Chapter 20: A Day Off
[Glenn’s POV]
“Ah, I was so tired yesterday.”
I muttered to myself as I turned over in bed. As expected, the guild was a total mess yesterday. Well, that was still okay. I figured it would happen.
The real problem came after. Thanks to Spinner, my true identity was almost revealed, and I didn’t even get to enjoy any rice balls—it was a rough day.
“So, today is my day off.”
It’s an early day off today. I’ll do whatever I want, freely.
What should I do? Maybe go eat something tasty or maybe go fishing at the nearby river after a long time.
“Actually, this is starting to sound fun.”
Hmm, it’s a tough choice. All options are tempting.
“Alright, I’ve decided! I’ll go on a food tour today.”
I snapped my fingers, made up my mind, quickly changed, and left the inn.
“I wonder if there’s a new food stall around here.”
As I walked through town, I looked around. There were stalls selling skewered meats and salt-grilled fish.
Not many new stalls, though. Maybe I’ll just go to the usual ones.
“Hey, uncle, give me two of these skewers.”
“Hey, isn’t that Glenn? You off from the guild today?”
“It’s my day off. By the way, is there any place around here where I can grab something tasty but light?”
“If that’s what you’re looking for, there’s a great bakery if you turn right from here.”
“Oh, nice. I’ll check it out later.”
“Here you go, two skewers for you.”
“Thanks. I’ll leave the money here.”
“Come back again, alright?”
After buying two skewers of meat from the stall owner, I headed towards the bakery he recommended. But first, I was hungry and wanted to find a place to sit and eat.
“This looks good.”
I found a spot in a small square a bit away from the crowd. As I opened the bag with the skewers, I could see the steam rising, telling me they were freshly made.
“Let’s try this… yum, just as delicious as always.”
The hot meat with just the right amount of saltiness is irresistible. It’s great that you can eat something so tasty so easily from a stall. Maybe I’ll stop by again later. Now, for the other one.
“There you are.”
“Huh?”
As I reached into the bag for the second skewer, someone appeared in front of me. It was Liz, an elf with rosy-red hair and sleepy eyes, small in stature but with a charming, feminine figure
Yes, Liz, the one who had snatched my rice ball yesterday.
“Hello, aren’t the others with you?”
“They’re off today too. Alice went to the guild for a promotion test.”
“I see. Well, I’ll be off then.”
“Wait.”
“Yes?”
I was about to leave when she stopped me. Following her gaze, I noticed she was looking at the skewers.
“That looks tasty. Where did you buy it?”
“Ah, I got it from that stall over there.”
I pointed to the stall where I bought the skewers. It seems Liz really loves her food. Well, it’s true that the stall is great, so I’d recommend it.
“Wait here for a second.”
“Eh, oh, okay.”
For some reason, I ended up waiting. After a short while, she came over with a bag full of skewers and handed one to me.
“Here, this is to say thanks for yesterday.”
“…Thank you.”
I decided to accept it graciously. It would be awkward if she had given me something strange, but a skewer is easy to accept.
“Here we go.”
“…”
As I was about to eat the skewers I bought and the one I received, Liz sat down next to me. She was quite close.
Well, it wasn’t so close that I needed to comment on it, and since we aren’t really friends—practically strangers—I decided not to mention it.
“Delicious.”
Liz ate her skewer with relish. Yep, I knew it would be. That stall really is good.
If you’re in this town, it’s definitely a place I’d recommend visiting. As I ate, I felt a bit proud hearing praise for my favorite stall.
“Thanks for the skewer. I’ll be on my way now.”
“Wait.”
“…”
Yes, I’ve waited for you twice today. What is it? I really want to get to the bakery soon.
“What do you need?”
“Where are you going?”
“Uh? I was about to go to the bakery I heard about at the stall.”
“Can I come with you?”
“Eh?”
Well, it’s fine, but it’s not like it’s anything exciting, and more importantly, if some acquaintances from part of the town see us, it could lead to a whole lot of trouble. Well, the trouble would be mine.
“Is that a problem?”
She asked with a big pleading look, leaning forward.
Hey now, you should probably stop that pose—it’s a bit too revealing.
“It’s fine, but it’s really nothing special.”
“I don’t mind.”
“Alright then.”
So, somehow, my day off ended up with me going to the bakery with a high-ranking party member.
