Chapter 40: Family Fishing Picnic
“Here we are!”
Just like Dad said, we reached a great spot for fishing. The stream here was as beautiful as before, with a small waterfall a bit further back.
“This brings back memories.”
I mumbled to myself. This was the place where we found Kuu and Kue a long time ago. They were in bad shape when we discovered them, so Dad and I quickly took them in.
Even after they recovered, we tried to find their parents for a while but couldn’t, so we decided to adopt them into our family.
“So, Lucina, can you bait the fishing rod?”
“Umm, can you do it for me, Big Brother?”
“Alright, just a moment. Kuu, Kue, you guys wait a bit, okay?”
“Quuu.”
“Qweee.”
The two pets looked eager to swim. It’s a bit sad to make them wait, but just a little longer. Meanwhile, I put bait on Lucina’s rod and then on mine.
Glancing over, I saw Dad was doing the same for Mom’s rod.
“Thanks, Dad.”
“It’s no big deal!”
They were as usual. With that, everyone was ready to fish. But first,
“Kuu, Kue, it’s okay to play, but stay away from this side because it’s dangerous. Come over here by getting out of the river and walking. Can you do that?”
“Quu!”
“Qwe!”
“Good, that’s the spirit. Now, go have fun!”
The two pets eagerly dove into the water and started swimming. Even though our bath at home is large, it’s probably still not enough for them. Once we saw that the pets had swum off to a distant spot, we began fishing.
“Let’s see what we can catch.”
“Big brother, did you also fish when you were away?”
“Yeah, maybe once every two months.”
“That’s quite frequent.”
We chatted casually while fishing, enjoying the sound of the waterfall and the birds singing. This is the real charm of fishing.
“By the way, are you using the mask I gave you?”
“…Y-Yes, I used it.”
“Why such a hesitant face?”
Oops, my expression must have given me away. I did use it, and it was helpful, but that mask, I’m not so sure about it.
“No, yeah, it was really helpful. Thanks, Lucina.”
“Fufuー. That mask is really cool, right?”
“…Yeah.”
“So, why the hesitant face again?”
It seems I’m making that uncertain face again. It’s hard not to show it.
“Oh? Lucina, you’ve got a bite.”
“Really? Oh, yes!”
Lucina’s rod bent sharply. She adjusted her grip and pulled hard on the rod.
“Wow, that’s a big one!”
“Mufufu!”
My sister proudly pulled up a fish that looked like an ayu. This one will go nicely with our dinner tonight.
“Look! I caught such a big fish!”
“Wow, Mom is really amazing!”
Dad and Mom were excited too. Mom was thrilled with the big fish she caught, and Dad was happy seeing her so joyful.
“Alright! I’m going to catch a lot too!”
“Go for it, Big Brother!”
Encouraged by Lucina, I got pumped up and grabbed my fishing rod again. As an older brother, I need to show some cool skills.
“Should we have lunch soon?”
“Yeah, sounds good.”
“What about it, big brother? Shall we go?”
“Yeah, let’s go.”
The clear reason why Dad and I were feeling down was that the women had caught plenty of fish while the men had caught none.
It’s strange, isn’t it? It’s like the fish are choosing who to bite.
“Dad, did you catch anything?”
“None. How about you, Glenn?”
“None here either.”
“…sigh.”
Dad and I looked at each other and then sighed heavily. Well, let’s eat something and move on.
“Kuu, Kue, it’s time to eat, come back!”
Dad called out loudly to Kuu and Kue, who were far away. They made a small sound in response and swam back to us.
“Alright, let’s eat.”
“Oh, sandwiches today. They look tasty.”
As Dad said, there were various sandwiches inside. Some had ham, others had strawberry jam spread on them, offering a nice variety.
“Yes, it’s delicious, Mom!”
“Oh, that’s great to hear. Dad, you like the one with strawberry jam, right?”
“Well, yeah. I can’t resist its sweet and sour taste. Kuu, Kue, is it good?”
“Quu! Quu!”
“Qwe! Qwe!”
Both pets seemed to enjoy their food too. Somehow, they can eat the same things as us without any problems. Then Lucina and I started eating too.
Lucina had a sandwich with ham, and I had a pork cutlet sandwich. Yeah, the rich sauce wrapped around the bread is the best.
“Ah, eating outside like this is really nice.”
“It is. By the way, Big Brother, how long are you staying?”
“Mm, I’m thinking of staying another day or two.”
“Really? Can’t you stay longer? At least a week, no, maybe a month?”
“Dad, if you push too hard, Glenn might get annoyed.”
“Uh, got it. But make sure you come back soon, okay?”
“I know. I’ll come back earlier next time.”
As we talked, we continued with our lunch. Meals with family really are the best.
