Chapter 21: Shopping at the Bakery
““…””
Silently, we walk towards the bakery, the quiet between us is almost unbearable. It’s always awkward walking with someone you’re not close with.
“Um, Ms. Liz?”
“Mm, just Liz is fine.”
“No, no, it feels a bit too casual to address someone of a higher rank by their first name.”
“Just Liz is fine.”
“Uh, well, I mean…”
“Just—Liz—is—fine.”
Oh dear, she’s really assertive. I unintentionally slipped into a slightly mature tone, but it’s true, she’s very forward.
“So, um, Liz then.”
“Hmm, what is it?”
“It’s nothing important, but I was just wondering why you thought we should come together.”
“That… Glenn doesn’t need to worry about.”
“Oh, is that so? Wait, did I tell you my name?”
“Mm, no, I heard it yesterday from someone Glenn was shoulder to shoulder with.”
Liz shook her head as she answered. I see, she got it from Spinner.
“And you can talk casually like you did with that person.”
“No, that would be too much.”
“It’s fine.”
“…Sigh, alright, is this okay?”
“Good.”
The loli with huge tits in front of me smirked triumphantly. Why does she look so pleased with herself? I feel oddly defeated.
“Is this the place?”
While we were talking, we arrived at what seemed to be the bakery the old man mentioned. It’s a small bakery and doesn’t seem to attract much attention.
“Wow! I can see why the uncle recommended this place.”
“It looks delicious.”
The inside is small but very clean and well-kept. Plus, the smell of the bread is really nice.
Can you still eat though? You ate so many skewers earlier, and yet you still have room, that’s impressive.
“Hmm, everything looks tasty, it’s hard to choose.”
“Eh? Just buy everything that looks delicious.”
Well, that’s one way to do it. I eat a lot too, but even I can’t eat everything.
And you, you’re buying so much—where does it all go in that small body of yours?
“No, you see, I’m planning to visit other places besides here, and I’m not limiting myself to just two items.”
Right, I’m planning to visit other shops too, so I’m keeping it to about two items here. It’s not like I’m just pretending to be less hungry.
Sure, it kind of bugs me a little—just a little—that I’m being out-eaten by a girl about my age, but that’s because I’m limiting myself here.
…So, I’m definitely not frustrated. I don’t feel like I’ve lost.
“Huh, so where are you going next?”
“I haven’t decided yet. Just planning to wander around town and see if anything looks good.”
“…Hey, can I come along too?”
You’re really keen on following, aren’t you? What are you, a duckling?
“Sure, but if you eat so much here, won’t you be too full for the next place?”
“Don’t worry, I can handle it.”
“…”
Liz makes a smug face with a V-sign. So, she’s pretty confident, huh? And her smug V-sign actually makes a good picture.
“Thank you very much!”
I bought two pieces of bread, and Liz bought about five, and we left the store.
“This looks like a good spot.”
We moved to a nearby place where we could sit down, holding the food we bought from the shop, which included a hot dog and a croissant.
“Alright, let’s start with the hot dog.”
“…”
Why do you girls stare at people’s faces like that? It makes it really awkward to eat.
“Aren’t you eating?”
“…I’ll eat.”
We both munch on our bread. It’s not as awkward as it was at the beginning, so that’s a plus.
“Ah, that was a good meal.”
“Yeah, it was delicious.”
Liz had eaten all five pieces. She really eats a lot.
“Shall we move on to the next place?”
“No, I’m going to take a break before we go. You can go ahead if you want.”
“Okay, I’ll take a break too.”
And so, we both relaxed for a while. I thought about what I might have for dinner tonight.
“…Hey.”
“Hmm?”
“Don’t you think anything when you look at me?”
Huh? What’s with that question, like she wants me to notice some subtle change. How should I answer? Do I just talk about my first impressions?
“…You eat a lot?”
“…Never mind.”
“Ah, okay.”
She turned away. Seriously, that’s a tough question. We’ve only known each other for a couple of days. I don’t know what she expects me to say.
“Should we get going?”
“…Alright.”
It was getting awkward, so I quickly stood up and decided we should keep moving around the town. Liz still seemed a bit upset though.
“Do I… eat that much?”
Liz muttered quietly behind Glenn, but he didn’t hear her.
