- Chapter 3- A strange man
Satsuki was working as a rental girlfriend. Something that has become quite popular these days.
An app that allows people to rent a partner to boost their confidence or just enjoy someone’s company.
Satsuki started working as a rental girlfriend when she was in her third year of high school.
I still remember that day when she told me about it.
She rushed to my house like always in the evening to play but this time her focus wasn’t on the game at all.
She appeared happy, a little too happy. Then, she told me something that made my head go blank for a few seconds.
‘I am going to work as a rental partner! Do you know how much they pay…’
I couldn’t hear much of what she said after that.
I had already developed a crush on her by that time so when I heard she was willing to date other guys for money and experience…I lost it and told her not to do it.
However, she frowned at me and said, ‘Who are you to tell me what I can do? Don’t act like my father, Kazuki.’
She stopped talking to me for the next two weeks. In the end, like a sore loser, I had to say sorry and accept the fact that my first love was doing something like becoming a temporary partner of strangers.
She said it was safe, said she needed to just smile and hold their hand at the end of the date and that would be it.
At that time, I was so desperate for her attention…her presence in my life that I never objected to her decision to do this job.
She hid it from her family for obvious reasons, and using me, she covered up her dates, telling her family she was at my place or at the library with me while she dated random guys every single day.
When my mother remained at home, we couldn’t tell the lie that Satsuki was hanging out at my place. So I generally had to stay in the library so her parents wouldn’t find out.
Many times, she got into trouble, given that her dates were usually located near the train stations, so some people saw her.
At one point, her mother caught her with a man in his early thirties.
That day…I had two options. Let Satsuki know what was wrong with her or…Well, I chose the second option like a fucking desperate virgin and saved her somehow.
After that incident Satsuki started to look at me differently…she started to care about me more.
And even on weekends, she started to keep a day off so she could hang out with me.
We often went out…not on dates but still something like that.
I thought we were getting closer, and once I confessed my feelings for her, she would stop working as a rental girlfriend.
But I was wrong…she doesn’t care about my feelings or anything else. She just likes her job and would go to any extent to keep working.
“How do you feel now?” My mom asked as she applied an ice pack to my eye.
Last night, I lost consciousness for a moment.
When I woke up, I was inside a taxi, the address to my house already provided to the driver.
Masato…that bastard hit me hard….
“Is there a mark?” I asked her as I removed the pouch.
She closely inspected my face before shaking her head, “No…but what exactly happened? You don’t generally fight with someone.”
I huffed, “It was nothing…I just stopped a man from stealing someone’s purse and got punched.”
My mom frowned…did she sense I was lying?
Soon, she got up and said, “I will go cook some stew. Ah, and, check your phone. It kept buzzing.”
I nodded before she stepped out of the room.
I lay back down and stared at the ceiling for a few moments.
Whatever happened yesterday came rushing back to me and suddenly, I wasn’t raging like an idiot.
Somehow…I felt both stupid and relieved.
That punch shook me back to reality.
Just then, I felt my phone buzzing.
Picking it from the table, I looked at the number of messages and calls.
78 text messages. 13 calls.
All from a single person.
Satsuki.
I didn’t bother reading them and was about to toss the phone away when suddenly, I got a call from an unknown number.
I frowned…Satsuki couldn’t have asked someone else’s phone to call me. She doesn’t care that much about me.
Without much thought, I picked up the call—well intended to disconnect it the moment I heard Satsuki’s voice. But,
[Is this Kazuki-kun? I got your number Daiki-san. Can we meet now? I am standing outside your house.]
It was an unfamiliar voice.
And someone related to Daiki-san—wait! Did he say he was standing outside my house?
I instantly got up from the bed and approached the window.
Looking down, I found that indeed a man in a grey suit stood there.
What the heck?!
