Chapter 29: The Heroine Arrives Fashionably Late
Today was the deadline for the activity report. The Labyrinth Club had reached a point where the four members except me could beat the Skull Lord Skeleton Lord in the simulator with one hundred percent certainty.
We had properly submitted the exploration notice to the association, and all that was left was to dive into the abyss…
After finishing the final gear check in the clubroom, Morino Shinobu let out a cry that sounded almost like a scream.
“She’s not here? What does that even mean!?”
“Minister, don’t ask me—I have no idea.”
Morino Shinobu pressed Akazawa with a look of pure frustration, but Akazawa just shook his head in confusion. Right then, Ise hurried back into the clubroom, her face pale.
“Morino-san, it’s terrible. Sado-kun got hit by a hit-and-run driver on his way to school and was rushed to the hospital…”
“What!?”
Sado had been taken to Tokyo Metropolitan University Hospital. He had already received emergency treatment, so the whole Labyrinth Club went to visit him.
His life wasn’t in danger, which was a huge relief, but his injuries looked really painful.
His right leg was locked in a cast and bandages and hung from the ceiling by a traction device. His left arm was wrapped in an arm holder and secured by a sling from his shoulder.
When Morino Shinobu asked if he was okay, Sado started crying big tears without caring who saw.
“Minister… I’m so sorry… It’s frustrating! Hinata-san taught me so much and I finally got stronger, but now I have to just sit here and watch the club disappear…”
“It’s okay! We won’t let the Labyrinth Club disappear. Sado-kun, just focus on getting better. Once you’re healed, we’ll go dungeon exploring again.”
Morino Shinobu clenched her fist in front of him and showed she hadn’t given up.
“Ugh… ugh… thank you… Ministerrrrr…”
It happened on the way back to the academy.
“Haaaaaaa…”
After visiting Sado, Morino Shinobu let out a long, heavy sigh as we left the hospital. She hadn’t shown any weakness in front of him, but inside she clearly felt different.
We were about to start planning countermeasures in the clubroom when it happened.
“Minister Morino, the deadline is today. Is it really okay to waste time like this? Or have you already given up?”
As if he had timed it perfectly, Student Council President Ishiki Daigo appeared.
“What a dirty trick!”
The moment Ise saw Ishiki, she snapped at him.
“Huh? What are you talking about? Are you seriously suggesting I planned Sado-kun’s accident? If you say something like that, I’ll happily sue you for defamation.”
That smug smile made me want to punch him.
“I never knew you were this rotten.”
Akazawa dropped to his knees on the floor in despair.
The Labyrinth Club might be forced to close its history, but I felt a little happy. Sado, Akazawa, and Ise—who had each been absent from club activities for their own reasons—were now fired up about labyrinth exploration again.
Ise, still refusing to give up, made a suggestion to Morino Shinobu.
“Minister! If we just need to make up the numbers…”
“No. Even if we could fill the roster, someone without experience might drop out partway or freeze up completely. And above all, I can’t put a kid who doesn’t want to explore in danger.”
Even if he hadn’t done it directly, the chances were high that Ishiki was involved in Sado’s accident. But he wasn’t stupid enough to show his hand right away.
A coward like Ishiki and an honest person like Morino Shinobu were a bad match.
Ishiki seemed intent on watching the end of the Labyrinth Club while grinning with his student council officers.
“You all seem to have plenty of free time. Don’t you have student council work to do?”
“No need to worry. An excellent person like me has already finished all my duties—that’s why I’m here.”
While we were trading sharp words with Ishiki, I noticed someone peeking through the window from outside the clubroom. There was no way a prospective member would show up in this situation. Even if one did, we couldn’t get permission from the association without… wait!?
“Sorry to keep you waiting, Nezha-kun.”
“Eh? Mikado-san!?”
“W-what do you think? Does it suit me? I ended up transferring here…”
Her silver hair created a striking contrast against the jet-black sailor uniform, and the beauty of it stole my eyes. It felt as though a gentle spring breeze carrying a pleasant scent filled the room the moment she stepped inside.
The usually cool and composed Alicia gave a shy little laugh, and my gaze was drawn to her embarrassed expression. When our eyes met, she bashfully looked away and brushed her front hair back.
Alicia in a sailor uniform seemed embarrassed—she kept glancing at me, then looking away, clearly restless.
Morino Shinobu stood up from her chair so forcefully that the chair rolled across the floor.
“No way!? The Mikado Alicia is joining us!?”
I made a request to our savior angel, Alicia-sama.
“Sorry for the sudden ask, but can you come with me starting now?”
“Eh!? Really… I’m happy.”
I had left out the words “dungeon exploration,” but since there was no way a guy like me could date a beautiful girl like Alicia, no one would misunderstand.
She happily accepted my words, yet as expected of the young lady of the Mikado family, her eyes sparkled at the thought of dungeon exploration.
Once it was clear Alicia would join us, I immediately spoke to Morino Shinobu.
“Minister, we don’t have time to relax. Register Mikado-san as a member right away and update the exploration notice with the association.”
“Yeah…”
Morino Shinobu, who had been in a daze, took out her smartphone and accessed the association’s website. But Ishiki and the student council officers surrounded her.
“I won’t let something like that slide!”
“The conditions specified everything except me and the number of people. Changing the exploring members wasn’t part of the rules. Are you planning to add that later?”
I worked with Akazawa and Ise to form a wall and keep the student council from getting close to Morino Shinobu.
“Registration change complete!”
Cheers of “Yes!” leaked from Ise and Akazawa.
“Damn it!? Remember this—if you think you’ll come back from the dungeon safely, you’re dead wrong!”
“That’s surprising. I didn’t think the president cared about us. I thought you were more cold-hearted than that.”
“I’m not worried at all! What an annoying guy! I’m disgusted! Let’s go!”
The student council officers followed after the departing Ishiki like loyal goldfish poop.
It must have been an unexpected miscalculation for them—having someone even stronger than Sado join.
“We don’t have much time left. We dive into the labyrinth now! And we’ll keep the Labyrinth Club alive!”
“““Yeah!”””
As we thrust our fists up in a departure cheer, Alicia looked a little confused but raised her fist too.
“O-oh? Yeah!”
