Chapter 24: Liam, Terrified of Meria
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
“Ugh…! Wha-What the heck is this woman…. O-Oi! Liam! Is this woman your acquaintance too?! You know her?!”
Zane-san was struggling to get onto his knees after getting knocked down by Meria-san. He shouted at me, trying to shake off the fear he had of Meria-san.
“Yes. She’s also an S-rank adventurer, just like Lydia-san.”
“Wha-What?!”
Flabbergasted, Zayn-san looked at Meria-san with wide eyes. This prompted Meria-san to speak up.
“If you want to explain who I am to the other adventurers, I guess telling them that I’m the Great Mage would be easier for them to understand.”
“The-The Great Mage?!”
Zayn-san looked even more shocked upon hearing Meria-san’s nickname. However, Meria-san didn’t even care about Zayn-san. She just continued on speaking, ignoring Zayn-san completely.
“And so? I just came out of the inn and I have no idea what’s happening right now, but… I can tell that this guy is Liam-kun’s enemy, right? I mean, the moment he called Liam-kun an idiot, he already became my enemy too.”
“E-Enemy… Ra-Rather than an enemy, it’s more like we’re having a bit of a dispute. It’s not that serious… Bu-But… Anyway, if we keep attacking Zayn-san like this, Zayn-san might die. I think it’s best if we don’t attack him anymore than this. Right now, I’m just trying to stall the time, waiting for Zayn-san to run out of stamina. It shouldn’t be long for Zayn-san to become completely exhausted since he kept coming at me so furiously like that.”
I explained the situation to Meria-san, but she only chuckled softly in return.
“Liam-kun, you’re so kind… To even show mercy to this abominable man… Just from a single glance alone I can tell this man is ugly both on the outside and on the inside. But Liam-kun, I’m not as kind as you. So I’m afraid I’m not going to show him any mercy.”
With a dark expression looming over her face, Meria-san raised her hand toward Zayn-san.
“Wa-Wait! Meria-san!
My loud shout ended up in vain, since Meria-san had gathered her magic power in her hand and unleashed it toward Zayn-san.
What would happen if Zayn-san were to receive an attack from Meria-san when Zayn-san was already battered up like that…? I was thinking of the worst outcome, but I soon realized the magic power released from Meria-san’s hand wasn’t an attack spell.
“…Huh?”
It seemed Zayn-san finally noticed it too. He looked surprised upon seeing not only he wasn’t harmed, but all the damage to his body had completely disappeared too. He looked at his hands and body in disbelief.
“It’s a healing spell. You’re back to normal now, right?”
Meria-san lowered her hand and said so. Zayn-san then stood up, finally having enough energy to stand on his feet.
“Yeah. As expected from the Great Mage…! Ha! But still, I never thought even the Great Mage herself would become my ally. Perhaps, you’ve fallen for my manliness? After all, I’m not like Liam. I am more manly than him! Well, whatever! In any case… The tide has changed, Liam!! From here on out, the Great Mage and I are going to beat you to pulp!”
Zayn-san shouted, looking very proud and confident. He then ran toward me after charging his fist with magic power. He was trying to swing his punch at me again. But then, Meria-san spoke up. She sounded very exasperated.
“How dare you say something so disgusting… Me? Falling for anyone other than Liam-kun? How absolutely revolting. Also, don’t misunderstand. I’ve always been on Liam-kun’s side and I don’t have any intention of changing sides. Haah… I knew it. I shouldn’t have shown any mercy to a guy who wants to hurt Liam-kun.”
At the same time, Meria-san raised her hand toward Zayn-san again. This time, she cast ice magic on Zayn-san. To be precise, toward the ground right beneath Zayn-san.
“Wha-?! Dammit!! My legs!! What’s happening—”
Slither of ice magic crawled up to Zayn-san. He was frozen starting from his feet to his head by the ice magic. However, the freezing spell was immediately removed after that.
“Gah-!!! Ugh… Yo-You…!!”
If Zayn-san had been in the battered state he was in earlier, he would’ve died from that attack. It seemed Meria-san had healed Zayn-san on purpose to avoid killing Zayn-san.
“Alright. Time to heal you again.”
Meria-san said before she cast healing magic on Zayn-san again, returning Zayn-san’s damaged body to normal once more. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that Meria-san only healed Zayn-san enough so that he wouldn’t die. Seeing this, Zayn-san became furious. He yelled at Meria-san with all of his might.
“YO-YOU!!! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU—ARGHHHHHHH!!”
But then, Meria-san unleashed fire magic toward Zayn-san. The scorching heat burned Zayn-san and he let out a screeching scream.
“Not only did he try to harm Liam-kun, but he also insulted Liam-kun… There’s no way I’m going to forgive him just like that. I need to torment him thoroughly first…”
Meria-san muttered. Her eyes looked a bit clouded. She looked like the incarnation of the devil herself. Just like that, she healed Zayn-san again. Then, she unleashed ice magic on him. She removed the magic just before Zayn-san’s whole body ceased to function from the frostbite. Then, she healed Zayn-san again only to burn him with fire magic once more.
Seeing this sight, I felt a chill running down my spine. Meria-san’s action and demeanor terrified me. I was really grateful Meria-san was on my side.
