Chapter 38: At Home
“Oh? Glenn… you’re back?”
“Ah, I’m home, Mom.”
As I was lecturing Dad in the entranceway, a woman with golden very short hair approached.
That’s Seina Herbert, my mother.
She was probably in the middle of cooking. The kitchen smelled great, and she was wearing an apron.
“Glenn… lecturing again?”
“Yeah… look at this! Kuu and Kue have gotten so chubby!”
“Quu!”
“Qwe!”
I picked up the two pets again and held them out for my mom to see. They responded to her with energetic voices and raised their short arms.
“Well, they’re cute, so it’s okay, isn’t it?”
“Quu! Quu!”
“Qwe!”
That’s no good. I forgot that my mom is very laid-back. She tends to respond nonchalantly to things like this. The two pets are reacting lively to her voice.
“By the way, where’s Lucina?”
“She’s probably still sleeping in her room.”
Still sleeping? It’s almost evening. I’m not one to talk, but isn’t that too much sleep?
“She’ll probably wake up soon, so just relax.”
“Thanks, I will. Come on, Dad, let’s go.”
“Eh?… Are we good? You’re not angry anymore?”
Dad had been looking down, but when he heard my words, he looked up, puzzled, and asked.
“Yeah, I didn’t want to start lecturing right after I got back, and I’m not really mad.”
“Gl-Glenn!!”
“But! Please be careful not to overfeed them with snacks!”
“…Yes.”
My dad, looking like he was about to cry, tried to hug me as I spoke firmly to him. He became visibly downcast again. Holding the two pets, I headed towards the living room.
“Dinner’s ready.”
“It’s been a while since you had Mom’s cooking, right? Eat up!”
“It really has been a while… I’ve missed this.”
Mom had made pot-au-feu, a nostalgic dish she always used to make. As we all sat down at the table, a beautiful girl with wavy, aqua semi-long hair and wide eyes came down the stairs.
And she was yawning and in her underwear.
Lucina Herbert, my younger sister.
“Yawn… Eh? Big brother, you’re back?”
“I’m home, Lucina.”
Lucina froze in surprise when she saw me. But soon after, she noticed she was in her underwear and hurried back to her room.
“What’s with her rushing off like that?”
“Give her a break, Glenn. Lucina is a teenage girl after all.”
“…I see. Okay.”
Lucina is already 15. It’s that age when she might feel embarrassed about her body being seen by her siblings or rebelling against her parents.
Well, my only concern is that she doesn’t catch a cold.
“Welcome back, big brother.”
“Yeah. …Just remember, it gets cold at night recently, so be careful not to catch a cold.”
“…Yeah.”
When I gently pointed out her attire, she blushed and looked down. Then Dad clapped his hands.
“Look! It’s been a while since we’ve all had a meal together as a family!”
“Yes, it really has been.”
And with that, we all started eating. The gentle sweetness of the vegetables, the fat from the bacon, and the flavor of salt and pepper spread deliciously in my mouth.
“This is really good, Mom.”
“Oh, that’s great to hear.”
“How about you? Have you gotten used to living in the city?”
“Well, I’ve made quite a few friends, so I guess I’m used to it.”
“That’s good to hear. As long as you’re living well, that’s what matters.”
I’m more worried about Dad and the rest here, though. Why, you ask?
“What’s up?”
“Qwe! Qwe!”
Kue started chirping at Dad’s feet as if trying to say something.
“Do you want some pot-au-feu? Alright, just a little bit then.”
Dad then took a little bit of his pot-au-feu and put it in a small dish on the floor. Kue immediately started gobbling it up energetically.
“Is Mom’s cooking good?”
“Qwe!”
“Quu! Quu!”
“Huh? Kuu, you want some too? Just a little, okay?”
As you can see, Dad is really indulgent with the family. He can’t say no if asked, and he spoils everyone rotten.
When I said I was leaving the village, he tried so hard to convince me to stay, clinging to me and begging, “Don’t go!” It was really tough.
“Are you two enjoying it?”
“Quu!”
“Qwe!”
“That’s great! That’s great to hear!”
Watching the pets eat happily, Dad patted them with a pleased look on his face. It’s hard to get mad at him because you can tell he loves us so much.
Ah… I can’t help but sigh.
“Dad… try not to give them too much.”
“Ah! I know, I know!”
Does he really know, though? Well, it’s the usual, so it’s okay. We continue eating while talking about this.
“Well, now that we’ve eaten, maybe it’s time for a bath.”
“Oh? Lucina is in the bath right now.”
“Ah, is that so? Then I’ll wait a bit longer.”
The dishes are already done, so what should I do? Mom and Dad are relaxing and petting the two pets.
I guess I’ll do something until Lucina comes out. Glenn kept petting the two pets while waiting for Lucina to finish her bath.
“Phew… There’s nothing like a bath at home to relax.”
Our home bath is the best. It’s spacious, and I can stretch out my legs and relax. Our bath got bigger because our two pets often take baths, so Dad expanded it by himself.
I wanted a bigger bath too, and I thought it would be easier for them to swim in a larger space, so I helped with the renovations.
“The bath is free now.”
“Oh? Got it. Shall Kuu and Kue join me?”
“Quu!”
“Qwe!”
The two pets raised their little hands in response. Dad picked them up and headed to the bath.
“You must be tired today. Have a good rest.”
“Thanks, I will.”
I went to my room as Mom suggested. It hadn’t changed at all in two years. There was a bookshelf, a desk, and the magical tools and weapons I made were still at the corner.
The room was clean, maybe the family had been keeping it tidy.
I looked around the room, changed into comfortable clothes, got into bed, and quickly fell into a deep sleep.
