A Girl Whose Sense of Distance Is Bugged
Riiiiiiing!
The familiar sound of my phone alarm jolts me awake.
It’s 5:45.
Normally, I’d be up before the alarm, but… it seems I’ve slept pretty deeply this time.
Still feeling sleepy, I decide to close my eyes and roll over for just another 5 minutes. As I do, I feel a soft, like ‘ponyo,’ sensation on the back of my hand.
Barely opening my eyes, I saw Marin-chan, dressed lightly, sleeping beside me, with my hand resting on her chest.
“Mmm…” Marin mumbled as she woke up, feeling my touch on her.
“Ah… sorry,” I said, trying to pull my hand away, but she grabbed it firmly and, in a drowsy voice, said, “It’s okay… I don’t mind…”
“No, yea…it’s fine today.”
“Okay…” she murmurs before drifting back to sleep.
I found myself lulled back into sleep by her, too.
◇
“Wake uuuuup, you’re gonna be late!” Marin-chan tapped my head with a ladle.
“Huh…?” I mumble.
In front of me stood Marin-chan, looking adorable in her uniform with an apron on top.
Glancing at the clock on the wall, I saw it was already past 7 o’clock.
“Oh no! Am I late!?” I panicked.
“Don’t worry, it’s okay! The school is just a train ride away from here!” Marin-chan reassured me.
Ah, right.
I’m not in that house anymore.
And I don’t need to worry about making breakfast or lunch anymore.
I ran my hand over the bed I was sinking into. What a comfortable bed.
I must have slept so well thanks to this soft bed.
“Breakfast is rice, miso soup, fish, and vegetables!”
“Thanks…”
“No problem! Here, morning kiss!” Marin said as she leaned in for a kiss.
I smoothly dodged her and headed towards the living room.
“Tsk, I thought I could do it if you just woke up,” she muttered in a low tone.
It’s a bit scary.
And so, we had breakfast and leisurely got ready.
I couldn’t help but be surprised at how relaxed mornings can be.
I’m used to waking up at 5:45 AM to make breakfast and lunch before going to school, so this newfound morning leisure felt refreshing.
“Here’s your lunchbox!”
“…Sorry, for everything… I guess from tomorrow, I’ll…”
“It’s fine! I’m doing it because I want to!” Marin-chan said with a smile.
At this rate, I really might turn into a useless person.
And so, after some time, we both headed to school.
◇
“Hey, looks like the panda eyes are gone! And you’ve got some life back in those eyes!” Kiyohito commented.
“Yeah, I slept really well last night.”
“Ah, got it. Well, that’s good, but you sound tired despite that.”
“Yeah…”
Even if my mouth were forced open, I couldn’t say it—that I got married to Marin-chan and started living together… Besides, Kiyohito was interested in Marin-chan to begin with.
Then, a little after, Marin-chan entered the classroom.
She looked exactly the same as always.
I can’t help but follow her with my eyes. Does that mean I’m conscious of her too?
“Good morning, everyone!”
“Morning, Mariiiin!”
As I watched this playful interaction of the elite, Kiyohito muttered, “Marin-chan’s still as cute as ever.”
“Yeah…”
Indeed, looking at her again, she’s really cute.
“But is it true? The rumor about her marrying an AV actor?” He blurted out the outrageous rumor.
“What? What’s that rumor about?”
“Well, it’s just a rumor, but apparently Shiozaki-san has a really strong sex drive and she’s been bedding handsome guys from other schools left and right. So, the rumor goes that her husband must be quite skilled in bed.”
Thinking back, she always had rumors swirling around her.
Rumors like she’s not actually rich, or she’s cheating on someone, or she has a terrible personality…
While specific names never surfaced, the rumors always circulated on their own, but only a few actually believed them. Well, the more popular you are, the more haters you get, and baseless rumors tend to spread.
“…Rumors are just rumors.”
“Yeah, you’re right. Hey, it’s rare for you to defend someone! Looks like you’ve fallen for the angel too!”
“It’s not like that. I just hate baseless rumors.”
“Sure, sure. Haha, you’ve never been interested in women, huh?”
“And you’ve only been interested in women.”
“Hey, don’t be so nosy!”
With that one event aside, we were supposed to continue our usual daily life…
◇
“Let’s decide the groups for the school trip!” Our homeroom teacher, Kunioka-sensei, declared crisply.
Oh, right, he mentioned something about that.
Cultural festivals, sports festivals, and school trips were just unpleasant events for an introvert like me.
“Make groups of four, with two boys and two girls! High school students are meant to experience youth! Let’s all fall in love now! Love is great! It gives you vitality in life! I even got a girlfriend recently…” The teacher started his love story.
For me, it was the worst turn of events.
Being forced to pair up with a girl, and having Marin-chan see it, made it the worst possible scenario.
“Naturally, Aoi, you’ll be with me, right?” Kiyohito calls out.
“…Is it okay?”
“What do you mean?”
“You get invited by a lot of people, don’t you? Are you sure it’s okay with just me?”
“Ugh… Your negativity is off the charts today… Did something happen?”
“Nah… nothing.”
“I want to be with you. Alright, hurry up and choose a girl to pair up with. I’ll invite Marin-chan!”
“…Isn’t she married? Is that okay?”
“Idiot, just because she’s married doesn’t mean you should give up on love!”
This guy’s going to get caught up in a real love affair someday.
“Well, I’m off! Farewell!” With that, Kiyohito left triumphantly.
Marin-chan probably won’t agree to team up with Kiyohito.
Oh man… I’m not good at talking to girls… As I’m pondering this, I faintly hear a voice from behind.
“Um… excuse me.”
When I turn around, I see Umi Shichiya standing there.
