Chapter 21: I Suddenly Got a Call from Nee-san

The day I exchanged that kind of promise with Kirisaki-senpai, after school. Since today was a day without club activities, I was walking home alone, taking my time and relaxing.

Compared to the Nee-san from the original world, her personality had become a bit more sloppy or careless, but she still sent me messages on LIME because she worried about me living alone. “Hellooo? Narumi-neesan? What’s up?”

『Ah, H-Haru-kun! Sorry for calling at this time in the evening! Um, if you can… Could you go to my apartment right now, gather the electricity and water bills on my desk, and pay them at the convenience store for me…?』

“…Huh? W-what do you mean?”

『W-well, actually… The due date for those utility bills is today… If I don’t pay them today, my room’s electricity and water will all get shut off…』

Her request was, of all things, asking me to pay her utility bills at the convenience store. I had the spare key to her apartment in case of emergencies, so I could go there even when she wasn’t home. But I never imagined I’d end up using that key for paying her utility bills.

“…Wait, but if it’s still today, can’t you go pay for them yourself? It’s only evening, so you should still have time if you’re going to pay it at the convenience store, right?”

『W-well, that’s… Normally I’d already be able to leave work by now, but my boss suddenly told me to join a meeting that’s starting right now… So I’ll be home really late tonight… That’s why I was hoping you could pay them for me…』

“Ah, I see. Well, I know your job keeps you busy every day. But, like, more importantly, how did the due date end up being today without you noticing? Why didn’t you pay earlier?”

『Ugh… T-that’s because… I hadn’t checked my mailbox at all until today…』

“Eh—wait, what!? C’mon! That’s way too sloppy! You were more put-together back in high school! What are you doing, Nee-san!?”

She was even sloppier than I had imagined, so I properly scolded her.

『Uu… I-I’m sorry, Haru-kun…I-I know it’s really not acceptable as an excuse, but… Work has been so busy… And when I get home I’m always so exhausted I can’t think about anything and just fall asleep right away… So I kept forgetting to check the mailbox…』

“Ah… Nee-san…”

When I said that, Narumi-neesan answered in a very sad tone. From how she’d described things so far, her workplace sounded extremely tough. I’d heard she often had to work unpaid overtime until the last train. Having so many days where she couldn’t get home until the last train…That really sounded awful.

And now that I think about it… Nee-san really did seem to be in a terrible situation too… She was so exhausted from working every day that she was falling apart. “Yeah, of course. Back when we lived in the countryside, Mom was always busy with work, so I cooked every day. So today I’ll make dinner for you!”

『Eh, t-that makes me really happy, but… I don’t know what time I’ll be home today…』

“It’s fine, it’s fine. I’ll make something that still tastes good when reheated. Ah, but tell me what time you expect to be home, okay? I’ll start cooking based on that.”

『H-Haru-kun… Okay! Got it! Thank you, Haru-kun! I’ll try to finish work as fast as I can and head home!』

“Okay. Good luck at work, Narumi-neesan.”

『Mm, thank you!』

And with that, my conversation with Narumi-neesan ended. So I headed immediately toward her apartment to take care of the convenience store payments, and then make dinner for her. 

Alright! Today, I’ll make something she likes!
