Volume 1 Side Story (Part 4) – A Story Completely Unrelated to the Main Story: I Played the Game of Life with Three Sisters
<Translator’s Note: Edited>
“Hey, everyone, come take a look.”
Sakura said as she brought a board game version of The Game of Life into the living room.
It was a scene from a chilly afternoon in early December, past 7 p.m., where we were all huddled against the winter cold.
“While organizing my winter clothes, I found this deep in the closet. It seems like all the accessories, like bills and the roulette, are there. How about we play it together after such a long time?”
“I’m fine with that. It seems like a good match for some drinks. What about you, Aki?”
“I’m good too. Actually, it’s so nostalgic that I want to give it a try.”
“Alright then, Crow, come over here quickly.”
“…Am I playing too?”
I interrupted my dishwashing and asked, to which Sakura responded with an exasperated look.
“Of course! When we say ‘everyone,’ it means the ‘everyone’ in the Hazaki family here. What good is it if you don’t join in as a member of the Hazaki household? …So, have you finally been recognized as a member of the Hazaki family after working as a housekeeper for just under a month?”
“Okay, I’ll come.”
I dried my hands with an apron, and I headed over to the table in front of the TV.
The game was titled ‘Great Reversal! The Game of Life 4’. The fact that it was labeled ‘4’ indicated that it was part of a series. It must be a popular board game.
As I opened the board and distributed the play money, Sakura kindly explained the rules, probably considering that I, as a foreigner, might not be familiar with Japanese board games. Indeed, I had never played the board version of the Game of Life, so I appreciated the explanation.
“Everyone starts with 100,000 yen. You can choose the color of your car freely, but pink pegs represent girls, and blue pegs represent boys. The basic rule is to spin the roulette and move forward, and the events on the squares you land on can make you gain or lose money. There are squares where you can get married along the way; if you land on one of those, Crow, you put the pink peg in the passenger seat next to you. So, in the end, the player who earns the most money wins. Got it?”
“Yes, I understand. Thanks for explaining, Sakura.”
“You’re welcome.”
“So, that means since I’m living overseas, I should put the blue peg on the left side and customize this car into a left-hand drive foreign car, right? Vroom!”
“Well, feel free to do it your way. So, shall we begin?”
I was splendidly ignored. Sakura seemed to be getting the hang of dealing with me, or one could say she was becoming more dismissive.
Anyway, this is how the Game of Life began. With me seated to the left of Sakura, Natsumi sitting across from me, and Aki to my left, we proceeded counter-clockwise from Sakura.
In other words, the order was Sakura, Natsumi, Aki, and me.
*Klack, klack, klack.*
Sakura spun the roulette first and got a “7.”
“What a promising start… Let’s see… ‘While walking down the street, a gust of wind blows a signboard at you. Pay 10,000 yen for medical expenses.’“
“Hahaha! Isn’t that just great? We’re already facing misfortune! What a way to start!”
“Ugh, you’re so noisy… Come on, Natsu-nee, it’s your turn to spin the roulette!”
“Alright, alright. Let me show you what real luck looks like… Here we go!”
Natsumi spun the roulette with enthusiasm and rolled a “5.”
With a beer can in hand, she cheerfully moved her car and landed on a square.
“Let’s see… ‘You were scouted on the street and became a model. Receive 500,000 yen.’“
“Wow, that’s amazing, Natsumi!”
“Oh, thank you, Crow-san.”
“Well, if you take off your glasses and change your hairstyle, you’ll become the prettiest girl here. It’s only natural to be scouted.”
“What…?”
Suddenly, Sakura and Natsumi reacted to my words, giving me intense stares. Dark auras seemed to envelop them.
“Did you mean that in a different way, Crow?”
“Yeah, it sounds like you meant something entirely different with that line…”
“Could it be that Crow thinks that Aki is the cutest?”
“Wait a minute…!”
The two of them immediately launched into a barrage of questions, all with the same implication. I felt the pressure.
“I meant… I meant it in a different way! Stop reacting like I actually impregnated someone in real life! It’s just a game!”
Sakura and Natsumi were still visibly upset, ignoring my attempts to calm them down. Aki, on the other hand, looked at me with pity.
It seemed like they had focused more on the storyline than on the game itself. I wondered if the company that made this board game, Full Piece, had a secret intelligence division.
While trying to calm down the two tyrants, I couldn’t help but notice that my blue peg had disappeared from the board. In its place, there was a blue peg in the passenger seat of Aki’s car.
Since Aki’s fiancée had passed away just before reaching the finish line, it seemed that this was the peg of his new fiancée.
“Hehe.”
Aki looks lovingly at the blue and pink pins that sit next to each other. It looked like he wished for a future like this.
It was as if he wanted to say that.
