there! Kill it now!” Amelia screamed.
Stella was the first to react. She used her magic to attack the creature. I saw how it tried to defend itself, but her spell hit it straight on, severing another limb.
The leader looked at Amelia in desperation, begging for help but all Amelia could do was watch while screaming.
I had to do something, I didn’t want anyone to die, but I also had to save the monster.
I implemented the knowledge I acquired from Amaterasu and Stella in order to stabilize the monster’s divine mana. To accomplish this, I had to establish a connection between my own mana and the monster’s mana. The monster’s divine mana had been causing extensive damage to its body, preventing it from stabilizing. In order to prevent the divine mana from spiraling out of control, I created a connection that resembled the one I had previously established with Stella. This time, however, I acted as a conduit that could prevent the divine mana from becoming uncontrollable.
As the monster’s mana began to stabilize, the area around us began to feel odd. We experienced a strange mixture of heat and cold until the stabilization process was complete.
As a result of the successful stabilization of the Divine Mana, the monstrous entity transformed back into its original form – that of a regular girl. The process of stabilization had effectively reversed the harmful effects of the chaotic Divine Mana, restoring the girl to her true self.
