Chapter 39: Family Outing
I woke up to the rhythmic chopping sound of a knife. When I opened my eyes, the morning sun was shining through, and birds perched on the trees were chirping.
“Is it morning already?”
“Good morning, Glenn. Breakfast will be ready soon.”
Downstairs, my mom was cooking. It seemed like breakfast was going to be miso soup, rice, and grilled fish.
Kue, the family pet, was hovering nearby, hoping to get some fish.
“Could you wake up Dad for me?”
“Sure. Let’s go together, Kue.”
“Qwe?”
Agreeing, I and Kue headed to my parents’ bedroom. Inside, my dad was sleeping soundly, looking very comfortable, and Kuu was fast asleep on my dad’s stomach.
“Dad, wake up!”
“Hmm… another 30 minutes.”
This isn’t going to work. There’s no sign of him waking up. No choice, I have a powerful helper here. Let’s get his help.
“Kue, I’ll give you some fish later, can you wake Dad up?”
“!!… Qwe!”
Kue responded enthusiastically and jumped onto the bed to start patting Dad’s face. But Dad didn’t seem bothered.
In fact, he seemed to enjoy it.
“Hmm… Kue, that tickles.”
“Qwe! Qwe!… Qwe”
“Zzz… Zzz… Ugh!”
Dad made a funny noise. Kue must have decided that just patting wouldn’t do the trick and sat on Dad’s face like he was trying to warm an egg.
“…Bwha!”
“Qwe!”
“Well done, Kue. I’ll ask Mom for some fish for you later, okay?”
“Qwee!”
Dad must have been quite uncomfortable because he suddenly sat up. Kuu, who had been sleeping on Dad’s stomach, rolled down to Dad’s feet but was still asleep.
Kue, happy about the promise of fish, was flapping his paws joyfully.
“Good morning, Dad. Breakfast is ready.”
“Uh, okay. Let’s go downstairs with Kuu too.”
Dad got out of bed and, carrying the sleeping Kuu, headed to the living room. Kue and I followed them downstairs.
“Mom’s cooking is delicious. Glenn, you need to eat properly in the morning too.”
“Then Dad needs to wake up earlier too.”
“Haha! You got me there!”
With that, Dad laughed off the playful jab. As Dad and I were chatting, Lucina also woke up. Unlike yesterday, she wasn’t in her underwear but was wearing regular pajamas.
“Good morning~”
“Look, the food’s ready, so Lucina should eat too.”
With Lucina up, the four of us had breakfast together. Kue was enjoying the fish I gave him, and Kuu was eating his usual meal.
“Hey! Since we’re all here, why don’t we all go out somewhere?”
“That sounds great. I’ll prepare a picnic then.”
Dad’s spontaneous suggestion was quickly accepted, and Mom started preparing the picnic. The plan for the day was set in motion at a rapid pace.
…I’m used to it by now, but it’s all good.

“Alright! Let’s go!”
Dad was very enthusiastic as our whole family finished preparing and left the house. Mom made sure the door was locked before joining Dad and starting to walk. I carried Kuu, and Dad held Kue as we headed into the mountains.
“It feels nostalgic. We used to go out like this as a family back in the day.”
“It’s been a while since we went fishing, I wonder if I can still do it?”
“Don’t worry. Dad’s here, and I can teach a bit too. Kuu and Kue, you guys can swim as much as you want.”
“Quu!”
“Qwe!”
Both pets responded well. While I was petting Kuu, Mom looked back, hugged Dad’s arm, and said with a smile.
“I’ll be fine since Dad will teach me. Glenn, could you help Lucina?”
“That makes sense. It’s been a while for Lucina too, right?”
“The last time I did it was about a year ago, so I’m a bit nervous.”
“Don’t worry. I can help you out if you need it.”
“Thanks! Big brother.”
Lucina, with her hair in a side tail, smiled at me. Yeah, my little sister is really cute.
“Fufu. Then Dad, make sure to teach me properly.”
Mom whispered in Dad’s ear with a gentle, teasing voice. Dad blushed a bit and said,
“Well, leave it to me!… Uh, I’d be happy if you could stand a bit further away, it’s embarrassing.”
“Fufu, no way.”
Then Mom squeezed the arm she was hugging even tighter, making Dad’s face turn even redder. Even though my parents look young, it feels a bit strange to see them being so affectionate.
“Our parents… they’re still the same.”
“Even when you weren’t around, brother, they were like this.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
It seems they were the same even when I wasn’t around. Well, it’s good they get along so well.
Lucina and I watched them with warm eyes as we followed along.

So, I really like this so far. It’s cheesy and full of the usual cliches but that’s fine. But if the writer wants any feedback I will say that this whole bit about him going back to his family would’ve been a lot better without the animals. Or at least make them normal dogs with names that aren’t annoying to read. Also, “Glenn” as a name for a protagonist in a fantasy world is a little … yaknow. Like if you wanted to go deep with the “average guy” thing then why not Johnny? It’s at least cool but still very common. Glenn is like.. my accountant or that dude in the IT department that you never talk to because you know a conversation with him would be akin to watching grass grow or paint dry without the mercy of the silence those two activities would provide.
