Volume 1 Side Story (Part 3) – I was Declared as Sakura’s Boyfriend
<Translator’s Note: Edited>
After enjoying Aki’s performance as the cat maid, I wandered around, and before I knew it, it was already 1:30 p.m. I rushed to the gymnasium and watched “Snow White,” performed by class 2-A, from the back row.
I had been curious about who would play the prince, but it turned out to be a female student dressed as a prince at the beginning. Judging from the deep voice echoing through the gym, it was probably Sakura’s best friend, the one I had been in contact with over the summer. That was a reasonable compromise. This way, they could perform the play smoothly without creating any awkward situations with male actors.
Sakura in her “Sakura-hime” dress appeared on stage. The male students in the audience couldn’t help but exclaim in awe at her different appearance. She must have been a bit embarrassed because her cheeks were slightly flushed. Her occasional stumbles over lines, combined with her costume, only added to her charm.
I wanted to record this on my smartphone, but taking pictures or videos inside the school required submitting a prior filming permission form. Damn, I should have submitted one and bought a handheld camera capable of 4K recording!
The play was a comedic version of the original Snow White story with added humor. Even the kiss scene, where the prince should wake up Snow White, turned into a scene where a seemingly sleeping Snow White woke up and scolded the prince, who played the fool.
It’s good.
Now I don’t have to worry about Sakura kissing anyone.
Wait… Why am I relieved that Sakura won’t be kissing anyone?
This is starting to sound like… I have feelings for Sakura?
No, no, that’s not it.
I shook my head to clear these silly thoughts and joined the applause during the curtain call as the cast took their bows. A few weeks ago, I was feeling down and complaining about everything, but now that I saw Sakura holding hands with her friends and wearing a beautiful smile as she bowed to the audience, I couldn’t help but be captivated by her.
“Your smile was beautiful, Sakura.”
“Wha—!? Um, wh-what!?.”
After the play had ended, I followed the 2-A students out from behind the gymnasium, and just as Sakura found herself alone on the stairs, I approached her from behind and complimented her. I intended to speak to her in a normal way, but it seemed I was startled by her.
“Why are you here, Crow?”
“I was just free, so I came.”
“No, don’t give me a line like, ‘I came here on a whim just like that,’ like the girl who suddenly showed up at your house.”
“Are you saying it was a bad idea for me to come?”
“It was a bad idea!”
“Don’t be so quick to judge… Even I have feelings, you know.”
“Hey, isn’t that the handsome guy from back then!”
A girl suddenly exclaimed as she climbed the stairs to join us.
This girl had short brown hair and a slightly sophisticated appearance, potentially fitting the description of a “gal” stereotype.
“Hi there! Why’s the handsome guy here? Did Sakura invite you?”
“N-No, it’s not like that… I just came here on my own.”
“Nice to meet you. I’m Shoko.”
“Sakura takes care of me all the time. Mostly by telling me one-sided love stories about the handsome guy!”
“Wait, what?”
It seemed like their argument was heating up more than I expected, and a small crowd was gathering around us.
“Fine, if you’re going to deny it that much, then it’s okay for me to date the handsome guy, right?”
“What?!”
“If you won’t admit it, then there shouldn’t be a problem if I make him mine, right? Even if you don’t admit it, Crow isn’t just a housekeeper, right?”
“Wait a minute.”
At this point, their argument had escalated quite a bit, and Shoko suddenly clung to my right arm as if she were trying to show Sakura something. I could feel the softness of her chest against my elbow. She wasn’t as well-endowed as Aki, but there was a definite firmness to her bosom. It made me a little nervous.
Shoko tightened her embrace, ignoring my reaction, almost like she was trying to kiss me, but before she could do anything, Sakura tackled her, sending Shoko flying.
“Ugh!?”
Shoko groaned as she crashed into the hallway wall.
Sakura seemed flustered by her own actions but immediately clung to my right arm again, this time even tighter than before.
“C-Crow is my boyfriend! Nobody can touch him!”
“Well, you said it.”
Sakura had kissed me right before Shoko intervened, and I was still reeling from the shock of it all.
The crowd around us burst into excitement.
“Congratulations!”
“Be happy together!”
“We knew it all along, but it’s still tough!”
“I wish I could be reborn as a handsome guy!”
I looked at Sakura, somewhat bewildered by the situation.
“Um, Sakura, are you okay with this?”
“Am I okay with what?”
“With openly declaring that you have a boyfriend like this.”
“…Well, I don’t mind, but… How about you, Crow?”
“If you’re okay with it, then I’m fine.”
Announcing that she had a boyfriend would definitely discourage other guys from pursuing Sakura, which had been one of the plans we’d discussed earlier. However, there was still something I wanted to confirm.
“Just to make sure, Sakura, this is just a declaration of a fake boyfriend, right? It’s to prevent any misunderstanding about you having a real boyfriend.”
Sakura seemed taken aback by my question, and for a moment, she looked somewhat exasperated or annoyed. Then she let out a sigh and offered a playful smile.
“Who knows? It could be either.”
“Huh?”
“If Crow’s too dense to figure it out, I won’t tell.”
With that, Sakura finally released her embrace of my arm and turned her attention back to Shoko, who was now sitting on the floor. Her expression was more seductive and fitting for a wicked queen offering a poisoned apple than Snow White herself.
